1 SOCIALIST WORKERS CAMPAIGNER 873 Broadway, New York, N. Y , tel. ( Fred Halstead for President Paul Boutelle for Vice-President September 9> 1968 To All Campaign Directors and YSHB Organizers: During the month of August local campaign committees and the national campaign committee intervened to sell and distribute literature at a number of conferences and rallies. Democratic Party Convention, Aug A very successful intervention was made at the protest activities held during the Democratic Party convention in Chicago. Paul Boutelle addressed a Free Huey Newton rally of about 5,000, sharing the platform with Bobby Seale, Jerry Rubin, a Peace and Freedom speaker, etc. Boutelle also held a press conference and the ABC radio station in Chicago carried a tape recording of his protest against police attacks on demonstrators. Over pieces of campaign literature were distributed, 3,100 Militants were sold, an additional 500 Militants were distributes- to striking transit workers, and 400 "Truth About McCarthy" pamphlets were sold. In addition, a number of people came to our literature table at Roosevelt University, which is in the Chicago loop near where many of the activities were held. M-Day On August 15 rallies were held by supporters of Eugene McCarthy in over 20 cities. Over 500 campaign brochures were distributed in Indianapolis at the M-Day rally. In Atlanta, 800 open letters to McCarthy supporters were distributed, and 42 Militants were sold. Several names were obtained for the mailing list and a number of McCarthy supporters indicated that they would support Halstead and Boutelle if McCarthy failed to obtain the nomination. In Portland, Halstead and Boutelle supporters sold out of all the literature that they brought to the McCarthy rally. This included 57 "Truth About McCarthy" pmaphlets, and 25 current Militants. Many back issues of the Militant were also sold. BRING THE GIs HOME FROM VIETNAM BLACK CONTROL OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY 126

2 In New York 83"Truth About McCarthy"pamphlets and 99 Militants were sold. A couple thousand campaign brochures were also distributed and several campaign supporters were interviewed bynewsmen. In San Francisco the McCarthy rally on August 15th was quite small but on July 27th 5>000 people marched along the same route as the April 27 antiwar march. YSHBers sold 183 "Truth About McCarthy" pamphlets and a total of $110 worth of socialist literature at two literature tables. In Chicago about 70 "Truth About McCarthy" pamphlets were sold. NSA Conference August Two YSHBers from Minneapolis attended the National Student Association Congress in Manhattan, Kansas, and set up a table which they report "received the most interest of all the tables there." They sold $57 worth of socialist literature and campaign materials in the first 4# hours they had the table up. At the end of 4- days they had totally sold out of literature. The total was over $100. Three NSAers endorsed the campaign, 57 signed the mailing list, 5 bought combined Militant-Young Socialist subscriptions, and 11 wanted the candidates or socialist speakers to come to their schools American Federation of Teachers Convention, August Paul Boutelle attended two days of the AFT convention held in Cleveland and addressed a meeting of the New Caucus. Campaign literature was distributed to the delegates. Black Power Conference, August 29-Sept. 1 Paul Boutelle attended the National Black Power conference held in Philadelphia and chaired a workshop on the black nation which primarily discussed the need for an independent black party. "The Case for an Independent Black Party" was submitted as a position paper, and many copies were sold. Afro-Americans for Halstead and Boutelle distributed two to three hundred copies of the"afro-americans for Halstead and Boutelle Newsletter." About $500 worth of literature on socialism and the black struggle was sold at a literature table. Close to 5000 blacks attended the conference. When further reports are sent in on the sales at the Peace and Freedom Party National Convention held in Ann Arbor and other interventions that local campaign committees have made we will send out reports on these. Fraternally, Douglas Jenness Assistant Campaign Director

3 SCHEDULE FOR HALSTEAD-BOUTELLE T.V. DEBATE WITH WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY A couple of months ago Paul Boutelle and Fred Halstead taped a one-hour television debate on William F. Buckley's television show "Firing Line." Buckley is a prominent conservative and was the Conservative Party's candidate for New York major in The show will be appearing in a number of cities across the country on different dates. Each station should be checked for the exact time the show will be presented. Local campaign committees may want to distribute leaflets, or publicize in other ways the date and time of the show in your area. The schedule which will be printed in the Sept. 13 issue of The Militant is as follows: Sept. 15 Sept 0 15 Sept. 18 Sept. 22 Sept. 24 Sept Sept,» 29 Sept,. 30 Oct Oct. 6 Cct. 6 Oct. 20 Oct. 23 Oct. 27 Cct. 31 Nov Nov. 9 Nov. 9 Nov. 15 Nov. 17 ::ov. 22 Nov Nov. 25 Nov. 29 Dec. 3-8 Dec. 10 Dec. 12 Dec Dec San Francisco KQED Hartford, Conn. 4 To All Campaign Directors and YSHB Organizers: Sept. 10, 1968 Enclosed is the third revised tour schedules for Paul Boutelle and Pred Halstead. The changes made since the second revised schedule have already been approved by the locals involved in the change, so this will probably be the final schedule for the candidates. If there are any problems with the schedule, please notify us immediately. Unlike the last tours, we would like the local campaign committees to give their tour quota directly to Paul Boutelle, rather than sending it to the national campaign office. However, the Halstead tour quotas should still be sent in to the national office. Enclosed is a copy of a new leaflet put out by the National Campaign Committee specially for the participants in the 1968 Socialist Scholars Conference held in New Jersey Sept We have enough of these leaflets left over to send to local campaign committees. If you would like some to enclose in fund appeal mailings or for other purposes, please use the order blank below. In a previous mailing the National Campaign Committee stated plans to publish a pamphlet on the Humphrey campaign similar to "The Truth About the McCarthy Campaign." Since then we have decided against publishing such a pamphlet on Humphrey. We feel that rather than exposing Humphrey's record, which many liberals are also doing, it would be better to explain what is wrong with the Democratic Party. The October Young Socialist will be carrying an article along these lines. A new pamphlet "What's Wrong with the Peace and Freedom Campaign: A Socialist View " will be out in a couple of weeks. They will sell for 250. Please use the order blank below to order these also. Socialist Workers Party Campaign Committee 873 Broadway, New York, N.Y Caroline Lund Campaign Secretary Please send me copies of "What's Wrong With the Peace and Freedom Party" at 150 each. Please send me copies of the "'68 Socialist Campaign" leaflet at $1 for Name Address City... State... Enclosed is $ in payment for the above. Zip
