1 MONTRE Newsletter of the Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of the American Guild of Organists JANUARY 2018 CHAPTER LEADERSHIP Dwane Grace, Dean Nancy Siebecker, Sub-Dean Susan Crumpler, Treasurer Johnora Hildebrand, Secretary The Rev. Charleston Wilson, Chaplain EXECUTIVE BOARD David Guyet, Phyllis O Keef, Jim Johnston Class of 2018 John Ferreira, Bill Holt, Charles Wolf Class of 2019 Carolyn Reynolds, James Walton Class of 2020 OTHERS Janet Davis, Hospitality TBD, Historian Phyllis O Keef, Registrar Bill Holt, Advertising Dan Crumpler, Webmaster John Ferreira, Placement/Substitutes Michael Trezise, Newsletter Paul Adams, TAO Reporter FROM THE DEAN Here we are at the beginning of a new calendar year and just a few weeks into a new liturgical year. Before we know it, the season of Lent will be here. January 6 is the Feast of Epiphany and initiates the liturgical season of Epiphanytide. Popular Epiphany customs include Epiphany singing, chalking the door, winter swimming, parties with Three Kings Cake, as well as attending church services. It is also customary to remove your Christmas decorations on Epiphany Eve. In many cultures, the eve of Epiphany is celebrated with Twelfth Night parties, and your events committee has planned a Twelfth Night Social (albeit a couple of days late) for you on January 8. There will be treats, drinks, and maybe even wassail and a King s Cake. Twelfth Night parties traditionally include games and so we will have some musical (organ) trivia to challenge you. Our church positions provide few opportunities for us to really get to know our musical colleagues, so here is a great way to meet and socialize with those with common interests and frustrations! Besides, you need to relax after all of the preparation, rehearsals, and programs of the Advent and Christmas seasons! Hope to see you on January 8, 7:00 pm at First Congregational UCC, 1031 South Euclid Avenue, Sarasota. We will be meeting in the Chapel/choir room. Dwane Grace, Dean MONTRE CONTENT DEADLINE Content for the February 2018 issue of Montre is due to Michael Trezise (mwtrezise@gmail.com) no later than January 24, 2018.
2 Page 2 CHALKING THE DOOR On the Twelfth Night (January 5) many Christians chalk their doors with a pattern such as this, 20 C M B 18, with the numbers referring to the calendar year (2018); the crosses for Christ; and the letters have a two-fold significance: C, M, and B are the initials for the traditional names of the Magi (Casper, Melchior, and Balthasar), but they are also an abbreviation of the Latin blessing Christus mansionem benedicat, which means May Christ bless this house. IN MEMORY We are sadden to report that our past secretary, Kathy Master Pendergrass passed away on December 9. Her memorial service was held on December 23. HISTORICAL VIGNETTES When the Manatee Chapter held its organizational meeting on June 2, 1952, Ann Ault, the AGO State Chairman explained that it would be necessary to have 15 prospective members sign a petition to organize a chapter (27 church musicians and pastors made application). There was an initiation fee of $2.00. At the time, AGO dues (January 1 Dec 31) were $4.00/year - $1.10 went to National, $1.50 for a subscription to The Diapason, and $1.40 was retained by the local chapter. Following a successful public recital by chapter member Miss Leonora Stewart in July, the Manatee Chapter engaged Claude L Murphree FAGO to present a public recital at First Presbyterian Church, Bradenton on January 27, Murphree was University Organist at the University of Florida. A newspaper clipping says that he had played the dedicatory recital on the Malcolm S Edmond Memorial Organ at Manatee County High school on November 11, The Organ Historical Society doesn t list this organ in their database. Anyone know what happened to it? Still there? Builder? AGO NATIONAL CONVENTION See page 5 for details.
