3 Welcome Word Malo Mofakhami President of EYP-France Dear delegates, In 2014, the European Youth Parliament - France is organising a very special International Forum, as part of the official commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, from the 29th of May to the 8 th of June. The event will give young people the opportunity to re-think and re-create a new Europe, based on its most fundamental values, which were forged in its many birthplaces, one of which being this major historical event. For 11 days, you will have the opportunity to discuss key issues regarding the future of a peaceful Europe, to exchange and share with 150 young people from Europe and across the globe. Combining the commemorations, our common memory and history, but also thinking about the future, this Forum will give you the opportunity to discover or rediscover this period of history, to meet great figures of European integration and become actors of in our common history and future. EYP members or not, young Europeans, young people from any country - you are all invited to attend this event under the sign of Democracy, Freedom and the idea of Europe. Looking forward to seeing you at the forum, Malo MOFAKHAMI 3
4 About EYP-France The European Youth Parliament (EYP) was founded in 1987 in Fontainebleau (France). For 25 years, the association has worked to increase the awareness of young people of their possibilities to exercise their citizenship on a European dimension. It has grown internationally and is now supported by the institutions of the European Union and the Council of Europe. Nowadays, the European Youth Parliament benefits from a strong network of national organisations in over 36 European countries, in and beyond the current borders of the European Union. Since its creation, the European Youth Parliament has aimed to involve young people, from 16 to 25 years of age, in the construction of Europe and European public debate during events without partisan political connotations. It holds parliamentary sessions, based on European Parliament meetings, at regional, national and European scale. These give young people a unique opportunity to share with their European neighbors in a spirit of tolerance and exchange, while getting involved in the democratic process. The European Youth Parliament-France (EYP-France) is a non-partisan, nonprofit association and a member of the European Youth Parliament network. EYP-France relies on a network of 1,000 active volunteers, 12 regional committees and EYP clubs based in 100 colleges and universities throughout the country to organize its many activities such as: a summer forum for students and young professionals, held for more than a week. It brings together about 100 to 200 young Europeans from 18 to 25 years of age; national and regional sessions, lasting 1 to 3 days for students as well as conferences, exhibitions and European debates; information campaigns and consultations with young people across Europe; the celebration of Europe Day on May the 9th and the organization of cultural weeks in Europe. Through these events, EYP-France allows students to become familiar with the democratic process and understand the importance of active citizenship. They experience the art of democratic debate and mutual respect and to learn to discuss in pluralistic environments. EYP-France also supports and enables the development of personal leadership and project management and allows all participants to live a unique and enriching experience of citizenship. 4
5 International forum in Caen On the 6 th of June 1944, the Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy to free Europe from Nazism. On the 6 th of June 2014, Normandy will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the battle that drew a turning point in the history of Europe. The newspaper Ouest-France, the Caen Memorial and the IAE of Caen requested the European Youth Parliament - France to create an event that will be responsible for opening the debate European youth around this common past. For 11 days, you will come there to recreate the functioning of the European Parliament, you will be divided into 10 committees and you will draft resolutions that we want to give, on the 6 th of June, to the Heads of State present at official ceremonies. You will also be invited to participate in other commemorational events : An debate on common European History ; A round table with the great witnesses of Europe ; A Karl Jenkins concert for peace at the Caen Memorial ; And we might participate in official commemorations on the 6th and the 7 th of June, attended by Heads of State. The forum in a few words: An event recognized worldwide ; An event that is part of the official program of the commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy ; An event that will bring the European touch to the commemorations ; An event under the High Patronage of the President of the French Republic. 5
