Methdlgy f Examinatins These exams are cnducted/ cmpleted in three phases. Preliminary Examinatins These exams are hld n 2nd & 3rd Sunday s in the mnth f May every year. It cnsists f 2 subjects (1) General Studies (2) Optinal Subjects (like Gegraphy, Cmmerce, Public Administratin, Plitical Science, Scilgy, Phychlgy, Mathematics, Statistics etc). The Questin paper cnsists f 150 Questins and ptinal subjects (Any ne mentined abve) paper cnsists f 120 Questins and the duratin fr bth paper is 2 hurs. Main Examinatins Main examinatin is held in the mnth f Octber, Nvember every year. Apprximately 12 t 15 times the number f ttal vacancies qualified fr the main examinatin. The main exam papers are f descriptive type and the Subjects / Papers fr the main Exam are as fllws. 1. General Studies (Paper 1 & 2) 600 Marks 2. Optinal Subject-1 (Paper 1 & 2) 600 Marks 3. Optinal Subject-2 (Paper 1 & 2) 200 Marks 4. Essay Writing Qualifying 5. English, Hindi & Reginal Language Nature Duratin fr each paper is 3 hurs. General Studies The paper f General Studies is based n the prtins cvered fr NCERT level f 11th & 12th class syllabus f subjects like Histry, Ecnmics, Plitical Science, Science & Technlgy and Statistics etc. Besides this, the paper f General Studies cvers all the current tpics. 3 There is an ptin f 5 tpics fr Essay writing frm which, yu have t attempt anyne. The tpics are generally related t Current Issues and Scial Awareness. Optinal Subjects The papers f ptinal subjects are based n the syllabus f graduate level. There are 2 questin papers and each questin paper cnsists f 5 questins f 60 marks each. The answers are f descriptive type and s are very lengthy, therefre writing speed and Answer Writing Skills has t be imprved drastically. Interviews & Persnality Test Tw t three times f the ttal vacancies students are shrt listed amngst thse have passed the main examinatins fr the Interviews & Persnality Test. Interview f the candidate is nt nly a test f general knwledge; it is t test the Persnality, cnfidence, decisin making ability, Mral Values and the Visin. It is based n the candidate s Bi-data already submitted. The final selectin is dne n the basis f the cmbinatin f the marks f Main Exams and the results f the Interview. Observatin It is bserved that the percentage f success is abve 70% is Arts subjects. Even if, the candidates have cme frm the backgrund f Science, Engineering, Medical, MBA. Almst all the candidates take the supprt f Caching Classes fr preparatins. It is bserved that if the student has chsen the same subject as that f his Graduatin then the Caching Classes are nt f much imprtance t him. Hwever if they have chsen a different subject, then caching classes are becme mre beneficial. It is als bserved that pting fr caching classes fr General Studies wuld save lst f time fr any backgrund f the subjects. Even if the result f 10th, 12th r even at Graduatin level is nt satisfactry, the candidate shuld nt get disheartened and lse cnfidence. If yu put yur effrts in the right directin and study with ttal dedicatin and perseverance fr at least tw years, yu culd succeed in Civil Service Examinatins. Imprtant Nte The Pattern f Examinatins cnducted by UPSC and State PSC is the same. Althugh everyne aspires t be an IAS, Which is the highest rank amngst examinatins cnducted by UPSC, but the practical reality is that nly 0.002% f the students appearing are selected fr IAS. This is because there are nly abut 50 vacancies fr IAS fficers which are is very lw.
