1 Official Newsletter of Parramatta Computer Pals for Seniors Inc. ABN PO Box 3102, Parramatta NSW 2124 (02) Mobile: Website: Vol 12 No: 1, January 2018 President s message Welcome back to ParraPals in 2018, members. We have many good offerings for you this year. I do hope your time off over Christmas and New Year has been a happy and healthy one catching up with family and friends. A vulnerability has been found in the computer chips that are used by both PCs and Macs. Major software programs have provided updates which protect against hackers using those vulnerabilities so make sure your programs are updated, particularly the PC and Apple Mac operating systems but also programs like Adobe Reader. Thank you to Dawne for organising our great Christmas Party at the Rosehill Bowling Club and to Darrell Hoffman for entertaining us. See some photos over the page. As Pete and I are in Queensland for a couple of weeks visiting family, I am leaving you in the capable hands of vice president Deb Neale who will chair the meeting on Thursday. I have prepared a slide show of our entries submitted to the ASCCA digital photos competition last November.. And keep learning, of course! Deborah dmmartin@bigpond.net This will be a good opportunity to book into courses. So bring your cash with you. ParraChatta Vol 12, No 1 January 2018 Page 1
2 January meeting As always, we will be celebrating ParraPals birthday at our members meeting on Thursday 18 th January. Who can believe it is our 11 th anniversary? Here we show a memory of our third birthday in January Joan Cramer from the Epping Club joins John Moxon, our first president and your editor with the birthday cake. Suggestion 3. Can the squeaky door to the office be fixed please. Committee response: Dawne has applied WD40 to the door to fix the squeak. Christmas Party It was fun, and the Committee may well decide to use this function room again. Pictured below, Deborah expressing our thanks to Dawne Zotz who coordinated the Christmas Party this year. Suggestion box Suggestion 1. Darrell Hoffman offered to share the original music video on which his act at the Christmas Party was based with John Hain, to show at a future Club meeting. Committee response: Offer accepted. Suggestion 2: Dawne suggested we invite Jessica Gauds who was the Apple guest speaker at the ASCCA conference to be a guest speaker at our Club meeting. Committee response: Dawne will invite Jessica to speak at our February meeting. Above, some of our members enjoying the Christmas Party. ParraChatta Vol 12, No 1 January 2018 Page 2

Check it out at urse/view.php?id=82 The course has been based on the latest information about scams from the ACCC's Scamwatch and Little Black Book of Scams. Visit for more information. This website alerts you to the latest scams on its home page. One of the most recent scams is about people pretending to be from the NBN and attempting to seek personal information like bank accounts and credit cards. And of course, all our members with a landline have received telephone calls from IT people suggesting there is a problem with a laptop. You might be savvy, but spread the word to your less computer literate friends. And then there s the supermarket scams promising you are a winner! Don t fall for them. How do we tell the difference between our president and vice president these days. It s easy! Our president Ms Martin is always Deborah. Never Deb or Debbie. Our vice president Ms Neyle prefers Deb.
