51 Know Angola PRESERVATION OF WILD FAUNA AND FLORA Black Sable Project By: Pedro Vaz Pinto The Black Sable Project Project (PCPNG) belong to the Center Studie and Scientific Reearch (CEIC) of the Catholic Univerity of Angola (UCAN) in partnerhip with the Minitry of Environment and the Provincial Government of Malanje. Antelope endemic to Angola, the giant able (Hippotraguniger variani) i a national ymbol that give name to the national football team and figure in the emblem of the national airline, TAAG. It i conidered by many naturalit the mot beautiful of all antelope and currently ha the tatu of Critically endangered (IUCN, 2010). Exit only in two region of Angola, etablihed for that reaon a protected area, the Reerve Integral Luando and Cangandala National Park ituated in Malanje, in central Angola. Pedro Vaz Pinto, coordinator of PCPNG, initiated in 2003 with the aim expedition to find conitent evidence that the animal had urvived the war in Angola. When officially began in the PCPNG CEIC, named themelve the hepherd of able, men of the communitie urrounding the park Cangandala, whoe main contribution wa to indicate key location to mount hidden camera. Dear friend, The third trimeter tend to be the buiet in Cangandala/ Luando and thi one wa no exception. We tarted by making a erie of improvement on the anctuary fence, of which the mot important wa expanding the perimeter, adding 800ha of prime habitat to the anctuary area. The fenced camp cover now approximately hectare, which we believe, hould be good enough for the next 5 year at leat. Alo importantly, the new deign i now more rounded and manageable, and we were able to include one of the bet natural alt lick that ued to be outide the perimeter and ome good grazing area. We alo took the opportunity to build three water hole, two inide and one outide the camp. 3rd Quarter Report Near the central waterhole we placed an elevated tank, to feed water by gravity to the other drinking pot. Before the end of the year, we expect to drill a borehole to upply the elevated tank. In July we had expected to have the chopper and capture team with u, hopefully to dart ome of the non-breeding old cow to give them ome hormonal treatment, and alo to do a urvey and capture/ marking exercie in Luando. Unfortunately, and due to lat minute unexpected bureaucratic contraint in Botwana, the chopper couldn t come and the operation had to be canceled. In any cae we had Pete Morkel with u, and a vet team from the Huambo faculty, and we ued the opportunity to monitor cloely the herd while trying to dart one of the old cow. We did not get cloe enough to the old female, and the bet we could achieve wa to dart and mark the lonely young roan male that i till inide the camp. If thi wa omewhat diappointing, at leat everything ele turned out much better than we had expected. The firt good new wa finding Duarte till alive. He definitely took a eriou knock, but at leat urvived. A reult of the fight with Ivan, he lot an ear tag and now carrie a few car and tab wound. Although finding Duarte wa fantatic, we mut now >>> Fall Winter 2013 > Imbondeiro > 51

52 Know Angola >>> face the fact that he i beaten and hi career a a breeding bull i over. He i limping from the hind leg, lot phyical condition, hi mane look dry and dirty, and the tick are taking over. He allowed u to get really cloe, but he can t keep up the pace with the herd. In September hi condition hadn t improved, and I upect that he won t live through the next eaon. A very intereting obervation, wa noting that he wa now feeding motly on burnt kinzole (Diplorhynchu condylocarpon) leave we ve een healthy animal browing on green kinzole leave, but not on brown burnt leave. It could be a reult of hi teeth wearing off, and therefore looking for le fibrou (but alo le nutritiou) food, but thi i peculative of coure. But if Duarte eem to be finihed, till the bull cenario look to be under control. Not only Ivan i back out of the anctuary and behaving well for the time being (jut patrolling regularly the alt lick in hi territory), but mot importantly Mercury ha, without any doubt, replaced Duarte a the breeding bull. In pite of hi tender age (2 year old), he look impreive and i clearly the man in charge. We aw him everal time courting the female and trying to mount them, even in the preence of old Duarte, who ignored the cene and imply moved away. But a much more important finding wa realizing that our fear of Ivan having kidnapped a few female had been completely unfounded! We were able to oberve and confirm inide the anctuary, the 6 young female brought from Luando in 2011, and the remaining 6 old Cangandala cow (from the initial 9 cow, two have died of old age and one, Joana, ecaped the anctuary in 2009). So baically, the anctuary hold pretty much the whole breeding potential. Outide the camp, only Ivan and Joana are etablihed. The trap camera mounted next to the carca of the old able cow, Neua, who died in early June, produced ome intereting equence. A we upected, and in the abence of large predator, buhpig are the main cavenger, and for everal week a large family of pig would come to the ite almot every night, until there wa little left. The new trap camera have been taking dozen of thouand of photo, with few blank or fale event, making the job of cataloguing the camera record a very time conuming tak, and toring the photo i becoming a nightmare. The uual pecie A lake at Luando reerve. were photographed many time, plu a few unexpected cutomer, uch a mongooe, hare and hornbill. On the other hand, in July and Augut we had a few problem, which included everal upiciou buh fire, one camera being handled by trepaer and one camera got tolen. It wa the firt camera tolen ince we tarted in We have good reaon to believe that poacher were behind thee incident and we are invetigating the matter. With the capture chopper grounded in Botwana, we were able to organize a couple flight over Luando and Cangandala on a military Alloutte. The Angolan Air Force ha alway been an enthuiatic upporter, up to the challenge and hould be an example to other intitution. And after all, the giant able i a national ymbol and well deerve the commitment! We then managed to track down and locate two of the Luando herd, and do a reccie, focuing on enitive area and known poaching hotpot, uch a variou water hole. Poaching i till clearly the bigget threat in Luando, and far from being controlled. What we can attet at thi point i that the larget herd eem for now to be doing well, with about 75% recruitment rate of calve into the herd from 2011 to Or put in other word, we may have had around 25% mortality of calve lat year, which i an acceptable reult, within normal expected rate. Still, the ituation i o delicate, that all it take i a couple poaching incident, and everything goe down the drain, and beyond recovery. Back in Cangandala, in September, we had more good new. Firt by finding another newborn! The mother i one of the young female, and the father may have been Duarte, but requiring confirmation. And then urpriingly or maybe not, Terea once again, i howing clear ign of pregnancy. What a wonderful cow! She will produce her fourth calf in little more than 3 year, in what i a remarkable breeding performance. It will be intereting to determine the father, a it may have been any of the three bull preent. v 52 > Imbondeiro > Fall Winter 2013
