Pinellas public library staff are also a great resource for recommendations! Participate in National Library Week National Library Week is the perfect opportunity for you to tell your story. How has your Pinellas public library led you to something of value in your life? Look for opportunities to tell your story at your local Pinellas public library during National Library Week. Your stories and support are a valuable part of the success of your Pinellas public library. What is National Library Week? Each week during the month of April school, college, and public libraries across the United States join together to celebrate National Library Week, a week dedicated to celebrating the value libraries, librarians, and library workers bring to their communities marks the 60th anniversary of National Library Week, which first began in In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in The committee s goals were ambitious. They ranged from encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time to improving incomes and health and developing strong and happy family life. In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. With the cooperation of ALA and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme Wake Up and Read! A Hearty Thank You to Library Volunteers This year National Volunteer Week is celebrated April 15th-21st. There are hundreds of library volunteers who graciously give their time and talents in service of Pinellas county libraries. Volunteers work tirelessly in Pinellas public libraries aiding in library book sales, fundraising, planning and funding library programming, and are enthusiastic members of local Boards, Foundations and Friends groups. Volunteers at the PPLC Talking Book Library aid in inspecting and shelving books, outreach activities, and providing service to those who cannot read standard print books. Volunteers also contribute to the PPLC Deaf Literacy Center by assisting in numerous special programs and sign language interpretation. PPLC recognizes and thanks all Pinellas county library volunteers for their generous contributions.
