5 Chair Report The purpose of the Morden and District Chamber of Commerce is to foster an environment in which business will prosper. We are successful when our members are engaged, and I can truly say we have a fantastic business community that is connected and involved with each other, and with the Morden Chamber. Some of the highlights of 2017 include: our Business Awards Gala, State of the City, the Home and Life Show, Wrapping Up a Morden Christmas, EmpowHER, Business After Hours, Business Tours, Lunch and Learns and Professional Development. We continue to focus on three key areas: Partnerships, Member Value and Advocacy. We strive to be the voice of business, and to create opportunities where business people can connect, collaborate and get results. One key area the chamber needed to focus on in 2017 was our financial position. It was clearly identified we needed to reduce expenses and increase revenues; the latter requiring time and creativity to accomplish. The board and staff have been working diligently to improve our financial standing and ensure a sustainable future for our Chamber. The results of the efforts have been noticeable and we look forward to what another year will bring to our position. The Chamber is all about partnerships and collaboration. We are thankful for our strong relationship with the City of Morden, Economic Development and MCDC. Thank you to Mayor Ken Wiebe, Council and staff for your support, affirmation and encouragement. The board of directors is in a privileged position where 6 existing board members have committed to renewing their terms. This puts the Chamber in a position to execute our goals well and focus on the new initiatives we have been working on bringing to life. A big thank you goes to our current board for their dedication. I am grateful for your integrity, creativity, determination and friendship. It is such a pleasure to serve with you. And of course, a big thank you to Candace Olafson who is the engine that makes this Chamber run so smoothly! Michelle Sawatzky Chair, Morden & District Chamber of Commerce Morden & District Chamber of Commerce Stephen Street Morden MB R6M 0A mordenchamber.com
6 Member Services Committee Report The member services committee has been adding value to our members with educational events and learning opportunities. In total there were over 700 event attendees in 2017 which demonstrates our members are becoming increasingly engaged. Luncheons & Workshops: Safety 101 for Small Business, Michelle Sawatzky & Ron Funk Crash Course Facebook for Business, Chaley Martens & Candace Olafson Mastermind Group 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, Al Ruttan 2017 Economic Outlook, Pierre Cleroux, BDC A Roadmap to Success for Rural Recruitment, Linda Chammartin, People First Recruitment Small Business Perspective on the 2017 Manitoba Budget, Canadian Federation of Independent Business Mastermind Group Everyone Communicates, Few Connect. Al Ruttan Pembina Valley Entrepreneur Bootcamp, Partnership with Innovate Manitoba Mastermind Group Becoming a Person of Influence, Al Ruttan Live2Lead, Partnership with Al Ruttan Small Business Week Local Business Tours, Decor Cabinet Company, Huron Windows, Deasil Custom Sewing, Pure Anada Employee Wellness Series, Sonia Funk, The Whole Avocado Awards Gala: Business of the Year >7 Employees: Home Hardware, Business of the Year <7 Employees: The Olive Tree, Entrepreneur of the Year: Blayne Wyton, Prairie Barnwood and Non-Profit of the Year: Morden Elks Lodge #478. Advocacy & Leadership Committee Report This committee was developed to build our influence and represent our membership on issues of most concern. We currently have 3 Policy Resolutions that have been approved by the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce and are part of their current Policy Resolution Handbook: Resolving Canada s Skills Crises through Increased Immigration Aligning Skills Development with Labour Market Needs Proposed Planning Act Changes for Cities Outside of Winnipeg Morden & District Chamber of Commerce Stephen Street Morden MB R6M 0A mordenchamber.com
7 Networking & Promotion Committee Report The 7 th annual Home & Life Show and the 4 th Wrapping Up a Morden Christmas are two great examples of bringing business and community together. Two successful Business After Hours events in 2017 brought together close to 100 business leaders for networking and collaboration. The Member Spotlight promotion continues to showcases our members to the entire community. We enjoyed creating Pay it Forward videos for social media that featured businesses promoting other local businesses and paying it forward with their praising testimonials; these videos were viewed well over 3,000 times! The MDCC Community Open is a fun, casual golf tournament that allows our members to connect with each other and members of our community. EmpowHER is a fun, empowering and entertaining evening to celebrate International Women s Day. We were inspired by our guest speaker, Connie Bailey, and her keynote address Turning Roadblocks into Stepping Stones. Farmers Market Committee: Every Thursday about 20 vendors set up for the Farmers Market from June-October. Downtown became a bustling market place where the community gathered to shop for fresh local produce, meats, baked goods and a variety of craft and specialty items. The Farmers Market is a place to meet neighbours and friends, enjoy buskers and take a stroll to check out Morden s downtown.
