There are many women who are changing the world and making a difference in our society! There is a whole list of women who are considered the first woman to...and, they are successful in whatever it is that is their passion. To name a few: Barbara Walters, Aretha Franklin, Mo ne Davis, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Danica Patrick, Janet Yellen, Madeleine Albright, Sheryl Sandberg, Rachel Maddow. As our logo states, BPW Building Powerful Women, our BPW members are also a part of those women who are making a difference in our society. We too can tune into our own passions in life. We will find what motives and inspires us. By doing so, we can knock down any barriers and triumph in our accomplishments! This is exactly what we are doing at the BPW Iowa Annual Conference: Honoring and Celebrating BPW Iowa Achievements and History! 2 Attention: Foundation Trustees & Local Presidents Funding scholarships is a rewarding experience. The end result, seeing a person accomplish a college degree so they may better make a positive difference in the world, is an amazing thing! Our Foundation Fundraiser is on Friday night, April 20, 2018 for live auction of themed baskets. Fundraising continues onto Saturday with a silent auction and 50/50 ticket sales. Here is how you can help: Donate a themed basket to be auctioned off Friday night Donate an item or smaller themed basket for the silent auction Saturday If you cannot come to Des Moines April 20 & 21, take a collection at your local, perhaps have members empty their coin purses at a meeting, and send that money to Treasurer Charla Schmid, th St, Red Oak, IA Or make an individual contribution and/or a local organization donation For those of us coming Friday Night, enter our contest! Understanding Change and Transition Annual Conference April 21 Understanding change in organizations can often be difficult and yet we also know it provides different kinds of opportunities for next steps. Dr. Celina Peerman, organizational behavior specialist, will take us through a series of conversations to help us understand our own individual response to change and how we can continue to be supportive of each other as decisions are made and change happens for the future of BPW Iowa. Join us for an interactive session that will focus on key tools and techniques that we can all benefit from in our personal lives, our professional lives, and our journey with BPW Iowa. Since 1987, the month of March is declared as National Women s History Month, with the purpose of teaching about women s role in history. We need to be aware that the 27th Amendment to the US Constitution (ERA) still needs to be ratified. The amendment states equal rights shall not be denied by states on account of sex, which will be making history in itself upon ratification! How well do you know these Women in History? Cindy Paulsen Women s Issues Foundation Fundraising Event Atlantic BPW had another successful Foundation fundraiser to raise money or scholarships. Two of our past scholarship recipients, now members were present. We also gave $100 to the armory for its remodeling. The Atlantic group is a vibrant part of our community, very visible & active. We honor parliamentary procedures with written agendas for every meeting, keeping track of birthdays and dues renewals each month. We believe these efforts are key to our success in keeping our organization strong and active. Plan now to attend your annual state meeting coming up in April. As your registration chair, I m reporting I have already received 2 registrations in the mail. Please get yours in soon. Let s let everyone know we want to continue to keep BPW Iowa going. We've come a long way, but we're not done yet. If we don't continue, our daughters and other young women will think the rights we have won, have always been there. In a recent Lift Iowa Newsletter, Kate Banasiak, President of Lead Like A Lady, wrote advice about starting a new women s group in Iowa. She believes that it is difficult to find a group that offers the type of networking women are seeking so it may be necessary to form your own group. Certainly, BPW has filled the need for many of us seeking to network, develop leadership skills, etc., but we may be one of Iowa women s best kept secrets. I think we have much to offer, but we have not kept pace with the changing needs of young Iowa women. We need to re-examine our goals and objectives, ensure that we are meeting the needs of our current members while offering value for prospective members, and commit to utilizing digital communications and social media. 5 Proposed Bylaw Changes for 2018 ARTICLE XVI STANDING COMMITTEES Current: Section 1 The Standing Committees of BPW/Iowa shall be Budget and Finance, BPW/USA Foundation, Legislative/Public Policy, Membership, Communication, Leadership, Bylaws and Nominating. Proposed: Section 1 The Standing Committees of BPW/Iowa shall be Budget and Finance, Legislative/Public Policy, Membership, Communication, Bylaws and Nominations. RATIONALE: With Individual Development and Young Careerist programs currently inactive, Leadership committee deleted as a Standing Committee and can be reinstated by the President and/or Executive Committee as a Special Committee status without bylaws change. BPW/USA Foundation is not an active entity of our State organization and its functionality, so may be reinstated as a Special Committee status by the President and/or Executive Committee. ARTICLE XI NOMINATIONS Current: Section 1 The elective Officers of BPW/Iowa shall be nominated by a Nominating Committee. The Committee shall be comprised of a Chair appointed by the President and four (4) members all of which shall be approved by the Executive Committee. Proposed: Section 1 The elective Officers of BPW/Iowa shall be nominated by a Nominating Committee. RATIONALE: Streamlining the process to reflect the organization s struggle with membership # s and low annual meeting attendance which impacts recruiting committee members.. Guidelines are provided in our Procedures and Policies Handbook and ultimately composition of this committee will be determined by the chair in order to carry out their responsibilities. 6 Proposed Bylaw Changes for 2018 (Continued) ARTICLE XI NOMINATIONS Current: Section 2 B) The President shall, as the first order of business at the beginning of the Annual Meeting, present all nominees to the delegate body and the nominees shall be granted time, not to exceed two (2) minutes each to express their views concerning the Federation objectives and issues. RATIONALE: Delete as the first order of business at the beginning of the Annual Meeting as the slate will be previously communicated to membership via communications as required the Bylaws. Introductions with elections are standing order of the Annual Meeting business and agenda. Replace shall with may before be granted time offers flexibility and discretion by the President. 6
