1 Congress Executive Committee SESSION XCII September 7, :00pm Conoco Leadership Wing Conference Room, OMU Call to Order Approval of the Minutes Byron sec Sample Reports o Chair- Aragon: We have an almost full congress, and twenty new associates. We want to make them feel included so we can have attendance. We will be moving things in special orders today. o Vice Chair- Byron: I am excited for orientation. I would like to get committee meetings done at three p.m. that week of orientation. I want you guys to get to know each other and do ice breakers. Does that work for everyone? We will meet at three p.m. We need to make announcements about orientation, can we make the dress code business casual or business professional, because I want to take a picture. We are going to try to get orientation catered. SFC will be on the first floor of the Conoco Wing, that is why we will be on the second and third. As committee chairs you will each have a freshman and you will get a chance to meet them that day. We want to get name tags as well. Aragon: South oval office is on the 17 th of September. Byron: If you have a cover photo please feel free to send that my way and I ll send it out. Aragon: OU votes booth or south oval office booth can count as constituent service so there is an incentive for people to volunteer. Byron: Be thinking of how to get our associates involved so we can work on retention. Aragon: Let s make a separate list for associates and reps so we can cater information specifically to them. Byron: I want them to feel like their time is well spent here. o Secretary- Sandoval: I am excited to see that congress is almost full! o AA- Pae: We had our first informal meeting today. I am excited to see legislation next week. o Con Ad- Naqvi: Interviews went well, there are a lot of cool people and ideas. We went through this pretty quickly. It was a very fast application process that went well despite my concerns. o EA- Rice: We met as a committee today. I had one member out of the two show up, so not bad. We talked about the OU votes initiative. We talked about establishing a liaison with the city council; We also talked about writing some legislation in committee. o P&P- Sample: We met today and saw Bourland s legislation on ASL interest. He wants to do at least 20 hours of tabling so please encourage people to sign up for that. Rep. Nguyen is interested in being a faculty Senate liaison. o PR-

3 THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT CONGRESS CONGRESSIONAL SESSION XCII September xxx, 2014 CONGRESSIONAL ACT NO AS INTRODUCED A congressional resolution encouraging the OU Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics to actively plan for an opportunity that allows for the addition of a Korean language course. It is the purpose of Undergraduate Student Congress to legislate based upon the needs and opinions of students at the University of Oklahoma; and There are currently 17 language courses available at OU (Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Greek, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Kiowa, Latin, Persian, Portuguese, and Russian); and Korean businesses such as Samsung, LG, and Hyundai are looking for bilingual job applicants; and This language is spoken by approximately 78 million people around the world; and Adding Korean as a language course for students to learn is both economically and culturally beneficial; and During the spring of 2014, the Problems and Projects committee surveyed undergraduate students to discover whether there is interest in Korean courses to be added at OU. The questions in this survey, as well as the results from a sample of 181 students who participated, are as follows: Korean Courses at OU: If the OU Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics offered a Korean language course, would you be interested in taking such a class? A) Yes (115 students) 64% B) No (44 students) 24% C) DK/Refuse (22 students) 12%

4 Furthermore, if you are interested, would you be willing to take three semesters or more of Korean? A) Yes (95 students) 52% B) No (52 students) 29% C) DK/Refuse (34 students) 19% Even if you are not interested, do you believe that funding for Korean language courses is justifiable and worthwhile? A) Yes (157 students) 87% B) No (11 students) 6% C) DK/Refuse (13 students) 7% NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT CONGRESS THAT: Section 1: Section 2: Section 3: Section 4: Authors: It urges the OU Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics to actively search for qualified professors to teach Korean. It urges the OU Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics to assess whether some language courses currently offered have low student enrollment, which can determine whether such language courses should be eliminated to make room for new languages. Such a course will give students another choice when considering foreign language requirements for graduation.
