1 BOARD/ADMINISTRATIVE WORK SESSION August 21, 2006 Board President Randy Bauer called the session to order at 5:30 p.m. at the Educational Services Center Board Room, Cedar Rapids. Board members present: Shirley Exline, Randy Bauer, Greg Kelsey, Norm Zahradnik, Sandy Flatgard, Brian Farmer. Absent: Lauri Hughes Administrators present: Jim Rotter, Board Secretary Board President, Randy Bauer verified that meeting notices had been posted Motion by Kelsey, seconded by Exline to enter into closed session at 5:32 pm pursuant to Iowa Code Roll Call Vote: Approved 6-0 The Board re-convened in open session at 6:11 pm. Superintendent Whitehead and Ying Ying Chen, Director of Learning Services joined the meeting. The Board Set the dates of September 25 th from 5:30 9:00 pm and March 26 th, 2007 from 5:00 9:00 pm for their spring and fall retreats. Topics for the Fall meeting include a Board Self Evaluation discussion and exercise, Achievement Level Test levels and discussions with Building Administration. Vicki Hyland, Project Coordinator, updated the Board on the committee work done on the new 7-9 School Building and Auditorium. The Current plans are still being updated and discussed as staff and student input is being considered and implemented where possible. The current schedule has bids on the two projects scheduled for February and March of 2007 with construction to begin in the spring of Completion of the Auditorium is scheduled for the fall of 2008 and the 7-9 building in the spring of Utility work will begin in the next few months for Gas, Water and Sanitary Sewer to serve the new 7-9 Building. Joe Greathouse, High School Teacher, and Seniors; Phil Sexton, J.D. Baca, Andrew Galloway, and Keefer Wheymeyer updated the Board on the plans for the student built house project. The home will be built on Lot 86, Hoover Trail 1 st addition, Cedar Rapids. Plans call for a 3-4 bedroom, 3 stall garage, ranch with approximately 3,000 total finished square feet which includes the main and lower floor. The session was concluded at 7:25 P.M. 2 MINUTES BOARD MEETING COLLEGE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT August 21, 2006 Board Minutes are not official until approved at the next regular scheduled board meeting. The Meeting was called to order by President Bauer at 7:30 p.m. in the Educational Services Center Board Room. Roll call indicated the following members present: Bauer, Exline, Kelsey, Zahradnik, Flatgard, Farmer. Absent: Hughes Others in Attendance: Ying Ying Chen, Director of Learning Services, Tina Gleason, CR Gazette, Margo Grolmus, Connie Preuss, Sue Skala, Tracy Laue, Cheryl Kiburz, Jim Barth, Steve Doser, Sue Lala Jim Rotter, Board Secretary, verified that the meeting notices had been posted as required by law Motion by Flatgard, seconded by Exline to approve the agenda as presented. President Bauer welcomed visitor comments and requests to speak to the board Motion by Zahradnik, seconded by Flatgard to approve minutes of the Regular Board meeting of July 17, 2006, work session of July 17, 2006; to approve the Athletic Summary, the Expenditures to Date Report, the Miscellaneous Revenue Summary for the Month ended June 30, 2006; to approve the following list of bills: # through # Sue Skala, Principal at Prairie Crest, and Tracy Laue, Principal at Prairie Ridge introduced Margo Grolmus, Connie Pruess, Calypso and Taxi. Calypso and Taxi have achieved national certification as service dogs and serve the District as therapy dogs at Prairie Crest and Prairie Ridge. Cheryl Kiburz, Student Services Director, and Jim Barth, Grant Wood AEA Facilitator updated the Board on the current Special Education offerings in the District which includes 51 rosters and Certified Staff with 74 support staff. Also explained was the co-teaching model which is being implemented in the District. This model has special ed. staff team up with the regular classroom instructors to deliver instruction for both regular and special ed. students.

3 Steve Doser, Community Relations Coordinator/Foundation Fundraiser Director updated the Board on his work with the District and Foundation. Sue Lala, Summer School Coordinator shared data with the Board concerning the 2006 Summer School Session which included 916 students and 64 staff members. Also included were 31 practicum students from Mt. Mercy College. Approximately 45% of the classes attended were academic skills courses and 55% were Enrichment/Activity courses. Ying Ying Chen, Director of Student Services updated the Board on student progress in achieving graduation levels on the Achievement Level Tests. Current data indicates that 19 student in the current senior class have not yet met the requirements for graduation. Students will receive additional testing opportunities during the school year. The Board discussed the level of achievement necessary to pass at the graduation level. It was agreed that further discussion would occur at the Fall Board Retreat. Superintendent Whitehead shared a list of Courses offered to Prairie High School Students through a partnership with Kirkwood Community College.
