4 This has been a very busy Lions week for me. On Monday I introduced our speaker, Jim Miller at our membership meeting. On Tuesday, members of the Eyes Wide Open Golf Classes Committee joined me for lunch to discuss where we are and where we are going with this event. Wednesday brought the monthly board meeting at G- trust. To complete my week, the Communications Committee is supposed to meet for a meeting at Aldersgate Village. The weather may cancel this meeting. Add one other project to my week s agenda and that will complete my week. That last item is to finish up this week s issue of the Tattler. I keep working on one newsletter while waiting for material for another, so I have, at times, several projects in the mill at the same time. What I am doing is sometimes not all that easy to do. At my age [84] I don t move about as I once did. I am not able to accomplish as much today as I did yesterday. But it is the projects and activities that I am working on is what keeps me going. In my environment, I see so many people with little or nothing to do all day, and it is sad to see them waste away. My message is a simple one. Keep yourself busy. Don t sit back in your recliner and watch TV all day! There is more to life than wasting it away doing nothing. Think about our motto be as active as you can. and 4

5 The Eyes Wide Open Golf Committee met at Aldersgate Village on Members present were Spencer Smith, Barbara Smith, Don Spradling, Gene Wunder and Phil Menninger. The major issue discussed was whether or not to hold a tournament this year. Our previous committee chair has resigned, and thus far he has not been replaced. Lion Gene will be placing the EWO on his agenda for the upcoming board meeting. 5

9 FROM OUR LAST MEETING WITH LION RAY MILLER Lion Phil Menninger gave us an introduction to our speaker today via a lengthy "bio" he distributed to the Lions attending. All present learned two things: 1. Our guest, Jim Miller, (no relation) has had a quite interesting and varied career, and: 2. We could be thankful that Lion Phil didn't use Speaker Miller's time to make a formal introduction using all the background of the speaker. To summarize a bit; Mr. Miller is a native Topekan, served in the Navy, returned to Topeka where he married, sold groceries and shoes, joined the U.S. Post Office Dept, was flooded from his new home in 1951, then decided it was time to become serious about handling mail. When President Nixon converted the U.S. Post Office Dept. to the U.S. Postal Service in 1971, Jim successfully applied for a Postmaster position. Stepping from one Postmaster position to another he eventually ran for and was elected national president of the National Association of Postmasters (NAPUS). This meant moving to Washington, D.C. During his tenure as President of NAPUS he was compelled to file suit against the U.S. Postmaster General for violation of federal law in connection with the violence then occurring in post offices (the "going postal" problems). He subsequently turned down better positions in the Washington area to return to Topeka where he retired with his wife of 63 years and settled into a life of committee work at Aldersgate Village. 9

10 Lion Les Carlson reports that our KTWU Phone Answering Team will be working on Thursday, March 14 th. There is a need for eight [8] Lions to volunteer to assist Lion Les with this project. Volunteers will be needed from 5:45 p.m. Until 10:30 p.m. If you can help, give Lion Les a call Do know of someone who could use a Yellow Dot packet? If so, contact Lion Phil Menninger. He has several packets available at no charge. If you have a need, don t wait to get your packet!?
