This newsletter is dedicated to the creative and thoughtful minds in our college. Being a member of a political community, it is our duty to socialize and mobilize others on various social and political issues. I am conﬁdent that the students in general and the students of political science in particular of our college will inculcate Civic virtue in their daily lives and grow up as alert, dutiful, responsible citizens. I congratulate all the faculty members, editorial board and especially to the students for bringing out such a beautiful newsletter. My very best wishes for the success of the newsletter. Applaud a brave woman not by saying you are brave like man; but by saying you are brave.if applauded for not being a woman but merely acting like a man; how should we take it: as a praise, an insult or a phase of an unexplained inequality. EQUALITY A NEW MISSION OR AN INCOMPLETE ONE? Women have created history through the years in all ﬁelds. If we talk about their development in India then getting its ﬁrst female defence minister or the time when BSF women soldiers led by Sub-Inspector Stanzin Noryang, performed biking stunts at the 69th republic day which displayed a mix of India's military might and cultural progress, counts high. These achievements form a perfect picture of acceptance but only appears symbolic in nature. As even today there are many women suffering and lacking opportunities. It is indeed true that we are living in a century where gender equality exists but we stand at a position where it's just prevailing for the sake of it. We are the survivors of the "unexplained inequality ", where we have the right to education, right to work; but what we don't have is an unbounded freedom. Women in the 21st century are willing to shine through their inner light like the sun not like the moon which is dependent to shine. Those days are gone when we wanted others to provide for us, women in the 20th century have created opportunities for us, it's time to grab those opportunities and create new ones so that together we become "the voice " for those who are unaware of it. We the privileged ones who have the opportunity to study and live life with respect should not take it for granted, instead work together to make equality stable. This phase of unexplained inequality can only come to an end when each one of us will have the right opportunity to maintain our status as equals. It is indeed true that in the 21st century not all girls are falling short of opportunities but till the time even one of us is left or denied, our struggle continues to an extent where our achievements will become our tools to break the barrier of inequality. - Vrinda Malik, 2nd year

FAILING HUMANITY I'm so tired of writing rape poems, I am even more tired of listening them. I'm so tired of seeing another Nirbhaya, I'm so tired of reading about a puppy being raped. I'm so tired. Just like a dying person is tired of fighting until he breathes his last, Like the soldiers are tired of the sound of bombs.

I'm so tired. Just like a dying person is tired of fighting until he breathes his last, Like the soldiers are tired of the sound of bombs. But we're all staring at a world Watching it burn And complaining about how ugly the ashes are. We're asked to be strong, To be fearless. How do we let our fear not take over us When it follows us everywhere? To the gym, to the marketplace To the school, to the office Wherever we go, It's there. My Constitution condemns "Discrimination" But my state leaves no chance to discriminate; MYTHOLOGY THEORY OF EVOLUTION To discriminate between me and the cows. While there were hundreds of rape cases against a women A girl like me, There wasn't even one against cows. Why is a puppy's rape less horrible than a woman's? Because that little creature is an animal, And she is a human? Each night when a wife gets raped, Each day when a girl is harassed, We lose I lose and you do too. Another person every day choses barbarity, We lose as human beings Because we fail to keep up with humanity. I am tired of failing, And watching humanity fail. I hope we realize atleast now That we're digging our own graves. st - Katyainee Singh 1 Year Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Satyapal Singh, recently questioned Darwin's theory of Evolution. In this context, it might be interesting to recall the theory of evolution in Hindu mythology. The Dasavatara, the ten incarnations described in the Bhagavatham carries a scientific accounts of the evolution of humankind, with a religio-mythological avour that makes it palatable for public consumption. Until 19th century, when Charles Darwin propounded the theory of evolution, the West had blind faith in the religious story of Creator and creation. Darwin's 'The Origin of Species' published in 1859, created a sensation but it offended the orthodox and the clergy. India found nothing new in Darwin's theory, as it was scientific restatement of the Dasavtara detailed in the Bhagavatham. The story began with the fish, aqua, and culminated in the human with the biological and intellectual evolutionary stages in between, spanning the stages of amphibian, land animal, man animal, dwarf, brute man, perfect man and practical man. As is characteristic of Indian mythology, the evolutionary theory too was presented not in isolation as a concept, but with a religious and spiritual avour. Matsya, kurma, Varahascha, Narasimhascha, Vamana, Ramo, Ramasha, Krishna ramascha, kalki janardana denotes fish, tortoise, boar, man animal, dwarf, Rama-1, Rama-2, Rama-3, respectively. Bhagavatham was perhaps the first document to come out with the theory of evolution from fish to man, similar to Darwin's theory, except that the Hindu concept of evolution was also about eventual enlightenment. VERACITY OF DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVES st Anchal Singh, 1 year Whenever we think about Loksabha sessions what do we comprehend in our minds...debating members, trying to prove one another wrong without knowing one another's views. If we ask to common people regarding activities in LOK SABHA they would definitely smatter regarding Cataclysmic nature and tumultuousness of the house, breaking of chairs and all those chaos created by so-called DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE. Is it really worth that even after 7 decades of th independence in 16 lok sabha just 25% MPs are matriculated, 18% are not even matriculated? The Situation of State Assemblies is even worse than LOK SABHA and RAJYA SABHA. In such circumstances, it would be ridiculous to expect healthy and mannered debates in our legislature. If we put a deep view over debate, it is actually the sum of plea and controversy which is called 'vaad' and 'vivad' in hindi. I think debate happens for two purposes...either to learn or to win. It seems that, no one is interested to learn or to understand what is right or what is wrong, rather how to win is more evident. They just want to prove each other wrong and in such

3 circumstances, the truth is lost somewhere and this situation is quite detrimental. If we talk about the solution for such trouble, I think the solution lies in empowerment of the opposition, yes it sounds strange and jolty but otherwise the pejorative nature of democratic representatives will continue. st Anchal Singh, 1 year WOMEN EMPOWERMENT: A MIRAGE "Behind every successful man, there is a woman" This shows the exact locus of women prescribed by our society, behind the man. But why so? Have we forgotten women leaders like Indira Gandhi and Pratibha Patil? Women face oppression, suppression, harassment, negligence and domination at all places. Baby girls are killed before they open their eyes. Almost every girl in our society faces harassment at each and every stage of their lives and blamed for the same. At this very moment all of us are supporting women, shouting loudly about women empowerment but the very next second the same us feels insecure in holding a pack of sanitary napkins in public. The situation has degraded to such and extent that Akshay Kumar has to come on streets to make people aware about sanitary napkins. All politicians out there always cry for women empowerment but still Triple Talaq bill is hanging in the middle, waiting eagerly to become a law but no, we just yell, we never act. Shame on all those leaders who have rejected the bill in Rajya Sabha (it passed in Lok Sabha). Just like this bill, the Women Reservation Bill still hangs in the parliament even after ages of arguments and cross arguments. Sixty years of Independence brought hopes that democracy would equilibrate gender representation; two decades ago, reservations opened local bodies to women. Major parties have since championed a bill that would extend reservations to the Lok Sabha, and the state legislative assemblies; the proposed law even made it through the Rajya Sabha. But the gender imbalance at higher political levels remains unaddressed. After decades of delays and posturing, it is time to pass the Women's Reservation Bill. Incidents like these force me to think why, why all this is happening? Why are we so scared of her, scared of her capabilities? Why don't we leave her free to develop the real being inside her? Time immemorial, women have faced extreme hardship and misogyny at every single place. It's high time to accept the realities and initiate the much needed change in the society. Former US President Barack Obama rightly said, "Change will never come if we wait for it". It is not about you or I, but together we can connect to destroy the shackles and set her free to sail in the ocean of opportunities. On the socio-economic front the condition of adult literacy rate in the period 2001-2011 has gone up significantly and the female literacy rate is growing faster than that of male; and even the

In the present era of increased globalization, privatization, industrialization, and easing FDI in various sectors, the investment from foreign investors is seen on a rise in On the socio-economic front the condition of adult literacy rate in the period has gone up significantly and the female literacy rate is growing faster than that of male; and even the gender gap has been reduced according to some data. But unfortunately the condition of education at the primary level is not that positive. Even today, in the remotest parts of the country, undoubtedly there are schools, but the situation is so grim, for instance the teacherstudent ratio is 1:100. Even the condition of high school students are not good- students who are about to appear for matriculation examination don't even know how to write their names. Sadly, these facts don't hog the limelight and go unreported. Information collected from first hand reports and personal experiences is the base of these facts; citing an example of the number of such schools in the backward districts of Balangir, Kalahandi and Koraput in Odisha. Juxtaposing the figures on the paper and the facts seen, a certain conclusion about the topic can't be reached because at a time when the people in power are improving foreign relations and speaking of communal harmony, the idea of Pseudo-Hindutva and moblynching is propagating as well. While the appointment of Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman as Defence Minister emphasizes women empowerment, the killing of Gauri Lankesh depicts how insecure and scared people are about other's opinions. We are buying -र तक, त य वष even ancillary things from our neighbours. A big chunk of the money that the people generate from their taxes is spent on meeting military expenditure. Every year we see a quantum jump in the military and armaments but not on education and health care. Nearly five to six thousand farmers commit suicide every year. More shocking is that we spent a large sum of the taxes on road building and on bullet trains. Though we regularly follow tall promises and sarcastic taunts from our government but hardly any grassroots development. The demonetisation promised a lot but hardly yielded any positive results. Rather it in icted additional burden on the economy. In a country where people don't know where to though rubbish the government is teaching a tax slab for GST that too to everyone whether they come under it or not. We are no longer a country of snake charmers but one where women are leading the projects in ISRO, developmental activities are focused and full- edged, and then there are still many people who believe in self-proclaimed Godman. One thing can be concluded however- India is growing rapidly with scientific developments and investments, but at the same time, there is a degradation of moral and social values. The actual development comprises development in both aspects and not just one, thus leaving us in a state where development is still miles to go. nd - Swati Mishra, 2 year

6 STUDENTS ORIENTATION Department of Political Science organised an Orientation Programme for the newly admitted political science students on 20 July, During the programme, new students were encouraged to understand the importance of academic virtues such as punctuality, regularity, sincerity and so on. Apart from students, even parents were motivated to regularly monitor performance and progress of their children. FRESHER'S WELCOME Department of Political Science organised Fresher's Welcome on 29 August, The programme started with selection of students' ofﬁce bearers. First year students were enthusiastically welcomed by their seniors. All the faculties of the department motivated newcomers with their encouraging words. With the conduct of Youth Parliament involving political science students, programme became more interesting.

7 PARENT, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS INTERFACE The Political Science department organised Parent-Teacher meeting on Friday, 22 nd September The main purpose of the meet was to create a common platform where teachers and parents come together to discuss variety of issues and problems related to students. REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION The Political Science department celebrated the 69th Republic Day of India on 24th January Students, staff and faculty members ﬁlled with a feeling of patriotism and dedication gathered in Sangam Parisar. The celebration started with the hoisting of the National Flag by the chief guest Shri Prahlad Krishnakant Rebhe, a freedom ﬁghter. The ag hoisting was followed by the National Anthem giving a glimpse of united nation. In his speech, Shri Rebhe talked about the importance of freedom and the Indian constitution highlighting its unique features such as Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic and Republic. The principal of the college, Dr. Anula Maurya also gave an insight on the various accomplishments achieved by the college and motivated the students for bringing more laurels for the college through their accomplishments. The program ended with the message to create a great nation through collective efforts from all individuals. NATIONAL VOTER'S DAY National Voters Day was celebrated in Kalindi College to enhance participation of young voters in the electoral process. The National Voters Day (NVD) is celebrated every year to mark the Foundation Day of Election Commission of India, which was established on 25th January The purpose of celebrating NVD in the college was to increase the enrolment of voters and also to spread awareness among students regarding effective participation in the electoral process. The programme was anchored by Dr. Rakhee Chauhan, faculty from Political Science Department of the college. Dr. Anula Maurya, principal of the college read out the pledge which was recited by a large number of students, faculty members and non-teaching staff. With the recitation of national anthem, the programme ﬁnally came to an end.
