HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING BY C MILYA SMITH The pilgrims arrived in America on the Mayflower in The Wampanoag Indians taught them how to cultivate the land. These Indians were invited to the first Thanksgiving in 1621, a celebration that lasted for three days. Abraham Lincoln was the first president to proclaim a Thanksgiving Day. Every president after Lincoln proclaimed a Thanksgiving Day. In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November. Ever since, Thanksgiving has been celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November. Other countries around the world that celebrate a Thanksgiving include Canada, China, Brazil, Malaysia, India and Korea. Thanksgiving in Canada was first celebrated in 1578 when explorer Martin Frobisher arrived safely from England. Thanksgiving in other countries is a harvest-related festival.

They sliced up the turkeys, added some side dishes, and the result was the first TV dinner. Male turkeys are called toms. Female turkeys are called hens. Only toms gobble. Hens cackle. Benjamin Franklin wanted America s national bird to be a turkey, not a bald eagle. Turkeys spend the night in trees. There are about 5,500 feathers on an adult wild turkey. Turkeys are named for the country Turkey because there is a similar bird in that country. A spooked turkey can run at speeds up to 20 mph and fly between 50-55mph in a matter of seconds. TURKEY JOKES COMIPLED BY BRIAN GUTIERREZ MOTA & JOHNNY SANCHEZ What key won t open any door? (a turkey) Why did the turkey cross the road? (it was the chiken s day off) Why did the turkey sit on a tomahawk? (to hatchet) Why did the police arrest the turkey? (they suspected it of fowl play) What the most musical part of a turkey?
