Ravindran, President Rotary International Tara Craaybeek, Rotary District Governor District 6690 Maryjane Shackelford, President Zanesville Daybreak Zanesville Daybreak Rotary Meeting 1/7/16 WELCOME President Maryjane Shackelford welcomed everyone to Barnes Advertising, as she and the entire company kicked off their 100th Anniversary Celebration. She also thanked our greeters Jack Russett and Randy Ruggles. INVOCATION Scott Griffiths delivered the invocation. ANNOUNCEMENTS Bruce Barclay thanked all the volunteers who rang the bell for The Salvation Army and announced that our club had collected $ Paul Nestor received a warm round of applause after stating that 12 Days of Christmas was over. The final 12 Days tally will be announced soon. Maryjane had everyone pause for a moment of silence to remember Erin Kennedy (President of the Newark Rotary) who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. On a much lighter note, MJ announced that McInturf Insurance and John Pattison had changed locations and that Blair Tom as celebrating his 13 year Daybreak Rotary anniversary. Jen Cushman gave a brief preview of the Jan. 28th program that will focus on International Youth Exchanges. She asked everyone to be on the lookout for families that could take in an exchange student and also let the International Committee know if they knew of any students that would be interested in going to another country. PROGRAM Maryjane kicked off the program by introducing her awesome Barnes Advertising staff. The first group she recognized was the billboard team (including the first dude Jeff Shackelford). The bill posters are the ones that make Barnes Advertising look good and are out in all kinds of weather making sure clients signs are up and seen. Next was the sales team - Joe Panzica, Chad De Mattei (who also helps with leases) and Stephanie Ansel. Maryjane called her sales team amazing. According to MJ, Rob Nichols and Josh Oiler, who head the design team, are the creative geniuses that make the magic happen at Barnes

2 Advertising. Next was Charlotte Hinkle who is in charge of accounts and will be retiring at the end of the year. Last but not least, Maryjane introduced her brother, John Barnes, who has been and is involved in all aspects of the business. paint many different bulletins and constructed many monopoles. David passed away in 1981, leaving Roderick (Maryjane s dad) as the sole owner of the company. Rod grew the business from a few counties to 12 and developed a software program to help run the business. The program is still used today. Rod also moved the company from its downtown location to the current location on Fairview Rd. Rod retired in 2009 after 52 year in the business. John Barnes discussed the evolution of the company in terms of products and industry changes. John said that the original signs were hand painted on wet strength paper and have evolved to today s ECO boards that are vinyl, with designs created by graphic designers, printed on them. The latest innovation in signs is the digital sign which can be changed almost instantly. John also told the group that Barnes Advertising is now recycling their used materials and the material is compacted and melted down and used for railroad ties and other plastic ware. They are also converting to LED bulbs which conserve energy and are brighter. CLOSING Judy Ross spoke up and thanked Barnes Advertising for their service and help to Rotary over the years. President Maryjane concluded the meeting by inviting everyone to look around the plant and enjoy some birthday cake. She also reminded everyone that the January 14th meeting will be at Weatherington Woods. JANUARY 14 MEETING AT WEATHERINGTON WOODS BANQUET HALL Maryjane ran through the history of the company beginning with her great Grandfather Erwin who operated his outdoor advertising company in Boston under the name Mr. Barnes of Boston before selling the company with plans to move to California. Earl ended up stopping and staying in Zanesville and started the Zanesville Outdoor Advertising Company. Beryl Barnes began running the company after his father (Erwin) passed away and in the 1960 s changed the name to Barnes Advertising as he expanded the company into other counties. David Barnes and Roderick Barnes were the third generation to run the company. David was a talented sign painter and welder. He would Directions: Rt 60 North Turn left at light onto Olde Falls Rd.
