The Volunteer Vaquero From the President's Pen Beverly Goodman, President, Museum Volunteers May 2012 Hi, Everybody, Here is a quick update and some announcements. The April Board Meeting is a week late, will be April 25th. The Board will vote for Volunteer of the Year, so if you wish to nominate someone, leave the nomination form at the desk for me before April 25th. Our Annual Meeting will be held Monday evening, May 7, at 6:00 P.M. at the Bunk House Bar and Grill. Don't let the name scare you. There is a nice room set aside for us, and the food is very good. We must know your food preference by May 1, and although you'll pay after your meal, once your preference is turned in, you'll be responsible to pay for the meal. If you need to cancel, call me by Friday, May 4, and you won't have to pay. The Bunk House is 15 miles west on the Happy Jack Road. Also call me if you need a ride. Heyward Schrock will be speaking on a bit of WY history and you won't want to miss it. Volunteer of the Year will be awarded at the Annual Meeting, and election of Board Members will be held. If you wish to nominate someone from the floor, you are welcome to do so. Just have the person's permission first. Annual dues of $12 are due and can be paid at the dinner, or get them to Linda Rogers in care of the Museum Volunteers. Also coming up in May is the Historic Homes Walk. See Carolyn's notice on this and please come to walk with me that day. I'll start at 10:00 and I really don't want to walk by myself.
I'm pleased to announce that Dick Hart will be the Advisor to the Board, starting in April since Mary Wilson was forced to resign because of her injuries and long rehab after her fall last December. Dick has been a Volunteer since 1982 and I can't begin to list the ways he's served since then. I'm grateful to have him continue to serve in this capacity. I hope to see you all on May 7. As Always, Bev This and That from the Editor Reasons to Volunteer 1) Connects you to others 2) Make new friends 3) Increases social skills 4) Good for the mind 5) Increase self confidence 6) Combats depression 7) Stay physically healthy 8) Advance your career 9) Brings fulfillment 10) Valuable job skills 11) Breaks down barriers Note* 56 % of all adults volunteer on average of 3.5 hours per week totaling 20 billion hours with an estimated dollar value of $225 billion.

Wyoming State Museum Historic Trivia Provided by Jim Allison, supervisor of Collections Although the weather warms considerably during May and the winter snows begin to melt and produce runoff, some snows at high altitudes simply do not melt. Instead, snow continues to accumulate each season and its weight compacts it into ice. Over time, layer after layer of ice builds up. If the body of ice becomes large enough, it is called a glacier. An alpine or valley glacier is a large body of ice that flows slowly down a mountainside in a preexisting stream valley from the highlands toward sea level. In contrast, a continental glacier is a system of flowing ice, up to two miles in thickness, that covers large parts of a continent such as Greenland or Antarctica. Both types of glaciers possess tremendous power and significantly alter the landscape upon which they move. Wyoming is home to the largest group of alpine glaciers in the United States outside of Alaska. Which Wyoming mountain range contains the largest accumulation of active alpine Glaciers? (This month s answer will be found on page 12) Can't never could **but** You Can Take Time and Your body Just Move longs to be alive
Join us for the Opening Reception for the Wyoming State costumes. Museum's newest exhibit, "Dressed To The Nines", an exhibit of First Lady Inaugural and Wyoming pageant gowns and costumes. The reception is Thursday April 26th from 5-7pm.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS President: Beverly Goodman Vice President: Emma Fosdick Secretary: Tracy Stefanik-Berg Treasurer: Linda Rogers Vaquero Editor: Carolyn Turbiville Ex Officio: Chris Hanson Advisor: Mary Wilson About the Organization From the inception in 1974, the WY State Museum Volunteers have been instrumental in assisting the art and education programs of the Wyoming State Museum. Their tie to these programming sections of the museum remains strong today. Volunteers at the Wyoming State Museum are an important link between the museum s professional services and the public it serves. In human terms, they represent the museum s mission to the public. 7 Meet a new member of WSMV. Pete Hutchison Pete will be working the information desk and is involved in the Arts and Crafts Show and Sale. Curator's Corner Suite Deal! I wanted to personally thank the volunteers for purchasing the Adobe Creative Suite for the Curator of Education s computer. The computer software package has made the production of brochures, posters and other publications much easier and efficient. It has also allowed me to edit photos and revise many of the scheduling documents we use for our traveling trunks and exhibits. The programs also allow us to make more of our brochures, forms and other documents available online (and for publication in the Vaquero!) This is just another example of how vital the Wyoming State Museum Volunteers are to what we do. Thank you all for giving so generously of your time and resources to us! Chris Hanson Curator of Education
Artifacts of the Month by Jennifer Alexander, Supervisor of Collections About a year ago, a woman named Audrey Schwartz contacted the Wyoming State Museum about a possible donation. Mrs. Schwartz is the daughter-in-law of a former US Senator from Wyoming, Harry H. Schwartz, and she had inherited several Schwartz family heirlooms. After hearing about what she had and taking a look through photographs she sent, the Acquisition Committee decided these artifacts would make a wonderful addition to the collection. The only problem was that the artifacts were now in Page, Arizona. Thanks to the generosity of the donor herself and the Wyoming State Museum Volunteers, we were able to hire a moving company to bring the selected artifacts to Cheyenne. We want to thank the volunteers for the $1,000 they paid to bring this wonderful collection to the State Museum. A few of the donated artifacts are currently on exhibit in the Recent Donations case. Please take a look at them the next time you are in. Unfortunately that case is too small to showcase the entire donated collection. So, I thought I would take this opportunity to share a few more of the artifacts that we recently received. In addition to these, the museum received over 100 artifacts including tables, a music box, a sterling humidor, a friendship quilt made in Laramie in the 1930s, kitchen tools, a set of sterling silver flatware Matching sofa and chair with carved wood frame and pink velvet upholstery. 12 Wyoming State Museum Historic Trivia Answer: The Wind River Range near Pinedale in northwest Wyoming contains the largest accumulation of active alpine glaciers in the state. The more than 50 glaciers in this range comprise the largest group of alpine glaciers in the United States outside of Alaska. Most of the glaciers are tucked under the downwind northeast crest of the Wind River Range where the most snow accumulates in the shadow of the high peaks. Some of the largest glaciers are Gannett, Mammoth, Dinwoody, Sacagawea, Knife Point, Fremont, and Helen. Only a few of the glaciers are more than a mile long. Some researchers believe that the glaciers are disappearing. Photos taken in 1922 show the major glaciers to have been between 50% and 70% larger than their current size. If this rate of melting continues, most will have melted completely away within the next 100 years. The absence of the glaciers, which act as frozen reservoirs, will mean a significant reduction in irrigation water available to Wind River Valley and Big Horn Basin farmers of the future. Scientists are able to estimate the ages of the glaciers in the Wind River Range thanks to huge numbers of grasshoppers trapped in their ice. The oldest carbon-14 date of the grasshoppers on Knife Point glacier is 450 years before present, which suggests there was at least 700 years of ice in the glacier at that time.
