1 It s All at Your Library! May 2015 Program Guide PPLC A Monthly Publication of the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative Can I Borrow Your Ukulele? Mahalo! The Pinellas Public Library Cooperative (PPLC) and the Tampa Bay Ukulele Society (TBUS) announce a very exciting partnership, which will be launched on Saturday May 30th at 10:00 am in the Main Branch of the Saint Petersburg Library System. It is widely accepted that the Ukulele originated from the Portuguese instrument called a Braguinha, which was brought to Hawaii in 1879 with a group of sugar cane workers from Portugal. The literal translation of the Hawaiian word Ukulele means jumping f lea in English. It is said that the Portuguese played their instruments so fast; it appeared their fingers were jumping like f leas over the fingerboard! Though the history of the Ukulele spans over 130 years, it s popularity in the Tampa Bay area is fairly recent. Since 2009 the TBUS (800+ members) has been holding Jam Sessions, Open Mic Nights, Workshops, Concerts, and other Events to promote the use of this unique musical instrument. Tom Hood, TBUS Treasurer said of the partnership with PPLC Member Libraries: We are thrilled to be working with the public libraries in Pinellas County to promote the use of Ukulele, and are looking forward to providing fun and educational workshops for users of the kits we have donated to the libraries. We would like to invite any interested people to join the TBUS, and membership is free! Tom s mother was a librarian in Saint Petersburg, and the TBUS project to reach out to the community was inspired by his mother s interest in developing community partnerships through libraries. The 20 Ukulele kits will each contain one Ukulele and tuner, along with a book and DVD. Kits will be available starting mid- May at the following public libraries: Clearwater (all branches), Dunedin, Gulf Beaches, Largo, Oldsmar, Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor, Saint Petersburg System (all branches), and Tarpon Springs. Loaning musical instruments is something library users will see more of in the future, with libraries gearing up to loan a variety of string and percussion instruments. Music and Libraries have gone hand in hand throughout history including the loaning of LP records, 8-track tapes, CD s, and now digitally downloaded songs. Libraries have also been a place where musical programs take place from early learning music to songs during story times and classical concerts on the lawn. Whether it s a New York Times Bestseller, an electronic game, seeds for your garden, a puzzle, or an ukulele you can get it ALL at YOUR Public Library! Your PPLC Library Card will take you there.
