1 Core Content Curriculum Map: Bourbon County Schools Level: Middle School Grade and/or Course: 7th Grade Social Studies School Year: Kentucky Academic Standards Social Studies Seventh Grade Government and Civics 2.14 Students understand the democratic principles of justice, equality, responsibility, and freedom and apply them to real-life situations Students can accurately describe various forms of government and analyze issues that relate to the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Cultures and Societies 2.16 Students observe, analyze, and interpret human behaviors, social groupings, and institutions to better understand people and the relationships among individuals and among groups Students interact effectively and work cooperatively with the many ethnic and cultural groups of our nation and world. Economics 2.18 Students understand economic principles and are able to make economic decisions that have consequences in daily living. Geography 2.19 Students recognize and understand the relationship between people and geography and apply their knowledge in real-life situations. Historical Perspective 2.20 Students understand, analyze, and interpret historical events, conditions, trends, and issues to develop historical perspective.
2 Unit 1: Introduction to Social Studies Length: 3 weeks Topics: How to read a Map, Oceans, Continents, Five Themes of Geography, How to read a Timeline, Forms of Government, Primary and Secondary Sources. Why is it important to be able to read a map? What are real world examples of the five themes of geography? How does geography apply to the study of ancient history? How does a timeline help me to understand historical events? What different forms of government were used in ancient civilizations? How and why do we learn about the past? 3 Unit 2: Early Humans Length: 2-3 weeks Topics: Types of Hominids, Paleolithic Era, Neolithic Era. How did ancestors of early humans evolve and advance? How did human society change from the Paleolithic Era to the Neolithic Era? Vocabulary: Hominid, Stone Age, Paleolithic Era, Tool, Hunter-Gatherers, Nomads, Scarcity, Migrate, Ice Age, Land Bridge, Society, Neolithic Era, Domestication, Agriculture, Permanent Settlement I can describe the achievements of early hominids and how they evolved. What makes a settlement a civilization? Why did civilization develop in Mesopotamia? What makes Sumer a civilization? How have the civilizations of Mesopotamia impacted our history?
