1 WS/FCS Unit Planning Organizer Subject(s) Social Studies Conceptual Lenses Grade/Course 9 th Grade Trade Unit of Study Rise and Fall of Empires (2.2, 2.4, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9) Culture Achievements Unit Title Unit 3: Effects of Expanding Empires Pacing 9 days (block) Unit Overview Points of focus in this unit include the influence of trade networks, systems of government and law and societal structure. Students will develop the understanding of: Rise of Empires: The desire to secure a civilizations territory and secure economic resources leads to a rise of empires. Economic Activity and Cultural Diffusion: The acquisition of new territory leads to increased economic activity and allows for the exchange of cultural ideas. Fall of Empires: Internal and external factors contribute to the fall of empires. Cultural Achievement: The achievements of empires have an enduring cultural impact. Unit Enduring Understanding(s) Unit Essential Question(s) 1. Complex institutions often evolve to encourage political and economic growth. 2. Trade often results in cultural diffusion. 3. A civilization s achievements can impact future societies. 1. How can complex institutions lead to political and economic growth? 2. How dos trade lead to the spread of ideas? 3. 2 Essential State Standards Priority Objectives Supporting Objectives Analyze the governments of ancient civilizations in terms of their development, structure and function within various societies (e.g., theocracy, democracy, oligarchy, tyranny, aristocracy, etc.). : Analyze the rise and spread of various empires in terms of influence, achievements and lasting impact ( e.g. Mongol, Mughal, Ottoman, Ming, Mesoamerica, Inca, Imperial states in Africa, etc.). : Analyze the relationship between trade routes and the development and decline of major empires (e.g. Ghana, Mali, Songhai, Greece, Rome, China, Mughal, Mongol, Mesoamerica, Inca, etc.). WH.H.2.1 Compare how different geographic issues of the ancient period influenced settlement trading networks and the sustainability of various ancient civilizations. WH.H.2.3: Explain how codifying laws met the needs of ancient societies (Hammurabi, Draco, Justinian, Theodosius, etc.). WH.H.2.5 Analyze the development and growth of major Eastern and Western religions (Including but not limited to Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Shintoism, etc.). The rise of Empires is often linked to the need to ensure domestic security and acquire economic resources. What factors contribute to the growth of empires? Trade Routes * Silk Roads The achievements of a society often contribute to its economic and political expansion as well as its cultural influence on those outside the society. Analyze the governments of ancient civilizations in terms of their development, structure and function within various societies. Empires often codify laws, sustain a military and develop political systems to manage and control a diverse population. What political factors lead to unity within an empire? As a society increases in complexity and interacts with other societies, the complexity of government increases. 3

4 WH.H.2.8 Compare the conditions, racial composition, and status of social classes, castes, and slaves in ancient societies and analyze changes in those elements. As empires expand the population often becomes more diverse and social structure become more complex. What factors create and sustain complex social structures and diverse societies? Caste Religion and economics shapes an empire s social hierarchy and as a result the lives of various groups of people. Analyze the relationship between trade routes and the development and decline of major empires. Economic Activity and Cultural Diffusion An increase in trade allows empires to expand and develop a sense of unity. Fall of Empires Empires can weaken from internal corruptions and external threats. What economic factors lead to unity within an empire? What factors lead to the decline and fall of empires? Cultural Diffusion Centralization of Power Interregional Trade Accumulation of Power by Rome Timbuktu African Caravan Silk Road The movement of people, goods, and ideas bring about the rise and spread of new belief systems that may unify societies - - but also facilitate major sources of tension and conflict. Territorial conflicts lead to the rise and fall of empires. 4

Language Functions LO: SWBAT explain how societal structure can influence the quality of life. (I.E.- how did the feudal system effect the quality of life.) Language Skills LO: SWBAT read a passage about the decline of an empire and identify the cause and effects of the decline. (Reading passages should be chosen/modified in accordance with the LEP students zone of proximal development). Grammar and Language LO: SWBAT use comparatives in writing assignments (more than, 5

6 less than, greater, shorter, longer, etc.) by comparing the decline of two empires. Lesson Tasks LO: SWBAT read and summarize a passage about the decline of a empire and explain this summary to a group. Language Learning Strategy LO: SWBAT develop a cause/effect graphic organizer analyzing and identifying the causes and effects of the decline of one empire. (The linguistic load will vary from LEP student to LEP student. Level 1-2 LEP students may need a word bank or other supplement to complete this activity using this strategy).
