Join the Tai Chi Qi Gong class starting up on Friday, September 14 th at 9:30 am. If you ve never tried Tai Chi, now is the time to start. An important element of Tai Chi is practicing mindfulness: that is focusing mind, body and spirit to be in the present through Qi Gong exercises. Qi Gong combined with the slow, meditative movements of the Yang 24 Form is known to improve balance, reduce stress, and circulate your body s natural energy to improve health. And, you can do that right here at New Horizons! For more information see the poster on the Clubhouse bulletin board. Sign up and check off whether you are New or Returning. I look forward to seeing you there! Elsie Wu, Instructor
2 LEAVING THE BOARD BUT NOT NEW HORIZONS As you all know, at the end of the month, I will be leaving the Board but will still be active on the Treasurer s Committee. Family pressures are demanding my time and it makes me unpredictable for Board work. Being on the Board of Directors means that one is a Fiduciary with certain legal duties to ensure the value of the investment that each owner has made in our community. I cannot say I don t have time today. Certain duties must be performed. Because my time will not be my own for the foreseeable future, it is in the best interest of the owners, that someone who is willing to devote the time, take over the position. I have enjoyed my time on New Horizons Board and I can verify that the professional and time demands of a Board member have increased dramatically. Even though I am unable to meet the demands of a Board position, I will still be available to help and assist where I can. I want to thank each and every one of you for your support over the years. Submitted by: Joanie Jones AGE VERIFICATION FORMS THIS FORM IS ONLY FOR those of you who have not completed this REQUIRED AGE VERIFICATION FORM. We are providing this form again as an insert in this Newsletter BECAUSE 150 UNITS HAVE STILL NOT COMPLIED! We can lose our status as a 55 & Older Community. THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA REQUIRES THIS FORM EVERY TWO YEARSTO BE COMPLETED BY ALL RESIDENTS WHO LIVE IN A SENIOR COMMUNITY. Please complete the Form and attach a copy of your proof of age. You may drop the form off at the Administration Office or send it via mail to New Horizons South Bay Association, Maple Ave, Torrance CA Joanie Jones, Board Secretary CHALLENGES OF THE MODERN BOARD The time challenges of the modern Board of Directors are equivalent to a full-time (for some Board members) or part-time job. The reason for this is the business environment in which Board Members are required to operate. In the past we have had a self-managed community and those involved really did a superb job. But self-management no longer works in a business environment where specialized professionalism is required. For instance, with the Association s aging structures it is not in the best interest of the owners to have a nonprofessional attempting to obtain and evaluate bids for large projects. It is much more solid to have the Board Members working with professionals in the HOA business, who can obtain bone fide bids and then present them to the Board for final decision. It is also in the best interest of the owners to have financials handled by industry professionals who are insured and bonded and can make recommendation for savings or expenditures based on the experience of many other condominium communities. An excellent business decision this year was to introduce Horizon Management into the Association s business. Horizon manages and does financials for 75 condominium communities only two of which were/are self-managed. The two are New Horizons South Bay Association with 600 units and the other Association with 22 units. Horizon has access to many vendors with a verified track history at other Association s, so it saves our Board Members from finding out after the fact whether a vendor is good or bad. Submitted by: Joanie Jones DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAM MEETING THURSDAY, AUGUST 30 TH AT 1:00 PM All residents are invited to attend a special DMT meeting with guest speaker, Chris Rhodes from the Torrance Fire Department. Chris will continue our disaster preparedness training on the use of our two gas generators, then help us plan our October special earthquake event. After a major Earthquake at New Horizons, decisions will be made by the communication center to get people to our first-aid station. All residents, area directors, building coordinators and DMT members need to attend this important workshop meeting in the Clubhouse Town Hall at 1 pm on Thursday, August 30 th. (Last month, we had very few residents in attendance at one of our more important meetings. Chris came although he was on vacation from the Fire Department during that week. Let s support Chris and be at our August meeting! Thank you.) Submitted by: Sumie Imada 2
3 To All Residents Are you all aware of the importance of attending and becoming mindful of major changes being proposed and implemented at New Horizons? Do attend the Board Workshops and Board Meetings that are scheduled on the second and third Wednesday of each month at 2:00 pm. It is most important that all of us are informed and are able to provide our skills and support to our Board of Directors to insure the fiscally responsible and smooth operation of our Community. We have many retired professional residents here and your input is needed! Consider joining a Committee!
