2 Page Pg. 2 2 TARIFFS: NO BIG DEAL Gene Murtha, President When President Trump announced that he was placing trade tariffs on all aluminum and steel imports you would think that he just invented it and ignited a new economic WW III. Well, history supports our President in reacting to unfair trade practices. All you have to do is remember a little event in our American History called the Boston Tea Party. It was started over the British East India Company being allowed to import tea without paying taxes, which put local tea merchants at a distinct disadvantage in pricing, since they had to pay the tax. It started the American Revolution. When it comes to tariffs, they have been with us since Colonial times with every colony levying its own tariffs. Prior to the Federal Income Tax in 1913, tariffs was one of the main sources of revenue of the Federal Government; as it was for many nations. During our history tariffs have risen and fallen, but never have we been without them. It really is a basic tool that is used worldwide by all countries to address any perceived trade imbalance that is not in their best economic interest. Today we have a businessman and power negotiator in the White House who knows what he is doing. As a USA President, when it comes to the economy and business negotiation strategy, his skills are unmatched. He is a hugely successful business man and it shows. It is clear that his recent predecessors didn t have a clue, when it came to the actual negotiations of anything. When you learn more about almost every deal in recent times, it seems like there was no balanced negotiation, but just the USA making concession after concession. Now it has been known for years that China is the worldwide leader in market manipulations, but they have been just ignored and left unchallenged. Perhaps, it is because they hold a huge portion of our national debt, but when you look at the ever increasing balance of trade deficit between the USA and China something had to be done. The deficit reached $375 billion dollars in 2017 and has climbed unabated each year. The showdown has arrived with President Trump leading the charge. When the recent USA tariffs were announced, it didn t take long for the President of China, Xi Jinping, to publicly announce concessions in the financial and automotive sectors. China has a 25% import tariff on all foreign autos being imported. They are now considering cutting it in half. Finally, we have a President standing up to the world and China clearly stating that the USA will only engage in trade that works in both parties interest. We have our President living up to his campaign promise to Make America Great Again. Gene

Putting aside for now the terrible rhetoric we hear on the media every day, is bitter rhetoric really new? Going back in modern history, 24/7 news on television has highlighted the rhetoric on both sides of the political aisle. Back in the 1960 campaign there was much bitterness, because John F. Kennedy was a Roman Catholic. The rhetoric was bitter and most of the time behind the scene. Fortunately, by the time John Kerry ran for President, the issue had evaporated. Then go back to charges that President Dwight D. Eisenhower was dumb and even incoherent. Now, from my first-hand experience with President Eisenhower in 1964, he was anything but dumb or incoherent. With only Richard Nixon and me in the room, after an hour-long meeting with Barry Goldwater, President Eisenhower was in charge and very strong in his positions. Next, look at some of the media s positions with regard to Ronald Reagan s alleged Alzheimer s at the end of his Presidency a charge made by his son, Ron Reagan. Having met with President Reagan in the White House for over an hour in August of 1988, I can tell you he was as sharp as anyone and responded to my questions with clarity and even a little humor. Then, think about those who said 9/11 was an inside job. Can you imagine how sick some people can be? Now, take a look at the price of gasoline. Back in 2007 when prices went over $3.00 a gallon during the Bush Administration, the media was all over Bush for failing to come up with an energy policy. As I have said here before, the Congress and the media are full of rhetoric as prices go up fix the problem. Then, when prices go down, everyone goes to sleep. Finally, I go back to Face-Off, my television show when Larry Levy and I had then Senator Hillary Clinton as our guest. In one of my questions, I asked her about bitter rhetoric in politics. That was early in To her credit, she agreed that the rhetoric had gone too far and even blamed some talk shows where harshness was the approach rather than asking real questions. While I doubt we will see real change down the road, it would be nice to see both sides of the aisle debate real issues and not use bitter hearted talk. It is time for a change even with 24/7 news coverage!

The strength of the nation lies within the individuals who live in the country, and therefore feel that the individual s freedom, dignity, and responsibility must come first and foremost in our government. Free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative are what has brought the country economic prosperity in the past, and what will continue to bring it prosperity today. The government must practice fiscal responsibility, and allow its people to keep the money that they work for. America should work to protect national freedom first, while working to spread peace, freedom, and human rights in the world.

The only network we would see this on would be FOX. All the others are staying away from it. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, this should be of great interest to you! Just One State. From the L.A. Times: 1. 40% of all workers in LA County (10.2 million people) are working for cash; and not paying taxes. This is because they are predominantly illegal immigrants, working without a green card. (Donald Trump was right) 2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens % of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens. 4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers. 5. Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals; they are here illegally. 6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages. 7. The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border. 8. Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal radio stations in LA are Spanish- speaking. 10. In LA County, 5.1 million people speak English; 3.9 million, speak Spanish. (There are 10.2 million people, in LA County. (All 10 of the above facts were published in the Los Angeles Times) Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but 29% are on welfare. Over 70% of the United States ' annual population growth, (and over 90% of California, Florida and New York), results from immigration. Also, 29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens. We are fools for letting this continue. This is only one State...If this doesn't open your eyes nothing will and you wonder why Nancy Pelosi wants them to become voters! President Trump has just pulled off the equivalent of a 6- for-7 batting performance in record job gains for Hispanic Americans, asserts Steve Cortes at Real Clear Politics. The Latino jobless rate has only registered below 5 percent for just seven months in all of US history and six of those months have occurred with Donald Trump in the White House. Best of all: Almost 1 million Americans who had previously given up on finding a job have rejoined the work force since Trump was elected. And this move to greater self sufficiency underscores how identity politics and Democrat s big Government policies have failed minorities. Moreover, Trump s sensible regulatory restraint has allowed small businesses and start-ups to strive, an especially crucial improvement for Hispanics, who are statistically the most entrepreneurial demographic.
