Approximately 85 past and present AAUW members attended, as well as several leaders from local educational institutions. The theme for the program, One Hundred Years of the Changing Role of Women: Advocacy, Education and Research, was narrated by Columbia branch member Milbre Burch, an internationally known performer and acclaimed writer of modern fairy tales. The script, written by Dr. Jane Biers, Milbre Burch and Dr. Alice Reese, chronicled decade by decade the branch s 100 years of activity in fulfilling the AAUW mission. Models wearing period clothing for each decade further illustrated the changing role of women throughout the branch s existence. Costumes were provided by the Stephens College School of Performing Arts under the direction of Professor Mary Alice (Patti) Doyle. Preceding the narration, the guests, accompanied by Patt Braley, celebrated the centennial with a rousing version of Happy Birthday. Alyse Stoll wrote the lyrics to the tune of Happy Days Are Here Again. AAUW Missouri President Lynne Roney toasted the branch on its many achievements after Southwest Central Regional Director Shirley Breeze extended greetings from the AAUW Association. AAUW President Ruth Nine Past AAUW State Presidents were present, l. to r.: Patt Braley ( ); Alyse Stoll ( ); Jean Shull ( ); Grace Butler ( ); Natalie Tackett ( ); Shirley Breeze ( ); Ardy Pearson ( ); Ella Bettinger ( ); and Betty Cook Rottmann ( ) Sweetser and AAUW Educational Foundation President Barbara O Connor sent a letter in recognition of the branch s 100 years, which Ms. Breeze read at the celebration. In part, the presidents stated: On behalf of the American Association of University Women and the AAUW Educational Foundation, we present the Columbia branch with a certificate of honor in recognition of your 100th anniversary for your exceptional service and demonstrated commitment to education and equity for women and girls. These accomplishments symbolize why we are passionate members of AAUW. But we must not rest on our laurels. We must carry on making every effort to continue our work on behalf of women and girls...because equity is still an issue. Dr. Biers noted that several letters of congratulations were received from branches and individuals who could not attend. Moreover, Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman proclaimed October 13 to be AAUW Day while the Missouri State Senate and Missouri House of Representatives each celebrated the centennial by passing resolutions. Members of the AAUW Columbia Centennial Committee were Grace Butler, chair; Elizabeth (Liz) Bailey; Dr. Jane Biers; Dr. Diane T. Brukardt; Milbre Burch; Dr. Nancy Campbell; Mary Alice (Patti) Doyle; Betty Eyestone; Janet Groat; Dr. Alice Reese; Betty Cook Rottmann and Mary Lou Spradling.

2 New Mission Statement: AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. New Vision Statement: AAUW will be a powerful advocate and visible leader in equity and education through research, philanthropy, and measurable change in critical areas impacting the lives of women and girls. SPRING LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Save the date Saturday, May 3, 2008! Our Spring Leadership Conference will be held at Rickman Center south of Jefferson City. This one day session will focus on Branch leadership. Officers and members are encouraged to attend. Overnight accommodations are available at the Center, or the location is convenient for people to drive in that morning. Registration information will be available in January. Julia Triplett - Vice President for Program 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Have you ever had the sinking realization that your speaker is not going to show up for your branch meeting? Resourceful AAUW members meet this occasional challenge in creative ways. My branch filled in such a gap recently with a vibrant discussion about the structure of AAUW. Members pointed out that branch, state, and regional levels are important for developing leaders, for recognizing our achievements, and for gaining inspiration from national leaders. Nostalgia was expressed for the topics of past years that helped direct our programs, but ideas for the future were put forward to bring our message of equity to new members including new teachers, baby boomers, and early retirees. As one member said, AAUW helps us to connect to the whole picture of being a woman. With the AAUW corporate boards discussing the future of AAUW, now is a great time to do some brainstorming about what you want from AAUW and what you want AAUW to do. Then take the next important step and send that information to the Association. Shirley Breeze, Regional Director, can take your ideas to the board. I would also be happy to pass them along. Two other opportunities to express your voice are available the Every Member Poll in the current Outlook, and the branch survey sent to branch presidents. I encourage you to complete these and return them. Your opinions are important to AAUW and our work in advancing equity. Branch membership vice presidents have received a Membership Tool Kit. I urge you to look through and use the wonderful resources in this kit. Branches have also received public policy information. While presidential campaigning keeps politics in the forefront for months to come, AAUW s public policy resources can help keep us focused on issues. Public forums are an effective tool that many branches use successfully. Don t forget the Woman to Woman Voter Turnout Guide, which leads you step by step. Work is proceeding on the state directory, and we hope to have a copy to each branch soon. Congratulations to Columbia Branch, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in October! If you are like me, at this time of year you have to keep both 2007 and 2008 calendars open on your desk. Grab that 2008 calendar now and highlight May 3, 2008, for the AAUW-MO one-day leadership conference. 3 FROM THE SOUTHWEST CENTRAL REGIONAL DIRECTOR AAUW continues its exciting revitalization as charged by the convention vote in Phoenix. The Board and Association committees are diligently working to implement the wishes of the members regarding restructuring for a leaner organizational structure that will make us as productive in our next 125 years as we have been in the past 125. Work continues on a new way of delivering conventions and meetings, with no firm decisions having been made. Look for more on this shortly. Congratulations are in order to a number of states and branches in the Region who were commended for their attendance records at Phoenix. Kansas and Oklahoma received recognition for increasing their convention attendance by 10 percent or more over Columbia (MO), Edmond (OK), and Northeast Tarrant County (TX) branches were recognized for their increased convention attendance, also. And congratulations also to Pris Mowinkel (TX) on her appointment to the Membership Committee and to Faye Henson on her appointment as chair of the Technology Usability Advisory Group. Check out the newly designed AAUW web site, which was rolled out at Phoenix. You will find a number of new additions and an easier access to the items you most need. While you are on the web site, check out the wonderful materials for Equal Pay Day April 22. There are also very professionally-prepared materials on Public Policy, International Programming, Get Out the Vote, and Affirmative Action. As your branch makes plans for its fall fundraisers and the decisions of how to distribute that money, think of sending a student to NCCWSL or supporting a partial scholarship for a student leader. Help the Association identify students who would benefit from this wonderful experience. Our goal for this event is 500 attendees. New membership, public policy, and programming brochures are available. Be sure to acquire copies for use in your branch. Upcoming dates for your information: December 1, Branch and Individual EF and LAF donations due to state chairs; January 1, 2008, Half-year dues program begins; March, Women s History Month; March 8, International Women s Day. Selection of the new Executive Director is in the final stages; interviews are in progress. Continue to provide us with your thoughts on restructuring and other efforts as AAUW moves forward. You will have another opportunity when the Every Member Poll appears in the November edition of Outlook. Please complete it and get it to the Association. Remember to continue to send me your branch newsletters. Contact me for additional information about any of this material or other questions or comments. Other institutions would do well to examine their policies and follow through in the wake of this case, and we are seeing some initiatives to do so. Colleges and universities must send a message that they value having women faculty, staff, and students and will support their rights under Title IX, under which sexual harassment has been ruled a form of sex discrimination. To quote from Drawing the Line: Sexual Harassment on Campus, the research study published in 2006 by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation: The few sexual harassment cases that are pursued as a legal matter those that reach the front pages of newspapers are simply the tip of the iceberg. Also, Nearly two-thirds of college students experience some type of sexual harassment. Dialogue must be initiated to ensure that college administrators promote a culture of respect and fairness and inform all faculty and students how to contact the Title IX representative. According to the AAUW study, only 55 percent of students are aware that their college has a designated person to contact if someone has experienced sexual harassment. There is much room for improvement in this number. Student-run organizations are an excellent way for women on campus to join together to increase awareness of this issue. AAUW has student affiliate satellites on UMKC and Park University campuses and is forming one at UMSL, which can provide information from the national resources of AAUW.
