Box 502, Silverdale, WA AC CJ, BB SC OR October is always a busy month for our club, and this year is no exception as we focus on two very important events for our club elections and harvesting of our dahlia tubers. First, the annual elections will be held at our October 20th general meeting and all members are eligible to run for office. The offices that are open this year are President, Vice President (programs), Treasurer, and one Trustee (this is a three year term). Wanda Novak is this year s Nominating Committee Chairman, and she is contacting members to obtain volunteers for these positions. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the October 20th meeting. Serving in one of these positions is a great way to learn more about dahlias, while providing a very worthwhile service to the club and our dahlia community. We have attached our KCDS By-Laws for member review prior to our elections, and we hope you will consider serving in one of these positions. The other big event for October is the dahlia harvesting from our three club gardens. The dates and times are listed on the left. Dress in warm/waterproof clothing and shoes, and come out and enjoy a day with the club members. As the saying goes, many hands make light work, and that is truly the case with our dahlia harvesting. There is always plenty to do as we cut down, dig, wash, trim and transport the tubers to the grange for the Great Divide on November 5th. Our program this month will take place after elections and will be on how to divide tuber clumps. In addition to a discussion led by Drew, there will be practice clumps of tubers on hand for anyone who would like to learn more on how to divide. Dividing properly is a very important step in getting as many viable tubers as possible to sell in the spring. It s always interesting and we hope to see you there! DUES REMINDER KCDS dues for 2017 are due by October 31st to our Treasurer, Bill Jones. KCDS dues are $10.00 for single membership or $15.00 for a family. ADS & FNWDG membership dues can also be paid at the same time and are due by 31 December. A membership form is included in this newsletter. 1

Provide the completed KCDS reimbursement form, together with receipts, to our Treasurer. KCDS Audit: The board conducted an audit of the treasurer s books in September as required by the KCDS By-laws. There were no issues identified at the audit. The proposed 2017 KCDS Budget was prepared after the audit. ADS Show Report: Drew has sent in our show report to the ADS. KCDS Elections: The 2017 KCDS elections will take place in October and the new officers and board members will take over at the board meeting in November. Wanda is Chairman of the Nominating Committee and Penny will handle the ballots at the meeting as Wanda will not be there. Tuber harvesting dates are set. The Silverdale and National Avenue gardens will be cut on October 22 nd and dug on October 29 th. Pt. Gamble gardens will be dug on October 30th. The tubers will be divided at the Grange on November 5th KCDS Show: Drew has reserved the fairgrounds and reader board for the 2017 KCDS show to be held on August 5-6, Setup for the show will be on August 4, Drew has requested the President s Hall. 2

3 THE GREAT DIVIDE Many hands make light work WHERE: Central Valley Grange, upstairs (where it is lighted, warm and dry) WHEN: November 5th, 9:00 AM SUGGESTED ITEMS TO BRING: Dividing knife, scissors, large cutting loppers, magnifying glass, pruning board, light (flashlight, desk lamp, etc.), towel (or something to put on the table to protect it). Also helpful is a small paint brush or tooth brush to brush away dirt to expose eyes, and a metal mesh/fish filleting glove to protect the non-cutting hand. WHAT TO DO: There are a variety of tasks to do something for everyone! Tasks include: Move tubers from basement to dividing area, divide tubers, inspect and label tubers, move tubers to drying area in basement, remove cutting debris, etc... PROVIDED BY THE CLUB: Scissors, marking pencils, lunch and a good time! If the preceding years are any indication, there will be plenty for all to do. Suggested items to bring for dividing clumps. Not shown are loppers and towels/table top protection. It is a good time with good folks, and these tasks are vitally important for our club s operating funds for next year. 3
