1 EAA CHAPTER 119 FLIGHTLINE EAA Chapter 119, 60 Aviation Way, Watsonville Airport, Watsonville CA July 2009 Something wonderful happened to me late last year; my daughter was born on December 26th. Then something not so wonderful (for me) happened, my wife went on maternity leave and I lost my carpool buddy for the drive from my home in Felton to my job in San Mateo. This would not be so bad, however, my car is getting older and the radio is on its last leg. So in a fit of boredom I started to search for something that would fill the void. And I found something wonderful, I found podcasts. So, I hear you wondering, what does this have to aviation?. Well as I drove back and forth, day after day, I needed more and more content to keep me entertained. So I explored. I am in awe of the quantity and quality of podcasts. More than that there is substantial selection aviation related podcasts: around 130 of them. So let s take a moment to talk about what is a podcast and where do I find them? Generally speaking a podcast is really just an audio file with a compression format known as MP3. I know that this doesn t sound like a revolution. The real revolution is in content delivery. Apple Computer, Inc. has produced a piece of software called itunes to manage mp3s, podcasts, movies, and the such. This software running on your home computer (Mac or Windows) will become the center of your multimedia library. Tell Me a Story by J.R. Warmkessel be automatically downloaded by itunes. An ipod, or iphone can be used to listen to podcasts on the road and is well integrated with itunes. There are so many podcasts available on such a wide range of topics that I have only started to scratch the surface. However, I have some recommendations that I would like to share with you: AOPA has a podcast named Never Again, it s a series of essays recounting some harrowing experiences that the authors/ pilots have found them selves in. There is the RV podcast, featuring RV builders who talk about their building and maintaining experiences. Avweb has an excellent podcast on what s going on in aviation. Don t miss the episode on what it takes to keep a Merlin engine running, one of the best that I have ever heard. Of the non-aviation related podcasts that I ve heard; there are several that I can recommend. If you are a fan of National Public Radio, there is substantial cross over, Car Talk, This American Life, Radio Lab all come to mind. Nova s podcasts provide a sampling of some of the up coming television programs. For any software engineers out there you might want to tune into the Stack Overflow podcast. Lastly, the O Reilly publisher has a series of podcasts that reflect some of the projects that are in the Make Magazine as well as Make Television Channel. Using itunes, you can access the itunes store. The itunes store facilitates the distribution of content such as music, movies and, yes, podcasts. In addition to paid content the store has a wide assortment of free content. All of the podcasts I ve found so far are free. Once you find a podcast that appeals to you, you can download the podcast (and all available past podcasts) to your computer and listen to it. You can also opt to subscribe to the podcast which when there is an update So in closing, some of those of you who are astute, will be wondering why, Tell me a Story. So please allow me to elaborate. Tell me a Story is a title of a you must know by now podcast that was produced as a special by the folks at Radio Lab. This podcast is one of my personal favorite of all time, perhaps it will be your favorite as well.
2 EAA CHAPTER 119, 60 AVIATION WAY, WATSONVILLE AIRPORT PAGE 2 President s Corner Hello, I hope everyone is enjoying the time off after the busy start of the year. Those who are going to Oshkosh are probably getting excited. The board selected a candidate to the Air Academy, Mathew Farquhar-Leicester from Santa Cruz. I am hoping he will make it to the July chapter meeting for us all to meet. Now, to some business. The DSL into the hanger has become a comedy. AT&T told us it wasn t available to us, we thought maybe we could connect via Pacific Aircare thinking they had cable internet. Turns out they have AT&T DSL. Sigh. So we will continue to try to find a way to get connected in the hangar without too much expense. It has to be possible, right? We are negotiating with Bob Van Wagenen to set up his ground schools in the hangar, now that the school year is over, maybe that will get completed. Builder support suggestions: With school out we can get some of the shop tools out onto the floor for easier access. Usage of loft storage of parts/bone trailer content? Parachute jumping out of Watsonville? Yes, Santa Cruz Skydiving has set up shop on the grass outside the terminal building providing tandem skydive jumps. For our operations during Young Eagle rallies we need to be aware of their jump area. The jump plane usually takes off to the coast and climbs out over the water to as high as 13,000 ft. To stay under clouds they may be down to 9000 ft. Canopies are open between 5 and 6000 ft. Their landing zone is on the beach just adjacent to Seascape Resort. As we fly Young Eagles up and down the coast, we need to stay inland over the highway as we normally do, but to also stay ¼ to ½ mile offshore around the landing area. Also monitor for jump announcements and keep an eye out for the canopies. We fly a busy airport, this shouldn t be a problem as we know where to look for them. I towed gliders at Byron airport for 10 years mixing our operation with a very active jump school and I never had a problem staying aware of that operation and working with the jump plane. Since Santa Cruz Skydiving is a week long operation, you can encounter them anytime you are flying around WVI. They are a nice bunch of people and give them a smile next time you head into Zuniga s. Or at the next Chapter meeting on 7 July, they are coming to give us a talk about sport parachuting. On 27 June Said Karssli and I flew over to Moffett Field for EAA62 s Young Eagle rally kids signed up with about 45 pilots to fly. It was much like Day in the Sky but with a control tower and F18 s. They made us submit insurance and liability paperwork to keep the government free of risk and each pilot got a PPR or PRR number to use when first calling in. Of course no one asked for it all day, but they did seem to have me on the list in the tower when I called in. We used the same transponder code all day, individual for each plane. As is usual for these things, the start was slow but once the rhythm got going it went well. Comparing Day in the Sky with this Moffett Field Young Eagles, it was certainly hotter and at least one point the traffic was just as thick in the air around the airport. I am not sure it was any safer with a tower, even with two huge runways. At Day in the Sky, there were fewer options, everyone had to follow the guy in front. At Moffett, the tower was juggling planes from two directions and two patterns. They did a great job and I didn t hear any conflicts but it is up for discussion in my mind if a tower at Day in the Sky would make anything better. With all that, Said and I had a great time, he had six flights and I had four. All seemed to be new to flying and most were excited about it. I hope to see some of these kids at our rallies coming up.

5 PAGE 5 First Solo by Jack Roberts July 4 will be on Saturday this year and Young Eagles will fly. I soloed for the first time on July 4, 1959 at Nelson Ryan Flight Service at Flying Cloud Field, EAA CHAPTER 119, 60 AVIATION WAY, WATSONVILLE AIRPORT just outside of Hopkins Minnesota. I will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of my first SOLO this year on the Fourth of July by flying Young Eagles. Do one takeoff and landing and if I wave you on, do two more. I did all three while he stood on the edge of the runway. I felt like the King of Flying Cloud. Nelson Ryan had eight of these Tri-Champs, numbered N7497 through N7504. They were a tricycle gear version of the original Aeronca 7AC. We had been out shooting landings for an hour. I had just under 10 hours when my instructor told me to make a full stop landing and return to the takeoff end of Runway 27. When we cleared the active and were on the taxiway, he said I m getting out, stay cool and you re on your own. He got back in and congratulated me. We went back to the FBO and he took the documenting picture with a Polaroid. Fortunately he didn t cut up my shirt.
