1 AFMC Infrmatics Resurce Grup Annual Reprt Backgrund The AFMC Infrmatics Resurce Grup (r IRG) brings tgether educatinal technlgists, instructinal designers, medical infrmatics and IT prfessinals frm the 17 schls that make up the AFMC. The IRG has a number f functins: T act as a frum fr discussin and exchange f ideas and practices f interest and relevance t members T act as a clearing huse fr cllabrative prjects and ther activities T act in an advisry capacity t the AFMC Bard n Infrmatics matters The current chair, Dave Lamprn, frm the, British Clumbia, tk up the psitin in 2011 frm Dr. Rachel Ellaway frm the Nrthern Ontari Schl f. Dave will step dwn at the end f his three-year term in January 2014, allwing fr the appintment f a new chair fr A nminatin (and pssible electin) prcess fr appinting the next chair will be discussed at the IRG business meetings and with a recmmendatin passed t the AFMC Bard fr ratificatin. Activities A number f activities have taken place supprting discurse and sharing f ideas between members: CCME 2011: The IRG related events have traditinally ccurred n the Saturday/Sunday f the annual CCME/AFMC meeting. At CCME 2012, the activities were mdified slightly frm previus years (a cnference planning wrking grup was stuck, cnsisting f members frm varius AFMC schls, t assist with the event planning): Un-cnference (Saturday mrning): Saturday mrning IRG was given ver t an un-cnference (click here fr mre n the frmat) sessin where tpics and discussins f interest are drawn frm the participants and imprmptu sessins held arund these tpics. Tpics included simulatin, nline scial netwrking, service mdels, e-learning, electrnic health and medical recrds, mbile data and tls, scial accuntability and interperability, virtual patients, licensing and liability, sustainability, prject planning and pdcasting. This hlistic infrmaticsriented apprach allwed a very hetergeneus grup t fluidly and quickly explre areas f cmmn interest and ptins fr cllabratin. This sessin was facilitated by Deb Tieszer (UWO). This year it was decided (based n feedback received frm a survey f the IRG cmmunity) t create tw cncurrent streams t align with areas f interest amng IRG enthusiasts (Saturday Afternn) : IRG Educatin Stream: This sessin was fcused n hw technlgy can assist in realizing pedaggical need. The sessin was split int tw activities: Virtual Patient Dems and Slving a Pesky Prblem (identifying cmmn areas f challenge amngst schls and crwdsuring ideas t address thse challenges - i.e. Mbility, Learning Analytics). This sessin was facilitated by Marcus Law (Trnt) and Janet Twrek (Calgary) IRG Infrmatin Technlgy Stream: This sessin, rganized by Judy Hunter (Calgary) and Wes Rbertsn (Trnt) included a presentatin page 1 f 3

2 by Stephen Abraham, CIO f the Medical Cuncil f Canada, n the MCC Prf f Graduatin Prject; by Wes Rbertsn, Directr f IT, Trnt, n an analysis f the AAMC IT Survey; and a panel discussin entitled A ft in bth wrlds!!! Enabling IT Integratin between Academic Health Institutins & Health Authrities, facilitated by Yuen Ip, Chief Infrmatin Officer, & Dentistry, Alberta. The panel discussin included the fllwing presentatins: Day in the life f a Learner (Dr. Kaif Pardhan, Resident, Trnt) Day in the life f a Clinician/Educatr (Dr. Cathy MacLean, Family Department Head, Calgary) Infrmatin Sharing Perspective (Dr. Chad Saunders, University f Calgary) Security Perspective (Nicle Schultz, IT Security Officer, Calgary) Business meeting (Sunday mrning): This year, in an effrt t raise the value f the tpics discussed at the business meeting, schls were encuraged t send nly the fficially appinted vting members as nminated by each individual schl dean (minutes and utcmes wuld cntinue t be shared penly t any/all interested). 12 f 17 schls were represented at the business meeting. Several business items were discussed including the nminatin f a new chair (2014) as well as recgnizing the very imprtant rle f the IRG Secretary. Reflectin n IRG s value as a resurce dminated the discussin. The grup felt that it needed t better psitin itself in prviding advice t the AFMC n technlgy matters that were universally pertinent t medical educatin. The members unanimusly felt that technlgy gvernance and strategy were tp pririty fr their schls. The members vted n creating a wrking grup with the task f crafting a briefing nte n technlgy gvernance with intent n submitting t the AFMC Bard f Directrs in. The members als discussed the prspect f hlding business meetings ff line frm CCME in rder t preserve the cnference time fr activities with the mst generalizable value. Panel Sympsium (Sunday afternn): In partnership with the Canadian Federatin f Medical Students (CFMS) and the AFMC Library Resurce Grup (LGR) the Sunday afternn was dedicated t a panel sympsium. This was the secnd such event put n by the IRG fllwing a successful experiment at the 2011 editin f CCME. The tpic f the sympsium was Death f the Lecture: Medical Educatin in the Age f Mbility. The panel presentatin included viewpints frm faculty members (Calgary), a librarian (Calgary), a technlgist (Calgary) and an undergraduate MD student (UBC). The sessin drew a large audience (~130 participants). The sympsium prduced rich discussin n tpics that were cmmn t all participating institutins. Audience members were als invited t ask ad-hc questins. Anecdtal feedback n the value f this sessin was verwhelmingly psitive. A similar panel sympsium, again in partnership with CFMS, is planned fr Gvernance Briefing Nte: the IRG vting members had unanimusly vted t fcus attentin n a single prject fr which had the mst generalizable value t the member schls. Given the new LCME accreditatin standards which utline technlgy resurces a medical schl is expected t have, it was decided that the tpic f page 2 f 3

3 Gvernance/Strategy had the mst value. A wrking grup (MUN, Queens, Trnt, Western, NOSM and UBC) was struck t develp a briefing nte n gvernance with intentin t submit t the AFMC Bard f Directrs at the CCME. Infrmatics Discussin Grup: Is an pen frum that ccurs between CCME meetings t allw fr cntinued cllabratin and infrmatin exchange. Several meetings ccurred between CCME 2012 and CCME. The meetings are held via web cnferencing. Tpics included: mbile curriculum, guidelines and plicies, flipped classrms, bkmarking and archiving tls, learning bject repsitries. Many thanks t Marcelina Pitrwski (UBC), Deb Tieszer (UWO), and Steve Pennell (MUN) fr demnstrating leadership in bringing tgether participants frm acrss Canada fr these sessins. Benchmarking Survey: In previus years, the IRG cnducted annual surveys f its members fr benchmarking purpses. In 2011, it was decided t abandn a separate Canada nly survey in favr f participating in the well-established AAMC GIR Medical Schl IT Reprting Tl (nte: AAMC lgin required). The 2011 survey saw 100% participatin frm the AFMC schls. In 2012, AFMC schls were again encuraged t participate in the GIR survey. (Nte: at the time f writing this reprt the GIR survey results had yet t be released) Liaisn with AAMC Grup n Infrmatin Resurces (GIR) cntinues. Members f the AAMC all 17 Canadian schls are als encuraged t wrk as part f the GIR (and several are already active there). Infrmally, members f the IRG have been cntributing t the planning fr AAMC s GIR cnference t be held in Vancuver, June CANMEDIT listserv Dalhusie has kindly cntinued t hst an listserv which cntinues t be a rich frum fr infrmatin exchange amngst IRG cnstituents. CCME 2012 Cnference Planning Wrking Grup An ad-hc wrking grup with members frm MUN, U f Trnt, UWO, Queens, Laval, NOSM and UBC have been meeting semi-mnthly, cllabrating twards develping activities fr IRG events at the upcming CCME cnference Summary We welcme input and engagement frm ther AFMC Grups as well as the Bard n the matters discussed in this reprt and n any ther infrmatics-related matter.
