1 The Mansfield City Schools Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m. in the Lowell T. Smith Board of Education Room at the Raemelton Administration building. Superintendent Brian Garverick and Treasurer Robert Kuehnle were present. The pledge of allegiance was recited Mr. Kuehnle called the roll: Roll call: Ms. Cline, present; Mr. Elswick, absent; Mr. Feagin, present, Mrs. Forney, present; Mrs. Weber, present Resolution to Approve the Agenda Ms. Cline moved, Mrs. Weber seconded the motion to approve the agenda Roll call: Ms. Cline, Yes; Mrs. Weber, Yes; Mr. Feagin, Yes; Mrs. Forney, Yes Presentations: Every Student, Every Day Champion Chief academic officer Stephen Rizzo introduced Nancy Niedermier, kindergarten teacher at Springmill STEM Elementary, as the district s Every Student, Every Day Champion for December. Springmill STEM Principal Regina Sackman described Mrs. Niedermier, who previously taught at Newman and Sherman, as an outstanding teacher who engages her students in many ways. Mrs. Niedermier, in turn, introduced kindergartner Kasen Bolden as her Outstanding Tyger for the month. Richland Gives Dr. Holly Christie, director of student support programs, reported that the district received a net amount of $1,114 from Richland Gives, a month-long online opportunity for the public to support nonprofit organizations. This was Mansfield City Schools first year to participate. The funds will support bulletin board tools, school assemblies and student visits to Ohio colleges. Food Service CEP Update Food service manager Lauren Moran reported that the average number of lunches served each day has increased by approximately 150 this year. The district began serving free lunches, regardless of family income, as part of the state s Community Eligibility Provision aimed at high-poverty district. It s going really well, said Moran. The district is serving an average of 2,514 lunches daily. Management of Lead Exposure in Ohio Public Schools Kimberly Stanisio, DNP, outlined a project she is heading to advocate for lead exposure screening among young children. She will work with school nurses at Sherman Elementary School, Reagan Elementary in Ashland and McMullen Elementary in the Loudonville-Perrysville area to inform parents about the project. Stanisio said lowlevel lead exposure can result in learning difficulties. She agreed with Mr. Garverick that exposure to lead paint or its residue in older houses is the primary cause of lead poisoning. Board Member comments: Mrs. Weber reported that Altrusa International in Mansfield has contributed more than 73,000 supplies to Mansfield City Schools this year through its Tools for Schools program. Supplies include folders, notebook paper, Page 1

2 crayons, pencils, glue sticks and a variety of other items. Later in the meeting when the board approved the purchase of seven tickets to Altrusa s annual Spring Bash, Mrs. Weber said all proceeds from the event will be used for Tools for Schools. Mrs. Forney praised the recent Senior High/Mansfield Middle School holiday choir concert, calling it amazing. She urged everyone to attend holiday concerts at their schools. Board Matters for Discussion Woodland Silver PBIS Award Martin Linder, director of school improvement, announced that Woodland Elementary School is one of 30 schools in the state to receive the Silver Award for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports from ODE. Linder said PBIS is designed to build positive relationships with students. Previously, Woodland received the Bronze PBIS Award. Board Matters for Adoption/Approval Resolution to set the date for the 2019 Organizational meeting Mrs. Weber moved, seconded by Ms. Cline to schedule the 2019 Organizational meeting on January 15, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. with Mrs. Judy Forney serving as President Pro Tempore. Superintendent s Report: Mr. Garverick reported that the local group We Act will kick off Spread the Light Week, to recognize firstresponders, on Jan. 6 at 5 p.m. at Graham Auto Mall. Blue light bulbs will be distributed for use in showing support for law enforcement. Mr. Garverick said first-responders, active military and veterans will be admitted free and recognized at the Tygers home basketball game against West Holmes on Jan. 8. Mr. Garverick also said he and other MCS administrators participated in a recent meeting of urban districts at Sandusky. East Cleveland, Maple Heights, Warren City and other urban districts have banded together, he said, to share ideas about how to best serve students impacted by high poverty and other factors that impact learning. Tyger Booster Club donated $1, to the Tyger Baseball Team for 20 new uniform sets. The team has not had new uniform sets for 7 years. The old jerseys and pants will be used by the JV team.
