1 NHHAC NEWS The Newsletter of the North Hills Historic Auto Club SINCE Volume 46, Issue 9 SEPTEMBER 2016 The North Hills Historic Auto Club was founded in August of Meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month in the school cafeteria of St. Alphonsus church located on Church Road (Rt. 19 & Rt. 910) in Wexford, unless otherwise noted in the monthly newsletter. 2 NHHAC NEWS September 2016 Page 2 NORTH HILLS HISTORIC AUTO CLUB MINUTES August 14, 2016 On August 14, 2016, President Mike Quinn called the meeting to order following the Pledge of Allegiance. President Quinn inquired if there were any corrections or additions to the minutes of the July 10, 2016 meeting. There were none. Steve Parise motioned to accept the minutes and Jan Smith seconded. Jack Swaney read the treasurer s report. Current cash balance is $2, Mary Jo Phillips made a motion to accept the treasurer s report and Phil Deakin seconded. Wellness Report Roger Boff had been hospitalized with a blood disorder. He is now on hospice care at home. Old Business September 11 is club picnic. No one is required to bring any food as picnic will be catered. Members should arrive around 12 noon. We will eat around 1:30. Jack Swaney will supply pop and water. Mary Jo Phillips will supply snack chips. Anyone wanting to play Mary Jo s bingo should bring a small gift for the prizes. Cutoff date for sign-up is September 1. Directions to picnic site appear elsewhere in this newsletter. New officers are up for election at the end of the year. Nominating committee will be selected at the picnic. New Business Possible location for flea market is Drive Time (old McCracken Sturmin) on McKnight Road. Daryl Elliott will do preliminary investigating. Beloved husband of Elizabeth "Betty" Boff for 60 years; Loving father of Linda Hoskin (Jack), Beth Day (Rob), Roger Boff (Cheryl), Chantal Ferris (Paul), Greg Boff (Linda) and Becca Reinhold (Matt); Adored grandfather and greatgrandfather of 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; Brother of Kathleen Ford and Dennis Boff. Roger was a member of Northway Christian Community, the Pittsburgh Banjo Club, The North Hills Historic Auto Club and the Penn Allegheny Chapter of I.F. R. C.. Friends and family received on Sunday and Monday 1-4 pm and 6-9 pm at the George A. Thoma Funeral Home, Inc Perry Hwy., Wexford. Funeral services on Tuesday at 11 am at the funeral home. This is my 5th year as newsletter editor for the North Hills Historic Auto Club. It has been enjoyable (for the most part) but I m ready to step aside and let someone else have the fun. I plan to stay in the position through the end of the year, with the newsletter going out at the end of December (the January 2017 issue) being my last. If you can type, you can be the new editor. You can prepare it using Word, Publisher, or whatever software you re comfortable with. You can even use an old fashioned typewriter and cut-and-paste it together. Please speak up if you re willing to step in and take this job. As MJ said 5 years ago when she was looking for someone to take over, No editor, no newsletter. It worked on me. 6 NHHAC NEWS September 2016 Page 6 WHAT S IN YOUR GARAGE? This month, Bob Dudeck shares photos and stories of his cars. If you would like to tell people about your car, contact the editor. My dad bought the '39 Ford convertible in 1954 as a hobby fun car. He had it repainted black and installed a later full race Ford flathead V-8 with Stromberg 97's, aluminum heads, duals with glasspacks,etc. My parents drove it on many road rallyes with a local sports car club and several vacation trips. The grainy attached photo of my dad and me with the '39 was taken in 1956 when I was six years old! Years later I drove the car to the Har-Brack High School Senior Prom in 1968, and then used it for a while as a daily commuter to the Penn State New Kensington campus. After that it sat in my parent's garage for decades before starting into a body-off nut and bolt restoration at my brother-in-law's shop in Blairsville (Westmoreland Antique Car Restoration). Presently the frame and running gear is completed and the body is in high build primer awaiting paint. Being a purist, I am having it changed back to its original factory Cloudmist Grey (appears green) with a black convertible top and LeBarron Bonney kit for the interior and rumble seat. Hopefully the car will be finished within a couple years. What s My Project? Do you have photos of a restoration you ve done, or one that you re knee deep in right now? 7 NHHAC NEWS September 2016 Page 7 The '54 Studebaker Champion Starliner was purchased as the family beater in A very important car for me as I learned to drive and passed my test with it, used it on my first date and then had it with me four years at Penn State in addition to it taking us on many family vacations. But the salt and slush of winters took its toll and by the seventies a decision had to be made whether to scrap it or restore it. As usual,sentiment won out and it was treated to a lengthy body-off restoration. Its first showing at a Studebaker Drivers Club International Meet brought home a "Best of Division" award. Through the Antique Automobile Club of America it has progressed to Senior, was nominated for a National Award and was invited to represent the year 1954 for the automotive timeline at AACA's 75th Anniversary show in Louisville, Kentucky. I bought the '64 Studebaker Avanti R2 (factory supercharged) in Other than a lacquer respray that I did 35 years ago and replating the bumpers, it is all original including upholstery, carpets and weatherstripping. Because it has not been restored, many detail photos were taken of it for a Studebaker Avanti authenticity book. It rolls on non-radial reproduction bias-ply Firestone Deluxe Champions and is driven everywhere. It brought both newborn daughters home from the hospital over 30 years ago, and is driven hundreds of miles to Studebaker Drivers Club/Avanti Owners Association International Meets. Being mostly all original, it has many flaws but shows well enough that it still manages to bring home first place awards with SDC and AOAI. With AACA it shows in the non-judged HPOF (Historic Preservation Original Features) class and has been driven to the Eastern Fall Meet at Hershey several times.
