1 CHAPTER NEWS THE 2015 SILVER CIRCLE AWARDS WILL HONOR SIX DISTINGUISHED PEOPLE Mark A. Baker Teri Forbush Emilio Marrero The Board of Governors of the Suncoast Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences voted to bestow the 2015 Silver Circle Awards to Mark Baker, Teri Forbush, Emilio Marrero, Jackie Nespral, César Núñez and Francisco Cisco Suarez. This is the 27th consecutive year that these awards have been given in South Florida. Mark Baker was hired in 1979 by WPBT Channel 2 in Miami as a studio cameraman for the production of two landmark programs on public television: Que Pasa, USA?, television s first bilingual sitcom, and Nightly Business Report, America s first business news program. Since then, Mark has written, produced and directed numerous cultural, historical, arts and science programs for PBS including New Florida, The Flying Days of Riddle Field, Anatomy of a Hurricane, Miami: Reflections on the River, The Story of Florida s State Parks and Wild Florida to name a few. Mark s programs have earned many awards of distinction for WPBT. Teri Forbush was hired at WPBF in 1988 as a Director. With the exception of 6 years when she was a full-time producer, she continued to direct live newscasts at WPBF since signing on January 1, Currently, she is responsible for producing commercial and sales presentations, as well as editing these projects on Avid. Emilio Marrero did internships at WTVJ and WCIX in In 1988, he was hired by WSCV. Emilio is currently the Director of News Services for Baptist Health South Florida. He is responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight for all content production, including digital, video, social media and healthcare blogs. Prior to 2014, a year which saw him launch Marrero Media Consulting, he was the news director for Univision WLTV-23 in Miami. He also served as the regional news director for Univision s Southeast region, overseeing news operations in Atlanta and Raleigh. Emilio s career at Univision spanned 23 years. He has won three Suncoast Regional Emmy awards and is a six-time Emmy nominee.

2 CHAPTER NEWS THE 2015 SILVER CIRCLE AWARDS WILL HONOR SIX DISTINGUISHED PEOPLE Jackie Nespral César Núñez Francisco Cisco Suarez Jackie Nespral is an Emmy Award-winning journalist who started her career in 1986 on the S.I.N. Network which is now Univision. She became the first Hispanic ever to anchor a network news program when she taped for the NBC s Weekend Today show in She currently anchors NBC6 News at 5pm, 6pm and 11pm. She has extensive experience covering stories such as Elian Gonzalez, the peace accords in El Salvador, the Papal visit to Cuba, presidential debates, hurricanes and the World Series and NBA championships among others. Her work has been recognized with four Emmy awards, an Easter Seal award, an honorable mention from the American Women in Radio and Television to name a few. César Núñez has won five Suncoast Emmy Awards. He is a producer, film director, photojournalist and creative editor. In addition, he is president and CEO of CRNFILMS Multimedia Productions, president of Film Miami Fest, president of Angels Helping Angels (Non-Profit) and former President of the Honduran International Chamber of Commerce in Miami. He began his television and film career in 1987 with Dynamic Cablevision, working on the recognized news pioneer Miavision Channel 13 and Dynamic Headline News CNN. At the same time, he worked as a correspondent for Noticiero Abriendo Brecha for several years. He covered many stories like the arrival of Pope Juan Pablo II to South Florida, Brothers to the Rescue missions, Hurricane Andrew and more. In 1992, Núñez joined the Univision family, WLTV-Channel 23 in Miami. Francisco Cisco Suarez was fourteen when he arrived in America. His first job in television was at WPTV, West Palm Beach, where he was hired at the age of 17. Through his dedication and hard work, he was promoted to a director. In he took a job at WTVJ in Miami as director of the 11PM News. In 1984, he began working at the S.I.N. Network as an Executive Producer, then on to Telemundo in Today, Cisco is Senior Vice President Special Events for the Univision Network. His pet project is the Latin Grammy Awards.

4 The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Suncoast Chapter Scholarships Deadline to submit applicatons: Friday, March 20, NOON THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES SUNCOAST CHAPTER 2015 STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Suncoast Chapter offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors and to college/university students who reside in South Florida. Students must plan to attend or currently attend a four-year college/ university with a declared major in Communications/Broadcasting with a concentration in television in the STATE OF FLORIDA. APPLY ONLINE AT SUNCOASTCHAPTER.ORG DEADLINE: Friday, March 20, NOON Interviews will be conducted on: Thursday, April 2nd, from 10:00AM 3:00PM. The eligibility requirements are as follows: Applicant must reside in South Florida and must plan to attend an accredited college or university in the STATE OF FLORIDA. Be a high school graduating senior or a college student with a declared major in Communications/Broadcasting with a concentration in television. Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Submit an unofficial transcript. Submit a resume along with the application. Submit a one page bio. Submit an essay (250 to 350 words): Who in the TV industry serves as your role model and why? - OR - Considering the variety of media outlets available today, what role does TV play in remaining an important source of news and programming? Submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Please note: The letter should attest to character attributes such as integrity and leadership. Participate in a personal interview with Scholarship Committee members. Be prepared to give the name of the school you will attend and the cost of your tuition. 5 MARCH 2015 CHAPTER NEWS WSVN UNVEILS NEW LOOK WSVN Channel 7 unveiled a new, state of the art set on Sunday evening March 8th. The Newsplex renovation took months to complete and sets the tone for the #1 news station in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale market. We have always been ahead of the curve, said Alice Jacobs, VP of News and Local Programming. As the market leader, viewers expect us to deliver the news in the most compelling and contemporary way. The new newsplex was planned for the future. WSVN has always been known as the station that s innovative said Michael Parente, Creative Services Director. We ve always been known for bigger coverage, a bolder look, and a fast paced high energy newscast, said Parente. We wanted our set to reflect that, so when viewers tune in, you know it s us. The new set includes bolder graphics, bigger display screens and an LED ticker. All of these elements combined make the newscasts visually spectacular. As a station that has built its reputation on solid journalism, breaking news and viewer loyalty, WSVN is excited to bring South Florida viewers this new way to watch 7 News. WSVN s new set premiered with anchors Craig Stevens and Belkys Nerey during 7 NEWS at 10. WSVN, a local FOX affiliate is owned by Sunbeam Television Corporation. The station airs 10 1/2 hours of local news daily. Belkys Nerey and Craig Stevens

6 REGIONAL NEWS FORT MYERS REPORTER TO ANCHOR IN LOUISVILLE By Kevin Eck TVSPY WFTX reporter Julian Glover says he s leaving Fort Myers, Fla. to join WAVE in Louisville, Kentucky as an anchor. After two years in Southwest Florida I will be saying goodbye to Fox 4, Glover wrote on his Facebook page. I ll be moving to Louisville, KY to join the anchor team at WAVE 3 News. It s an amazing opportunity to work at a great station with great people. Glover started his career with WFOR in Miami as an associate producer. By Kevin Eck TVSPY Sam Sweeney will join Sinclair s Washington, D.C. station WJLA. Sweeney is a reporter at WBBH. Before coming to the Fort Myers, Florida NBC affiliate in June 2013, Sweeney worked at WMGM in New Jersey. He started his career at KNXV in Phoenix. He told TVSpy he starts at WJLA as a general assignment reporter April 13. Sam Sweeney TELEMUNDO PUERTO RICO LAUNCHES TELEMUNDO RESPONDE Telemundo Puerto Rico / WKAQ has launched the new Telemundo Responde (Telemundo Responds) consumer investigative unit. Charged with standing up for consumers who have been wronged, the new Telemundo Responde team will be headed by consumer investigative reporter, Zugey Lamela. Launched in 2014 by the Telemundo Station Group and across seven markets in the United States, the Telemundo Responde units have collectively received more than 13,000 tips, produced nearly 700 stories and recovered more than $1 million for consumers in Los Angeles (KVEA), New York (WNJU), Miami-Fort Lauderdale (WSCV), Houston (KTMD), Dallas-Fort Worth (KXTX), San Antonio (KVDA) and the San Francisco Bay Area (KSTS). Consumers who were owed compensation for participating in medical research projects, fell victim to identity theft, got scammed by tax preparers and were owed cell phone rebates are some examples of how the Telemundo Responde teams are standing up for their local communities.
