1 C HARLOTTE COUNTY REPUBLICAN CLUB September 2015 Hi Folks, We have two great programs Wednesday evening. These you do not want to miss. Paul Andrews, chairman of the Airport Authority, will give us an update and history lesson of our local airport. They have some great accomplishments and are looking forward to future expansion and growth. What has been the specific impact on our community However, that s has not been done without controversy. Paul should be able to give us the background of the controversy, and the future direction of our airport. Bill Truex, chairman of our county commissioners, has some great information to share with us regarding the future expansion and growth of our county. Again, this is not without controversy. Are the plans to buy IMPAC university building? How does he envision the another city in the county? Should the county have seven commissioners and five elected within their respective district? and lots more. Both programs should be informative, exciting and full of thought provoking ideas as we get ready for next years elections. Let me explain. Today, our nation has a population of over 305 million and there are some 600 million credit cards being used in the United States. Those cards purchase around $25 billion each year with the average card holder having some $16 thousand in debt. And 15 percent of all credit cardholders are regularly late in payments. Credit cards are not the only gap in financial literacy for our population. But, credit cards start early with almost 40 percent of college students having a card. Receiving the cards at 18 or so ends up with those youngsters not having a clue as how to manage their limited resources. There are no lessons in high school and very little taught at home. Based on all my research about this area, I have found no standardized approach in high schools to provide financial training. Unless you become an accounting major, there is also little chance you would get any financial education in college. There is one area where financial education for high school students has

2 Page 2 Page 2 Continued from page 1 taken hold. That is on the Internet. The National Endorsement for Financial Education ( has tremendous resources for producing financial literacy. At the website, you will find a program for high school students and a site to help you set up a money management class. It also covers the details about credit cards and how to protect your personal identity. Another excellent web site is sponsored by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the Federal agency responsible for overseeing the country s banking industry ( It contains a great deal of information which could help young people overcome the lack of financial knowledge. is another place to look for educational material for elementary school through high school. To give you an idea as to how good the site is, take a look at what it does for elementary school students. They are taught the basics of bank accounts, interest rates, and budgets. If you are anxious about young people in your family becoming financially literate, take a few minutes and check out these sites. It will be worth your time and could prove helpful to young people in your own family. 7 Page : A RECORD BREAKING ELECTION YEAR By Charlie Counsil, CCRC 2nd Vice President Be prepared for a long ballot next year. Locally, at the County level terms will be ending for three Commissioners; three members of the Board of Education; three members on the County Airport Authority; the District Clerk of the Court, the County Property Appraiser, the County Tax Collector, County Sherriff and Supervisor of Elections. In Punta Gorda three of the five Council seats will be open. Ken Roberson our District 75 Florida House representative will term out in Tom Rooney, our US Congressman will be up for reelection as well. For the most part the incumbents of these open positions are Republicans and we seek to keep these positions Republican either with the current seat holders or with their replacements. While next year s election is still far off we already see candidates declaring for several open seats.
