1 Volume 51, Issue 4 T HE SCRIPTUM O CTOBER 2012 Update From the Governing Council Sally Stenger, PP, PLS Membership Director And Scriptum Editor The GC had been planning to have an Employer Appreciation Day event in October, in honor of the fact that Boss s Day is October 16. However, after a certain amount of discussion back and forth, the GC came to the conclusion that it was not going to be able to make this event come together this month. In addition, several members are going to attend the NALS Forum in Portland, and there just seemed to be too much on their plates at this time. So we are skipping this month and our next event is going to be next month. We will be having a regular Tuesday CLE, but it will be on the second Tuesday (Nov. 13), rather than the third Tuesday, so it will be a little bit in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The month after that, December, we will have a Holiday Social at Mary Mac s, which will also be on the second Tuesday (Dec. 11). In the meantime, everyone please wish a Happy Boss s Day to your boss on behalf of NALS OF ATLANTA. -Sally Stenger of Atlanta...the association for legal professionals

7 Volume 51, Issue 4 Page 7 NALS NEWS AROUND NALS As Region Director, Leslie Keys recently attended the AALS Fall Membership Meeting (Alabama). CERTIFYING EXAMS Best wishes to all those who took their certifying exams in September. NALS ELECTION RESULTS Congratulations to Leslie Keys and Lisa Mitchum, who were re-elected to their positions as Region 4 Director and NALS Membership Director, respectively. The proposed bylaw amendment has passed and should be implemented in the year to come. DONNA TUCKER Donna Tucker has now moved to Tuscaloosa, where she is from, and is employed at the University of Alabama Law School. However, she reports that there is no NALS chapter in Tuscaloosa and that therefore she is being allowed to retain her membership in NALS OF ATLANTA for the time being. I am sorry to hear that there is no NALS chapter in Tuscaloosa. However, their loss is our gain. I understand Donna hopes to continue to attend Atlanta events whenever she gets a chance. It is good that Donna is so loyal to Atlanta and we look forward to her continuing participation. RETIREMENT Terry Cohea has recently retired from Duane Morris.

8 Volume 51, Issue 4 Page 8 Sunshine Corner Happy birthday to our October babies, and according to my list that means me! Am I really the only October birthday in NALS of Atlanta. Does that mean I have to send my own ecard? Happy Birthday to Me, Happy Birthday to Me... and with that, I say goodbye to my 20's and embrace a new, more mature 30-year-old-self. I hope everyone has a wonderful Halloween this year. Whether you plan on spending it with your children, grandchildren, or with friends, remember to enjoy the day... taking part in life's little moments keeps us all young! October 15 Lindsay Stinchcomb, PP, PLS If you hear of any events affecting our members, please let me know. I would love the opportunity to reach out to all of our members individually no event is too small!! Lindsay A. Stinchcomb, PP, PLS lstinchcomb@phrd.com

9 Volume 51, Issue 4 Page 9 NALS OF ATLANTA MINUTES OF CLE AFTER HOURS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2012 The meeting was called to order at 6:40 p.m. by Leslie Keys, PP, PLS, the member of the Governing Council who presided over this September CLE After Hours. There were seven Atlanta chapter members in attendance. Ms. Keys introduced the speaker for the evening, Deborah O Connor, Social Strategist of Successful Image. Ms. O Connor made a presentation to the group entitled Your Social Media Use Requires Netiquette, followed by a lively discussion period about concerns and pitfalls of having a social media presence on such sites as Twitter and Facebook. Business of NALS of Atlanta was then discussed among the membership. Dates for the Employers Appreciation Brunch and the annual Christmas party were discussed. Mary Mac s Tea Room was not available on October 13 th, which was initially the date scheduled for the event. It was decided that October 27 th might work and Leslie Keys agreed to contact Mary Mac s concerning that date and also the availability of December 11 th for the Christmas party. Mary Jo Denman, PP, PLS, discussed NALS of Atlanta s auction basket for the upcoming NALS Conference in Portland. It was suggested that items be included that would represent (and could be used in) Atlanta, since the annual conference will be held here next year. Irene Talerico won the Ways and Means drawing for a bottle of wine and a wine bottle stopper. It was then determined that no further business needed discussion. The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m. by Ms. Keys. Submitted by: Irene N. Talerico, PLS Secretary

16 Volume 51, Issue 4 Page 16 FROM THE EDITOR: I am pleased to be able to report that we now have 37 members. We have a new member, Nancy Wilson. Continuing member Donna Tucker reports that NALS has agreed to let her continue as a member of the Atlanta chapter because there is no chapter in Tuscaloosa, where she has moved. Meanwhile, Terry Cohea has retired from Duane Morris. I was not able to attend the September meeting due to the conflict with my class schedule. I was really sorry to have to miss it, but I trust that everyone had a good time. We have some nice photos of the meeting in this issue, courtesy of Nancy Mikacevich, PLS. Events coming up in the near future include the NALS Forum in Portland, which is the third weekend in October. Another event is the Cobb County seminar, which is being held Friday, October 26. They always have very interesting seminars. In the meantime, my classes are going pretty well. Rather strangely, I am taking 3 night classes this semester (in addition to the 2 classes I am taking during the day). This semester I will be taking the professional responsibility exam. This is an exam that is intended to make sure that lawyers are familiar with ethical issues involving the practice of law. Another thing I will be doing is filling out my character and fitness application, which people tell me involves a lot of very tedious paperwork. I will not be able to resume attending meetings until December. In the meantime, please keep me posted electronically with any news that you may have. GUIDELINES for submitting articles to the Scriptum: AD RATES are on page 3. DEADLINE FOR ARTICLES is the end of the month.
