5 The motion carried Adoption of the Board of Commission July 20, 2017 meeting minutes Motion to adopt by George Matthews 2 nd by Vi Anna Jordan The motion carried Chairperson s report Vice Chair Stephanie Findley, thanked MATC Board Appointee, Kurt Waccholz for his time he d served with the SDC Board. She reported to the group that the meeting would be his last as his term had ended. Commissioner Waccholz thanked everyone for the experience. He stated that he d had an opportunity to learn a lot about SDC s mission. He also said he was looking forward to a continued relationship with SDC and MATC. He expressed his excitement that Dr. Regina Smith, MATC Dean of Pre-College Program would be a great fit and a resource for outreach to those who do not have degrees. Commissioner Stephanie Findley thanked SDC staff for the work done for the SDC 2017 Summit on Poverty. She noted that SDC s brand had been elevated. She gave a special acknowledgement to her co-chair Dr. Gary Williams. She also gave special thanks to Abra Fortson for producing the event noting that it was no small feat. She also shared preliminary data collected from surveys at the summit which were extremely positive. CEO Report SDC CEO George Hinton added thanks to Commissioner Kurt Wachholz for his commitment and advocacy to SDC. He agreed with Vice Chair Findley that the SDC brand has elevated and also thanked SDC staff and event producer Abra Fortson. Mr. Hinton mentioned that he was asked how to effectively lobby and advocate for issues critically affecting people experiencing poverty. He reported that others were being invited to the table to discuss and discover and build opportunities for advocacy. He noted that the State and National CAP Associations were actively researching best practices. He expects to provide insight as it is disseminated. George Hinton also acknowledged the passing of SDC s First CEO. During his tenure he grew SDC into the state of Wisconsin s largest anti-poverty agency. Mr. Hinton noted that a number of SDC Commissioners wanted to explore naming future poverty summits after Mr. Sykes s. Mr. Hinton reported that a group of CEO s for agencies Mr. Sykes had contributed his expertise to were currently gathering and exploring opportunities befitting 2
6 his legacy on the Milwaukee County community. He would keep the board abreast of all new developments. SD Foundation Report Commissioner Vincent Bobot represented the SD Foundation leadership. He reported the following: Board Retreat occurred on September 16 th. 11 New Members Bowling Fundraiser November 5 th at JB s on 41 Appealed to the commission for lane sponsors. SD Properties Report SD Properties Chair, Vincent Bobot reported: Lots of renovations happening Teutonia almost complete signage is coming soon. Still concerned about properties across the street. Financial Report SDC Financial Director, Patrick Kirsenlohr reported on the income statement and balance sheet. All funds are doing well either breaking even or net income. Nutrition Services (food service) increased its net income. The agency is in a good fiscal position. Committee Reports Program Planning & Public Policy Report Vi Anna Jordan suggested that SDC make referrals to the IT training program offered at Employ Milwaukee. Mr. Hinton shared that SDC is at the table w/ Employ and does share training opportunity and other information. A motion was made by Vi Anna Jordan to approve Briefing Papers BP2304 BP2308, Kurt Wachholz 2 nd the motion passed with Jim Sullivan abstained. Career Enhancement Program Boelter Employment Training Initiative o Partnership with Manpower and Boelter o 8 students graduated 3
7 o 5 were employed by Boelter o 3 were employed by Milwaukee Tools thru Manpower Success Story- 1 customer was promoted after the first week of employment to move from the Warehouse to the Offices. Partnership Success- SDC demonstrated to Manpower and Boelter quality training and strong Case Management Support for our Customers. SDC is in conversation to work on the next training opportunity. SDC had a ProStart Graduation on August 30, 2017 o Orientation on September 15 th, 2017 from 12:30pm -3:30pm o Upcoming Training starts on Monday, September 18 Absolute Advantage graduation on September 28 th from 5-6pm o 6-Graduates New Program starting on September 1- Youth Build in partnership with Ezekio Corporation Senior Services Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion are recruiting for Senior Volunteers. Residential Services New staff on board- Ron Klafka is our new Residential Services Manager. Ron has extensive experience in project management, contract management, and customer relations. Over the years he has proven himself to be an asset to the residential services department. Weatherization continues with outreach for customers to apply for the program. The program is planning outreach events to support the Weatherization Awareness Day on October 30 th. Youth Program- SDC is having a Youth Service Back to School Event on Saturday, September 23 rd from 9am -1pm. Counseling and Wellness Clinic- New Role Update Counseling and Wellness Presents The Youth Version of the play "Pieces, In My Own Voice" Date: Saturday, October 11, 2017 from 9am-1:30pm Location: North Division High School 1011 W Center Street 4
