2 Share Your Tip and Jig Ideas Wish you could spend a little more time at show and tell explaining your construction tips or jigs? Well, the show and tell time limits are necessary to make sure we give our presenters adequate time for their program. Still, there is another avenue left for you to express your ideas. Write an article for the newsletter with a couple of photos to help illustrate it. If you it to woodworkers@fvwwc.org, I will be glad to include it in a future newsletter. Lee Nye Newsletter Editor Da Big Raffle! The two $75 Woodcraft gift cards will be raffled at the April 2 meeting. There will be time before the drawing to purchase a ticket. The ticket price remains the same (no inflation here) - $5 each or 3 for $10 for members only. There will be 2 winners. The next BIG RAFFLE item will be announced at the April meeting. It is something unique and something you would probably not buy for yourself. Norm Musur & Bill Knudson Raffle and Silent Auction Committee Fundamentals SIG Leader We have a new leader for the Fundamentals SIG - Michael Rauchmiller (Rocky). Thanks Rocky for volunteering. More details as to when and where the SIG will meet to be announced at the meeting. Bigger Discount from Hartville Tool. 3 I have decided to expand the library in a slightly different direction. I have received a number of requests for blanket chest plans. Rather than run the same search several times, I decided I should store the results. Then I realized that just the listings didn t provide enough information. So I thought if I extracted each of the plans, I could put them on a single DVD in the library. It turns out that there are over 50 different blanket chests (or variations thereof) in our magazines. So I ve extracted them all. But then I discovered that they didn t fill up even a small fraction of a DVD. So I decided to include all the farmhouse / harvest / dining tables which is the second most popular request. But there were only 13 table plans available. Back to the drawing board, I gathered together all coffee table plans. There were over 70 of those. So that DVD has been added to the library. Still this is just a drop in the proverbial DVD bucket, so I will continue this process and keep adding topics as they come up. If you have a project in mind, just send a query to Rsource@FVWWC.org. Dave Dockstader, Resource Director An Update from Howard Van Valzah My new workshop is about 5 x 8, very compact and surprisingly functional, capable of doing only one job at a time and then clean up and start next job. Club members might be interested in seeing it. I ve completed a small table already and now making a bloodwood bowl 5 diameter by 3 deep with black limba triangles affixed to flat hex side walls. My health is not the greatest but being worked on continuously. I miss the Club Meetings and friends! 2019 FVWWC PO Box 1047 Batavia, IL

7 Shop Tours Current Event: The April 2019 Shop Tour is a do-it-yourself affair. A couple of club members are participating in the Fox River Arts Ramble on Saturday, 13 April and Sunday, 14 April so it is fitting we dedicate this month s tour to support their exhibits. Jeff Walsma is exhibiting under the banner of The Dutchman s Woodshack. Jeff will demo woodturning on request as part of his exhibit as well as feature picture frames that complement his and his wife s photography. Jeff is exhibiting from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on both days at 315 Westhaven Circle, Geneva. Tim Schlapp is exhibiting under his own banner also known as Short Bench Wood Works. Tim will be displaying handcrafted wood pieces primarily from locally sourced wood. Tim is exhibiting from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at the SciTech Museum at 18 W. Benton St. in Aurora. Please see the Fox River Arts Ramble (Click here) web site for the latest information. There should be a map on the web site that wasn t available at the time of this writing. Future Events: May 2019 No tour scheduled yet. If you can host a tour for May please contact me at wtknudsen@gmail.com June 2019 Dave Burk s shop in Oswego July No tour scheduled yet. 8 President s Sawdust Tom Sharp, President FVWWC The editorial musings of your president which maybe serious, funny, technical, or philosophical, but hopefully always entertaining. DID YOU FIX THAT Being retired is great. I get to spend more time in the workshop. Before retirement, I had visions of making a magazine rack, building a display case, or creating a fancy inlayed coffee table. Making new things is fun. As far as spending more time in the shop, I certainly have been able to live my dream. However, I didn t realize how much involvement my wonderful wife would have toward that endeavor. A new part of retirement is that my wife and I now play the game, DID YOU FIX THAT YET. It s not a new game but one that is being played with much more frequency and gusto since we re both home now. The game has an officious and formal start, much like the bang of a starting gun at a track meet s sprint match. Usually this is when I m just settled into a good nap in my favorite easy chair. With a loud and piercing voice, Diana cries, Did you fix the (insert whatever is broken)? The response is not a verbal reply. Instead, the reaction is to grab the object that is broke along with the keys to the shop and get through the back door and shut it behind you in the fastest time possible. This is done in one blurred fluid-like motion. Firemen would learn much from observing this game. Coming out of the fog of a peaceful slumber and being able to gather the requisite pieces and bolt out of the house under a certain time would teach much to these professionals. Failure to be quick is to have to endure the inquisition. If not out the door under a number of seconds, the game requires you to answer a series of questions. How much time has been given to get the object fixed? Is there a timeline of when it will be repaired? And what have you been doing with your time? I wanted to get away from fixing items and start making furniture. To do so, I needed a strategy to disrupt this process. I learned the best tactic is to be deceptively proactive. The Repair List, an itemized inventory of objects to be fixed, is a great source for my wife to draw from. My approach is twofold. First, is to repair the item at the top of the list but not check it off. When my fine wife starts the game, I don t go into the mode of grab and skedaddle. Instead, I smugly state, Already done. When the second item on the list is queried, my reply is, One thing at a time. This disturbs the normal practice. It changes the course of events and gives me an advantage. Hopefully, the game is played in the morning. If all goes well, I can now slip off to the wood shop and use the rest of the day making what ere I please. If you are retired and caught up in the DID YOU FIX THAT game, please try this approach. You will still have to do repairs but at least you will be on top of the game instead of the bottom FVWWC PO Box 1047 Batavia, IL

9 Neglected Bandsaw Maintenance Last month when I was photographing my bandsaw for the dust port article, I noticed that my lower guide bearings were filled with dust and actually frozen. They did not turn at all. This can t be very good for the blade! I was a bit surprised because these are fairly new (maybe 3 years or so) Carter guides and the bearings are said to be sealed. Well, they might look like they are sealed, but dust still managed to build up inside the bearings (photo right). Lee The main point of this article is to recommend that you check your guide bearings every so often to avoid this problem. I think the lower bearings are more likely to get clogged because the blade action pulls more of the dust down under the table. Also, the lower bearings are out of sight and harder to examine. If you don t change your blades very often, you are likely to neglect checking these bearings. Fixing the problem is pretty straightforward. I use a utility knife to pop off the bearing seals on both sides. Use compressed air to blow out the dust, a blast of WD-40 to clean the bearings, and then a few drops of very light oil to lubricate. Give the bearing a few turns to make sure it is freed up okay. Replace the seals and you are done. If the outside of the bearings have accumulated some pitch, use a little WD-40 and 0000 steel wool to clean that as well. Hmm, now that I have the guide bearings cleaned, I note that there is a lot of dust buildup on the tires. Clearly maintenance has been neglected FVWWC PO Box 1047 Batavia, IL
