4 About the Newspaper Audience Database The Newspaper Audience Database provides media buyers with easy access to fresh data on the size and composition of the audience for the top U.S. daily newspapers and their Web sites. The twice-yearly report, distributed by the Newspaper Association of America, is also available electronically, along with a file in Excel format, at The report is part of a larger industry initiative to provide advertisers with a comprehensive profile of the newspaper audience across various media platforms. Data from additional studies on engagement, shopping habits, advertising effectiveness and more will be released in the first and second quarters of Audience data are provided at the DMA level and is listed alphabetically by DMA and, within the DMA, alphabetically by newspaper. Data are also included for three national newspapers: The New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. The data were extracted primarily from Scarborough Research s 75 Local Market Studies, the primary source of newspaper audience ratings information in the U.S. The study is based on telephone interviews conducted between February 2004 and March 2005 (Release 1, 2005). Local market sample sizes range from 2,000 to more than 13,000. Scarborough s local-market newspaper audience and demographic data are audited and accredited by the Media Rating Council (MRC) and the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) for use in the ABC Reader Profile. The newspaper audience ratings information for the national editions of The New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal is from Scarborough s USA+ database and is based on more than 200,000 telephone interviews conducted between August 2003 and September 2004 (Release 2, 2004). Scarborough s USA+ database has been submitted for MRC accreditation. Four newspapers Austin American-Statesman, Chicago Tribune, San Jose Mercury News and Palm Beach Post have chosen to use data from The Gallup Organization s local market Studies of Media Usage. The local market sample sizes range from 1,700 in Austin and West Palm Beach to more than 6,000 in the Chicago DMA. Interview periods vary for each of the four newspapers. The Chicago Tribune data are based on telephone interviews conducted between January and December 2004, data for San Jose Mercury News are from the Spring 2004 study, Austin American Statesman data are from Fall 2004, while the Palm Beach Post s data interviews took place in Spring of Gallup s local market newspaper audience and demographic data are audited and accredited by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) for use in the ABC Reader Profile. Newspaper Web site usage data are supplied by Nielsen//NetRatings, a leading provider of Web audience usage data, based on their MegaView Local syndicated service. Data are collected by tracking usage of 345,000 Internet users drawn from a combination of home, work and school. Data for this report are based on Web usage during the month of July NAA is a nonprofit organization representing the $59 billion newspaper industry and more than 2,000 newspapers in the U.S. and Canada. NAA members include daily newspapers, as well as non-dailies and other publications published throughout the world. Headquartered just outside Washington in Vienna, Va., the Association focuses on six key strategic priorities that affect the newspaper industry collectively: marketing, public policy, diversity, industry development, newspaper operations and readership. 5 Why Newspapers Powerful technological advancements and shifting consumer behavior are driving major transformations in the media marketplace. All traditional media have been forced to re-examine and re-invent their value proposition for consumers and advertisers. The newspaper industry has been at the forefront of that re-invention, creating compelling new products across media platforms, targeting specific market segments with more relevant content, and aggressively responding to changing advertiser needs. And their strategies are paying off. Consider that: 77 percent of adults (18+) in the top 50 markets read newspapers over the course of a week totaling more than 115 million readers. On any given Sunday, 60 percent, or nearly 90 million adults, read a newspaper. 60 percent of adults who earn $75,000 or more read a newspaper daily, and more than two-thirds do so on Sunday. 68 percent of year-olds (31.5 million) read a newspaper during the week and 21.4 million read a newspaper on Sunday. Newspapers reach more year olds on an average week day (37.4% in the top 50 markets) than an average half-hour of prime time TV (32.3%), early TV news (22%) and an average quarter hour of radio morning drive time (21%). Newspaper readership also increases with education, as nearly 60 percent of college graduates read a daily newspaper and two-thirds of those with post-graduate degrees do so. 43 million users, or nearly one-third of the Internet population, visited newspaper Web sites in July, 2005, compared to 23 million for Yahoo! News and CNN.com. Internet users viewed 1.7 billion pages on newspaper Web sites in July, Newspapers own 11 of the top 25 online news and information Web sites and, locally, they provide the dominant information site in most of the top 75 markets. 44 percent of newspaper Web site users are younger than 34 and 50 percent have household incomes greater than $50,000. The typical newspaper Web site user has an income of $70,000; 84 percent have recently searched for products online and 82 percent recently bought online. A recent newspaper engagement study demonstrates the effectiveness of newspapers as an advertising medium. According to the Millward Brown study, most respondents (42%) rated newspaper advertising as most credible (compared to TV, radio, magazines and the Internet). Respondents also rated newspapers higher than other media as the best environment for making product selections. Newspapers also provide unique opportunities to reach broad or targeted audiences across multiple products in the local market. Using the traditional newspaper, niche and specialty publications, and a variety of Web sites, advertisers can reach more adults in a specific market than they could with any other media. And the portfolio of products allows advertisers to target specific segments geographically, demographically or by interest.
