The Path to Elective Office and Politics for Women CLE 310 More women hold political office today than ever, and yet sufficient representation of women in positions of leadership in all realms of politics has not been achieved. A panel of influential women will look at the opportunities that exist for women in the profession to engage in the political process, and they will explore the ethical issues intertwined with the run for political office. Abbe F. Fletman, Esq., Flaster Greenberg Hon. Catherine Kate Harper, PA House of Representatives Hon. Anne E. Lazarus, Superior Court of Pennsylvania Bridget E. Montgomery, Esq., Eckert, Seamans, Cherin & Mellott, LLC CLE Credit: 0.5 Ethics Hour 10:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Breaking into the Boardroom Leadership and Service on Profit and Not-for-Profit Boards CLE 311 An increase in the percentage of women executives appointed to boards is providing tangible evidence that the glass ceiling in boardrooms can be shattered. Building upon the discussion in the first session, this panel of accomplished attorneys will explore opportunities that encourage women in the profession to close the gender gap that exists in membership on profit and not-for-profit boards. Ethical issues, including liability for action (and inaction), acting in a legal versus non-legal capacity, as well as expectations and responsibilities of sound corporate governance, will be examined. Katayun I. Jaffari, Esq., Ballard Spahr LLP Roberta D. Liebenberg, Esq., Fine Kaplan & Black Judith L. Mondre, Founder & President, Mondre Energy CLE Credit: 0.5 Ethics Hour 12:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. Annual Luncheon Featured Keynote Speaker: Betty Anne Waters Betty Anne Waters served as the inspiration for the motion picture Conviction, starring Oscar winner Hillary Swank. In 1983, Betty Anne s brother was sentenced to life without parole for a murder and robbery he swore he did not commit. When his appeals were shot down and funds for lawyers dwindled, Betty Anne decided to go to college and later, law school to get the credentials necessary to prove her brother s innocence. Betty Anne tells her incredible true story of how persistence and determination fueled by an unbending belief in her brother s innocence lead to his exoneration in Kenneth Waters was convicted in 1982 of the murder of Katharina Brow. Although a police fingerprint analysis had cleared Waters, this information was not shared with prosecutors or defense attorneys. Because Kenneth s blood type (O Negative shared by 48 percent of the population) matched the type found at the crime scene, the evidence seemingly added up. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 1983 for first-degree murder and armed robbery. After Kenneth lost every appeal, Betty Anne began her passionate pursuit to free her brother from prison. In 1999, she contacted the Innocence Project, which was founded by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University to assist prisoners who could be proved innocent through DNA testing. With the Innocence Project s help, the male DNA found at the Katharina Brow crime scene was tested, and it was found not to be Kenneth s DNA, nor was he the perpetrator. Kenneth was exonerated in 2001; sadly, six months after his release, he was killed in a freak accident. Betty Anne lives in New England and continues her work in freeing wrongfully convicted inmates, as well as fighting for the rights of prison inmates. Awards Presentation The Women in the Profession will award the prestigious Anne X. Alpern Award to the Hon. Susan P. Gantman, Superior Court of Pennsylvania, and the Lynette Norton Award to Mary Cushing Doherty, High Swartz LLP, Norristown. 6 Pennsylvania Bar Association 2012 Annual Meeting Lancaster
