1 Richmond (VA) Times Dispatch 06/18/2015 "Key skill for year's top grads: Juggling" Audience: 434,611 Author: Roslyn Ryan Source Website: Key skill for year's top grads: Juggling By Roslyn Ryan / Editor Posted: Thursday, June 18, :48 pm For Goochland's top students of 2015, ensuring success in the classroom often meant finding effective a " and sometimes creative a " ways to balance their school work with countless other responsibilities and commitments. And year after year, from the first class of their freshman year on to their recent graduation day, the four students rose to the occasion. They studied hard a " rarely getting less than an A in anything a " but also found time to volunteer, participate in sports, and hold part-time jobs. Goochland High School valedictorian Meghan Edwards, who finished her high school career with a grade point average of 4.6, said staying busy was actually a big contributor to her success. Edwards juggled a course load jam-packed with advanced placement classes a " and a psychology course at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College that she took through her school's dual enrollment program a " with the demands of playing both volleyball and softball. Paradoxically, she said, "I really found that the times my grades were the lowest were when I wasn't busy." Of course, for Edwards and the other high achievers holding court at the top of their class rankings, "low" grades were the rarest of rarities. While GHS Salutatorian Brittany Woods did have one B on her transcript, her 4.5 grade point average is proof of a high school career spent achieving near perfection. Working hard "is something I've always been used to doing," said Woods, who listed math among her favorite subjects. While his experience at Benedictine, an all-male Catholic military school, was different in a number of ways from his counterparts at GHS, valedictorian Trip Cisik also had to find ways to manage a considerable workload while still having a life outside of school. Early on, Cisik said, he learned to use any free moment he could find during the day a " sometimes even the time in between classes a " to complete his homework assignments. The method allowed him to claim a little time for himself once the school day was over (provided he didn't have either football, basketball or golf), and still maintain the top ranking in is class for every single quarter of his high school career. His final grade point average was Like both Edwards and Woods, Cisik is heading to the University of Virginia next year, an 1

2 experience he is very much looking forward to. "It's really great to be heading off to something new," Cisik said, admitting that he likes to get out of his comfort zone. "I'm really looking forward to feeling that excitement again." For Benedictine salutatorian Winston Frick, dedication to the Cadets' baseball team meant plenty of nights when he was up studying until the wee hours of the morning. After graduating with a 4.3 grade point average, Frick also plans to attend the University of Virginia in the fall. He plans to major in either computer science or computer engineering, not surprising to those who know he used some of his free time last year to build his own computer. To Frick, success in high school came down to working hard and avoiding excuses, both strategies he would recommend to any incoming freshman looking to excel. "Overall, just work hard," Frick said. Whether in sports or in the classroom, "if you put in the work you will see results." 19 Remaining You're entitled to view 20 free articles every 30 days.
