9 W orld Econom ics and Politics No. 2, 2006 Abstracts Un iversa l IR Theor ies Yan Xuetong( 1) Globa liza tion, Soc ia l Change, and Ch inese D iplomacy Pang Zhongy ing( 7) In this paper, instead of merely answering questions, the author puts before us a new issue. He argues that social change is of great importance to study dip lom acy. Globalization has always been accompanied by comp licated social changes. O2 ver the past two decades, the Chinese economy and society have undergone a p rocess of globalization. Globalization has changed state2society and market2society relations, but it has never alleviated the role of the state in m aking foreign poli2 cies and dealing with foreign affairs. The author holds that the theme of Chinese dip lomacy should be to meet the global challenges, including the social changes. Finally, the author elaborates on his view s of how China can formulate system 2 atic p ropositions on global governance, how to p rotect Chinese society against globalization, and what adjustments can be made to China s international moral dip lomacy. Seek ing Ch ina s New Iden tity: The M yth of Ch inese Na tiona lism W ang Y iwe i( 14) Nationalism has been used in clich d and hegemonic discourses of the W est to describe China s national feeling. In this paper, the author first analyzes the ep istemological, political, and globalization origins of the myth of Chinese national2 ism, which are embodied in political nationalism, ethnic nationalism, and cultural nationalism. He argues that to shape a new Chinese national identity through modifying the so2callednew nationalismismerely to continue the myth of Chi2 nese nationalism in the new era. The author then puts forward a new analysis of the frameworks ofof the nation, by the nation, for the nationandnationalization stage 2modernization stage 2 internationalization stage. He points out that the future Chinese national identity should include three aspects: an open and inclusive national sp irit, a harmonious na2 tional character, and a moderate sense of national p ride. A s the largest develop ing country in the world and a rising world power, China has to achieve modernization and internationalization at the same tim e and to unite the motherland, accomp lishing the whole task at one stroke and binding together the trinity of historical traditions, international trends, and world identity. In the course of building a harmonious world of lasting peace and common p rosperity, China is seek2 ing her new identity as a responsible country. Finally, the author concludes that China s peaceful development is sha2 p ing China s new identity and w ill necessarily destroy all kinds of myths about Chinese nationalism. On the In ternet Na tiona lism of Con tem porary Ch ina W ang Jun( 22) Internet nationalism is a new social and political phenomenon accompanied by the rise of the Internet that has aroused great concern. The author analyzes the causes of Chinese Internet nationalism, the composition of the actors, as well as their consciousness and linguistic behavior. Finally, from the perspective of political participation and civil society, the author considers the imp lications for the government and Chinese dip lomacy. 4
