November 2011 Newsletter NOVEMBER MEETING Location: When: Regular Program: NEWS AND MINUTES Juanita Community Club th Ave. NE, Kirkland, WA Friday, November 18, :00 p.m. Our annual charity auction REGULAR MEETING MINUTES: SEPTEMBER 16, 2011 September Meeting held on September 16 7:30 at Juanita Community Club. This meeting was the start of a new season for the rock club, as with tradition we started it with rock club bingo. The youth meeting at 7:00 was to prepare for bingo. This was a potluck and there were lots of goodies for everyone, even chocolate milk. We had lots of new members and everyone had a fun time playing rock club bingo. We had many winners as the night went on and everyone walked away with some fabulous prizes. The trio Anna, Ashley and Gabe did an awesome job at announcing numbers. The meeting adjourned at approximately 9:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Kim Lewis Secretary BOARD MEETING MINUTES: OCTOBER 2, 2011 October Board Meeting held on October 7:30 at Sharon s home. Attending the meeting were Sharon, Evan, Kim & Todd. We started the meeting with a show and tell of a Petrified wood with over ½ an ounce of Gold & over an ounce of Silver in it. Only the second documented as far as I know in the world. Next we went over the schedule for the rest of the year; we finalized the kid/craft project for December. The kid/craft project for December will be to make a Bracelet (which would be great for a Christmas gift for a family member). We discussed the work party that was the previous weekend and the progress. We also tried to come up with ways to get more members to volunteer for the work parties so that the shed will get done faster, before the weather is totally shot. We also discussed when the Kalama field trip will be; we need to check if it is open yet from the fire season. We went over the next upcoming show at Vasa Park on the 22nd & 23rd that we typically help the Bellevue club with. Set up for that show is the 21st which is also the night of our club meeting for October. That does create some possible difficulties with attendance. October will be creating spiders with rocks for the kids meeting and a show and tell of a fabulous personal collection of a club member. The October meeting will also be nominations for board members for the upcoming season 2011/2012. We
talked about which positions are open for nominations and potential candidates. We will need to try to recruit new members to participate more. This is how we see it so far: President: open Vice President open Show Chair (Heather to shadow Norma) Youth Activities Open Secretary Kim Treasurer Robin Trustees Todd, Kevin M., Sharon 2nd VP Open Newsletter/ Website Bruce Field Trip Coordinator Shannon Snack & Food Coordinator Rochelle Birthday Coordinator Stan Raffle Coordinator Open (new position) The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Kim Lewis Secretary REGULAR MEETING MINUTES: OCTOBER 21, 2011 October Meeting held on October 7:30 at Juanita Community Club. The youth program started at 7:00 with the kids making rock spiders for Halloween. This was so much fun that it carried over some into the adult program time, but we all had fun mingling while we waited for the kids to finish their fun. We started the main meeting having the new members introduce themselves. Robin the treasurer talked about dues for the year and sign in sheets. Dues are due in October so many of us paid at this meeting. Stan announced birthdays and birthday bags were handed out. We decided to bump the nominations for board members to the November meeting, since many current board members were absent and time was running over. We had announcements for the upcoming show. The show was at Vasa Park in Lake Sammamish on the 22nd and 23rd of October, and we had two club members in the show selling their wares. The main part of the meeting was a surprise member brought in their personal rock collection. This was Kim Lewis and she had her collection along with pieces of her dad s collection and Todd s collection. It was a great hands on for members to ask questions and get to see some unusual or exceptional pieces that many had not seen before. The collection consisted of everything from carvings to large and small specimens. The meeting ended with the finalization of the raffles and auctions and the winners received their prizes. We also enjoyed snacks at the beginning and at the end of the meeting. The meeting adjourned at approximately 9:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Kim Lewis Secretary BOARD MEETING MINUTES: NOVEMBER 6, 2011 November Board Meeting held on November 7:30 at Sharon s home. The first order of business was confirming that we had the next two meetings figured out. The November meeting is the charity auction for search and rescue, we talked about changing the search and rescue area for the donations, but we decided to keep it in the same area as last year since we hunt at red top a lot and use that county for lots of digs. (Donations are still needed from club members for the charity auction.)
The December meeting is the Christmas party. White elephant game ($10 limit on gift), we decided that we will not have time for the art project that we were going to do, beaded bracelets. The reason why is the number of people in the club, we are thinking that the turn out will be really good and the white elephant game with the stealing and all of the people involved will take a lot longer than usual. This will be lots of fun with so many people involved. The next main topic was the board member nominations. We skipped it at the last meeting and need to hold nominations for the New Year for board members. We talked about having a youth committee, so ideas can me pooled from 3 or 4 people. This is how it is looking so far: 1. President nominations needed 2. VP probably Norma but nominations welcomed 3. 2nd VP probably Sharon but nominations welcomed 4. Show Chair Norma being shadowed by Heather for the following year 5. Chairperson for Show Kim 2nd contact for show 6. Youth Activities Committee & Chairperson nominations needed 7. Secretary probably Kim but nominations welcomed 8. Treasurer probably Robin but nominations welcomed 9. Trustee probably Todd & Kevin and more nominees needed 10. Newsletter & Website Bruce K. 11. Field Trip Coordinator probably Shannon but nominations welcomed 12. Snack food Coordinator probably Rochelle but nominations welcomed 13. Welcome Committee probably Heather but nominations welcomed 14. Raffle/Auction/Door Prize Coordinator nominations needed (new position) We went over bills and what was paid for the shed for the club and upcoming March show info. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM Respectfully submitted, Kim Lewis Secretary MEMBER SUBMISSIONS CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS! Club members are encouraged to send in photos and reports of recent activities and projects for the web site and newsletter! ROCK CLUB SHED WORK PARTY: KIM LEWIS Here are some pictures of the recent Rock Club Shed Work Party. We hauled a lot of dirt, packed it down with feet and shovels and racked it around. We moved huge cement blocks, buckets of rocks, wood and more. Nails were pounded, wood & dirt flew around. Lots of sweat, but we did get a nice food break since this was a potluck. Some even passed around an icepack to cool us off. Lots of great food then back to work. We worked about 9 hours total, including hauling buckets and break time. Enjoy.

HANSEN CREEK TRIP REPORT: SHANNON HEASLETT On November 6th, Shannon led an East KingCo Rock Club field trip up to HANSEN CREEK WA, up by Snoqualmie Pass. We met off of I 90 at the Preston exit Park and Ride. 9 people showed up at this location. Shannon showed some samples of what we were going to be digging and Passed out some hand outs: a copy from the GEM TRAILS of WASHINGTON book on Hansen Creek and a business card for Washington State Discover Pass Recreation Lands. Then it was a car pool up to exit #47 off of I 90 where 5 more people met us. After some more show and tell and hand outs we all drove up the dirt road to the 2,423 foot elevation, parked and geared up for the 1.1 mile walk up the trail to the dig site. We could see the SNOW line in the trees just above us. It was a nice day out and clear skies. The sun was out and shining down on to I 90 and the hill side across from us BUT not on us so it was cold out this day. Shannon went over some rules when we got up there and explained how to dig and whereabouts to dig in this steep hill side. Then everybody posed for a photo opportunity by a big old growth stump. Then it was off to the digging. Shannon picked out about 3 digging locations during the day to put some of the new club members into so they would find some good crystals. And 2 of the holes paid off big time. After a couple hours of digging Shannon rotated some of those members out and into other holes and put different people into the good holes for a couple more hours. So, everybody got to dig for some good crystals in holes that were producing. After about 4 hours of digging we were starting to get cold to the bone. So we headed down the trail to our vehicles where everybody showed off their prize pieces. Shannon, Mary, and Jeff had large sized pieces of individually terminated crystals, and Joel had a nice sized piece with the amethysty purple color in it. I was jealous! A good time had by all
FISH FOSSIL QUARRY DIG IN WYOMING: KIM LEWIS In July, I went to Wyoming with members of the rock club that I belong to. Following are some pictures from one of the many places we went to. This is a Fossil Quarry in Wyoming. Mostly fish fossils are at this site, but others as well. They charge $40.00 an hour per person to dig at this quarry, and it is not so easy. It was a good experience though.
STAR CRINOID FROM WYOMING: BRUCE KELLEY Norma and Kevin gave me this nice fossil specimen of the star crinoids from their summer trip to Wyoming. Here s a close up! The large star is 5 mm across. (See Kim Lewis trip report in the September 2011 newsletter.)
