Good luck to all your favorite teams! My trip to Kentucky last month to watch the total eclipse of the sun was well worth the three-hour traffic jam through Nashville, TN on our way home to Montgomery. Photographs and videos of the wispy corona at full totality was a once in a lifetime experience that we will never forget. We have field trips scheduled for both September and October. On Sunday, September 17 th, Jeff Edwards will lead the club on a collecting trip to Summerville, GA in pursuit of the Summerville Agate. This is a fun trip to NW Georgia for those who haven t attended before. The meeting spot is at 7525 US Hwy 27, Summerville, GA. Please contact Jeff with any questions or your RSVP. On October 14 th, Jeff has rescheduled the fossil collection field trip to Point A Dam on the banks of the Conecuh River just outside Andalusia, Alabama. This is a fun trip! You will get wet sitting in the river digging out the creek bank looking for shark s teeth and other fossil in the area. But it is well worth the mess. Once again, please contact Jeff Edwards with any questions. Our December show Gem, Mineral, and Jewelry Show is schedule for December 1-3, It takes every member of our club to put this show on, so please mark those dates in your calendar and sign up on the volunteer sheets to help do your part. We still need extra rocks, minerals, fossils, and specimens for our gift bags at our Wheel of Fortune at the show. We will have more details in our upcoming club meetings. This month, I would like to encourage as many members as possible to bring specimens from their collections to our club meeting on September 19 th. We would like to start a monthly contest on who brought the favorite specimen and then publish it in the next month s newsletter. 2 Page 2 THE GOLDE N NU GGET SEPTEMBER BIRTHSTONE SAPPHIRE Sapphires are said to represent loyalty and trust; purity and wisdom. When worn, the stone can help the wearer focus on intellectual pursuits. It encourages self-discipline, and is said to help one connect to a higher power. It can also protect against snakes!! An extremely hard stone measuring a 9 on the Mohs scale, sapphires are used in electronics, watch crystals, and other scientifc instruments. It is a naturally-occuring gemstone found in many parts of the world, ranging from Australia to South America to Africa to Montana here in the US. But those most prized for their stunning blue color and clarity are found in Myanmar, Kashmir and Sri Lanka. The color of a blue sapphire can range from a pale baby blue to a dark midnight blue; generally, the darker the stone, the higher price it commands. But not all sapphires are blue: they have been found in a range of colors including pink (which is highly prized), orange, yellow, and several shades in between. The Padparadscha stone is an orange-pink variety that is very rare. Stones from the ground are frequently treated with intense heat or irradiation to intensify the color, but those effects can be temporary. Be sure to always source sapphires from reputable sources! There is no such thing as a red sapphire: a red stone with the same chemical composition is actually referred to as a ruby! Taken from this site: MONTGOMERY GEM & MIN ERAL MINUTES The meeting was called to order by president Chris Rutherford. Two guest Kathy Decker and Ladonna Idell were recognized. The Wampols were accepted as new members by a show of hands. Secretary David Sherrod read the minutes for the July meeting which were also approved. Iris McGhee presented the treasurer's report which was then filed. Terry Fetzer gave a show update and said that we where at full capacity with 9 more tables reserved than last year. It was mentioned that members should begin to decide on the volunteer duties and that sign up sheets would be made available at the next meeting. Morning Sherrod has agreed to handle the food and items to be purchased by the club. A field trip to Point A Dam was announced for September 16. (later cancelled due to work on dam). A vote was taken to purchase 50 dollars worth of raffle tickets to support the SFMS scholarship fund.there was no presentation as the scheduled guest cancelled due to in-climate weather. Refreshments were as everyone mingled and examined the items bought for show and tell. After the door prizes were given away the meeting was adjourned. Secretary, David Sherrod 2
