Kildare s, located on Main Street in Newark, is famous for its Guinness promotions and for hosting well -known events, especially during St. Patrick s Day and Homecoming. This past weekend, Friday to Monday, Kildare s hosted its traditional Irish Week. This celebration marked the halfway point to St. Patrick s Day, one of the most famous and most attended events hosted by the pub.

6 The pub was named after Arthur Guinness s county of birth where he brewed his now world famous beer, Guinness. Dave Magrogan, the proprietor of the pub, aims to recreate an Irish heritage and culture in Kildare s. Kildare s has different locations throughout the United States: four in Pennsylvania, one in North Carolina, and one in Ohio. Each location aims to retain the authentic Irish look. According to 26- year-old resident Jordan Bryan, the manager of the Newark restaurant, over 90 percent of the pub is imported from Ireland. This includes ads from Guinness, authentic artifacts imported from Ireland, and Irish furniture. Kildare s staff is dressed in the traditional Irish outfit, the kilt. This tradition varies from place to place, but for the most part, everybody has music and features Irish specials, Bryan says. The different nights featured several events. Friday included bagpipe happy hour with a Guinness promotion. Saturday, the pub presented Irish music from the Fair Trade with Guinness promotion throughout the night. 10 percent of the benefits from Sunday night were sent to Project Children, an Irish organization that sends Irish children to summer vacation in the United States in order to make them escape the political conflicts of their country. Monday night featured an Irish dancer from the Broesler School of Irish Dancing. Shaina Howarth, a waitress at the pub, says that the university s students enjoy Irish Week. We usually get a greater attendance and I think students are looking forward to this event, Howarth says. The manager of Kildare s says that students look forward to bar events and are usually excited by theme parties. Senior Tyler Falkowski says Saint Patrick s Day is the event at Kildare s that he looks forward the most and that he usually enjoys his nights spent at the pub. Kildare s has a screen with a countdown to St. Patrick s Day. Kildare s has usually the best turnout during week days and it is the best option to go to. Falkowski says. Kildare s in Newark is currently going through some changes. The pub will offer a new menu on Tuesday the 18 th of September which will have a larger assortment of choices and a healthier selection. The new menu will still offer the separate section of daily featured traditional Irish entrees that the restaurant is known for.

7 I ve been working here for three years and this is the best menu I have seen! Bryan says. We just want to get everybody excited. Saint Patrick s Day is our most famous event and this is a warm up to it! Bryan said.
