2 Presidential notes Fall Issue September, 2014 PRESIDENTS REPORT Penney Hoodenpyle & Joyce Zook, Co-Presidents Dear AAUW of Oregon Members, Page 2 Nearly forty of AAUW of Oregon s members attended the Summer Retreat on July at Willamette University Putnam Center. The sessions, workshops, and networking proved to be a great kick-off for ! We enjoyed meeting members from across the state who have stepped up to lead their branches. In the President s packets distributed at the President/Administrator Counterpart Session, were some key points to get us started on the right path as we progress during this year: Invite us to an event that your branch sponsors this year Include us on your newsletter distribution list jtzook@comcast.net and leehoody@frontier.com Engage in your local college/university activities, especially those who are current partner members of AAUW (contact Arlene Lemieux for CU partner member listing, t.lemieux@comcast.net) Include all of your branch appointed chairs in the online state directory (contact Ann Evensen, evensenann@bendcable.com) Recruit branch members to participate in the Public Policy Lobby Corps (contact Penney Hoodenpyle) Update your branch web site and FACEBOOK page frequently (contact Sarah Elmer for assistance selmer@bendcable.com) A correspondence courtesy request: Respond within two days (unless you are out of town) to s from AAUW of Oregon leaders The AAUW of Oregon Goals for and the President/Administrator s Calendar are available in the online State Directory. We will focus upon one facet of the goals in each of our ON messages. Here is the focus for our Fall ON: Public Policy goals: A minimum of 15% of each branch s membership will participate in the Action network provided by AAUW. The state presidents have a listing of all the members or past members from your branch who have enrolled in Action Alert (Two-minute Activist). We can share this list with you upon your request. We can also provide easy ways to enlist members in your branch (forms to use at your branch meetings or instructions for electronic sign-ups). Contact the state co-presidents. Every branch will participate in a Pay Equity Day activity; April 14 is Pay Equity Day for Plan ahead for a community rally, tabling event, bake sale, or?? Contact Deborah Swerdlow, AAUW Grassroots Advocacy Coordinator, swerdlowd@aauw.org for ideas and supplies. Grass-roots members will participate in the passage of bills relating to Pay Equity and Paid Sick Leave; Student Assistance for Child Care; education; and funding in the 2015 Legislative session. Thank you for attending Summer Retreat and for sharing with those branch members who were unable to attend! Have a great Fall, Penney and Joyce
3 Fall Issue September, 2014 AAUW FUNDS By Claudia Gray OREGON IN TOP TEN NATIONWIDE Again in 2013, Oregon was in the top ten states in the country for several categories of AAUW Funds giving! Oregon ranked 7th for total giving to the Educational Opportunities Fund, 5th for total giving to the Legal Advocacy Fund, 9th for total giving to the Leadership Programs Fund, and 7th for total giving to all programs combined. For per capita giving, Oregon ranked 4th for giving to the Educational Opportunities Fund, 6th for giving to the Legal Advocacy Fund, and 9th for per capita giving to all programs combined. Beaverton Branch ranked 5th in the country for total branch giving to the Educational Opportunities Fund, and 8th for total branch giving to all programs combined. NEW STATE FUNDS CHAIR Jan Heaton of the Albany Branch has agreed to be the new Oregon Funds Chair. Branch and individual donations to the AAUW Funds should now be sent to Jan. She can be reached at and at 2706 SE Columbus; Albany, OR BRANCH FUNDS KIT AAUW Funds kits will be sent to all branches in late August, to both the branch president and the branch Funds chair, if there is one. This kit will include everything a funds chair will need to do her job, including the new Funds policy. The new national Funds Policy #501 is the result of four years of work by the national Fundraising Committee, in line with the latest IRS laws. If your branch does any fundraising at all, this policy is of utmost importance to read and follow! This can be found in the AAUW of Oregon Directory. Help Wanted! Rewarding Opportunity AAUW of Oregon Public Policy Chair Needed Join State Leadership Team Advocate for Women & Girls Serve with Incredible Lobby Corps Keep policy pertinent to all OR members Contact Joyce, jtzook@comcast.net or Penney, leehoody@frontier.com S.T.E.M. By Jane Lancaster, AAUW of Oregon STEM Chair National AAUW and AAUW of Oregon are encouraging all branches to become involved in at least one STEM project in the term. To this end it is suggested that each branch add a STEM Chair to their leadership team. Each STEM chair will be listed on the national site stemchair@listsrv.aauw.org and have access to other STEM Chairs and projects from around the country. Each branch STEM Chair will also receive a quarterly newsletter from National with news and ideas about STEM. It will also list projects that individual branches are doing during the quarter. It is an excellent resource for ideas. I hope every Oregon branch will seriously consider having a STEM Chair and one project this year. If you already have a STEM chair please let me know. mamayoyo@q.com or Please keep me informed about your branch STEM activities. 4 Public Policy & More... Fall Issue September, 2014 Page 4 PUBLIC POLICY There are many exciting changes with AAUW of Oregon's Public Policy Program for ! Our goal is to have 15% of each branch using the Two Minute Activist. Currently every branch has members participating. Twelve branches have Public Policy Chairs. The first training for the new Lobby Corps members is set for September 29th in Salem. The three focus issues for AAUW of Oregon's 2015 Legislative Session will be Pay Equity, Paid Sick Leave, and College Student Child Care Financial Assistance. January 13, 2015 is the League of Women Voters Legislative Day. May 12, 2015 will be AAUW Lobby Day in Salem. AAUW of Oregon needs a State Public Policy Chair. What an opportunity for a rewarding role! The Chair will work with an incredible Lobby Corps, advocate for women and girls on issues critical to our mission, and continue to make our Public Policy program pertinent to all Oregon members. If you are interested, please contact Joyce or Penney. We would be honored to have you as a member of the state leadership group! At Summer Retreat the AAUW of Oregon Board of Directors reviewed the Oregon November ballot measures. The only ballot measure the board endorsed was the Oregon ERA Initiative - Measure 89 (info@voteera.org). Nationally, the AAUW focus for the fall upcoming elections includes GOTV - Get Out the Vote, Voter Registration events, Candidate Forums, and collaboration with other advocacy groups. If you need information or materials for any branch election activity go to: aauwaction.org. All branch presidents should have received the AAUW Leader Essentials packet. It contains materials for all branch officers. Some dates to remember: August 26 - Women's Equality Day, September 3 - AAUW Public Policy call for all branch PP chairs, September 23 - national Voter Registration Day, and November 4 - Election Day. HISTORIAN By Judith Scott, Historian The appeal for materials continues. You may come upon items not knowing if they may be of value for AAUW state records. Please keep them until our annual April convention or July retreat when they can be passed onto me, or if you think they might be ed, to jjpcscott@msn.com. DISTRICT MEETINGS North Central District will be discussing the prospect of a district meeting at their Interbranch Council meeting in September. North w est District will be having a district meeting on October 25th at the Shilo Inn in Seaside.
