Our guest speaker for e January 19, 2000 luncheon was Brian Carroll, of e Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Mr. Carroll is Special Counsel at e SEC s Philadelphia District Office. His responsibilities include conducting examinations, investigation of potential fraud and providing legal advice on regulatory issues. Previously, Mr. Carroll served as a Senior Trial Counsel at e SEC and procontinued next page Lorraine Fleury is e Chairman of e Chapter Recognition Committee for e remaining year. She has worked as an auditor for e Environmental Protection Agency s Office of Inspector General in Philadelphia for e past 10 years. Before joining e SEC, Mr. Carroll served as an Assistant United States Attorney, U.S. Department of Justice, where he specialized in prosecuting financial fraud. Mr. Carroll served as a Judicial Law Clerk to e Honorable Fredic S. Berman, New York State Supreme Court, and Honorable rd Daniel H. Huyett, 3, United States District Court. Mr. Carroll received his BA from New York University and graduated from Rutgers Law School. He is widely published on legal issues. Mr. Carroll spoke of e SEC s mission of protecting investors and maintain e integrity of e securities markets. To carry out is mission e SEC promotes disclosure of important information, enforces securities laws, and protects investors who interact wi various organizations and individuals. Accord to e SEC, its effectiveness is based in its enforcement auority. Each year e SEC brings civil enforcement actions against organizations and individuals at break e securities laws. Most common among ese infractions are insider trading, accounting fraud, and providing false or misleading information about securities or e companies at issues em. Also, to accomplish its mission e SEC offers e public educational information on its web site at or by calling (800) This web site includes e EDGAR database of disclosure documents at public companies are required to file wi e SEC. The SEC also publishes free brochures and oer educational materials on many investing topics. We ank Mr. Carroll for his interesting and informative presentation. We were happy at he took time out of his busy schedule to speak at our luncheon. Mr. Carroll has passed e CPA examination and expects to be eligible for licensing in March, He is currently an Associate Member of e American association of Attorney-Certified Public Accountants and serves as e Co-Chairperson for its Securities Regulation Committee. 3 Accountants-Philadelphia Chapter - Page 3 President s Message About 50 members attended Brian Carroll s very interesting presentation about e Securities and Exchange Commission s audit function. I would like to ank Brain, who is an active AGA member, for volunteering to share wi us how his agency operates. I encourage any oer member who would like to present e operations of eir government agency or department to give me a call. This mon, Mort Kafrissen from e IRS will be back to discuss current tax issues. The meeting will be held on February 16 at e First Union Building at 5 and Market Streets, Philadelphia, starting at 12:00 Noon. The cost will remain $10 for members and qualifies for 1 CPE credit. Mort always draws a large crowd and space is limited, so be sure to make your reservations early at our web site st On February 21 (Presidents Day) our chapter will sponsor a Philadelphia Phantoms ice hockey game at e First Union Spectrum at 4:05 P.M. Tickets are only $1 each, so why not have a good time wi your family and get to know oer members? Tickets are available on a first-come, first served basis and are limited to five per member. An executive meeting was held on January 19, 2000 wi 8 Executive Committee members in attendance. This year s potential guest speakers, presentation topics, social activities, and professional activities were discussed.
