Central Library to Receive Facelift Fundraiser scheduled to renovate Pasadena Central Library s south facade By EDDIE RIVERA, Editor, Living Section Published: Thursday, September 4, :51 PM The iconic Pasadena Public Library building needs a little help. Pasadena Public Library Foundation Director Peter McAniff is a little more specific. As he told Pasadena Now recently, The library was built in 1927, and you know, we have nice weather, but it s not necessarily forgiving for buildings. It s very hot. It s a lot of sunshine and it s a lot of years. As a city property, there re lots of massive calls on its resources and so by the early 1980s, the Central Library building was in need of repair.

But in 1980, there wasn t a lot of money to repair the Pasadena Public Library building, so a number of private citizens got together and created the Library Foundation, a public-private partnership with the city in which the Foundation raises private money and then uses it towards the maintenance of the Pasadena Central Library. Toward that end, The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library and the Pasadena Public Library Foundation will co-host a cocktail party on September 14, in Central Library s Great Hall, 285 E. Walnut Street, to raise funds to restore the eye-catching face of the building, which has taken most of the heat, if you will, over the years. That s the part that is most weathered, said McAniff. The renovation will cost about $150,000. According to McAniff, private funds will raise a net base of about $75,000, and the city will contribute the other $75,000. For McAniff, the library is a huge part of his life. I grew up in Pasadena and I got a library card when I was 6 or 7 at the Central Library, which is really where I grew up, and my love for learning has been greatly facilitated by the Pasadena Public Library system. And so now is the opportunity to get back to this institution that has shaped me, he said. Ninety years ago, ten architectural firms competed for the privilege of designing the library and the commission was awarded to the firm of Myron Hunt and H.C. Chambers. Construction began in 1925, the date inscribed over the front entrance. Dedicated two years later, the library now ranks on the National Register of Historic Places. The last restoration took place between 1984 and 1990, funded in large measure by the Pasadena Public Library Foundation.

The fundraising gala will also highlight the year-long celebration of 130 Years of Reading in Pasadena. The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library, founded in 1975, funds the library s programs, special services and cultural events. Pasadena Public Library Foundation, now an endowment fund of the Pasadena Community Foundation, was established 31 years ago to refurbish and maintain the beautiful and historic Central Library building. The Pasadena Public Library Foundation has funded a number of library projects over the years, including the creation of an Internet Commons and purchase of 60 computers at Central Library for patrons to use as research tools and the installation of a new elevator, in conjunction with the Pasadena Community Foundation and the City of Pasadena. Each institution contributed $50,000, so the city was able to install a library elevator immediately providing access to all, said McAniff. As McAniff puts it succinctly, The goal of the library as an institution of accessible learning doesn t change. The library, Pasadena Library Foundation, and The Friends of the Library work very hard to ensure that the historical goal of the library as a place of learning and opportunity for all is maintained for current and future generations. The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library and the Pasadena Public Library Foundation will co-host a cocktail party September 14, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Pasadena Central Library s Great Hall, 285 E. Walnut Street, Tickets for the event are $130 each and available for purchase through the Pasadena Community Foundation website;

Expanding the Library s Walls Friends of the Pasadena Public Library helps books reach out From STAFF REPORTS Published : Friday, September 5, :38 PM It takes more than a library to make a library truly work. Besides the staff and employees there are a host of local organizations that help the library transcend its role in the community. Enter The Pasadena Friends of the Library.

As President Joan Cathcart explained, the group works with the library in a host of ways to help expand its reach throughout the city. We have an organization with 18 directors. That s everybody working, said Cathcart, explaining the wide range of activities that the organization performs to raise money in support of the library s efforts. the Central Library, Cathcart explained. The largest amount of money comes from our book sales, as patrons donate books to the Pasadena Central Library and then we turn around and sell them in a bookstore that is open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday off the Eastern Patio at The group also holds a monthly book sale at the library on the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to noon. It takes a lot of work, said Cathcart, We have a storage area in the basement of the library so we take the books in and out of there, and sort them weekly. And all our directors help with that. Then we turn around and give some money that we raise back to the library, Cathcart continued. Through , the group has pledged $69,500. The group publishes a quarterly newsletter called The Library Insider. The newsletter features some information about the group s activities, as well as articles about the

books that are being read by various members of the community, like Mayor Bill Bogaard, for example. Certainly there are more than enough programs which put to good use the money raised by the Friends. There is $25,000 to the Summer Reading Program, Cathcart detailed, and $10,000 to the teen program, and then this year we re giving money towards creating a new presentation space on the 4th level of the library. We re giving $6,000 for supplies, and then we re giving $4,500 to the One City One Story program, $1,000 to ArtNight that happens once a year, and $5,000 to the Adult Speakers Program. The Library is also celebrating 130 Years of Reading and we are giving $3,000 for that, Cathcart added. And we will also give $5,000 to support the Peek-a-book program located at every library site. Finally, the group has recently partnered with the Pasadena Public Library Foundation. Our mission is basically programming and services, while the library foundation s mission is to help with the infrastructure and technology needs of the Central Library, Cathcart explained. Both groups will be working together on the upcoming Library Day event. Pasadena Public Library. (626) Friends of the Pasadena Public Library:

Cocktail Fundraiser Set for Facade Restoration of Pasadena Central Library From STAFF REPORTS Published: Thursday, August 21, :28 AM To raise funds for the restoration of the Central Library s façade, the Pasadena Public Library Foundation and the Friends of the Pasadena Public Library will host a cocktail party in the library s Great Hall on Sunday, September 14, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Organizers said the proceeds will be used to restore the eye-catching face of the building that overlooks Walnut Street and the historic civic center and to restore the façade to its former glory. Officials said the restoration is needed because the last restoration of the façade took place between 1984 and 1990, funded in large measure by the Pasadena Public Library Foundation. Now the magnificent arched windows, stonework and exterior wall of the south façade are in critical need of restoration, repair and painting due to decades of sun exposure and general weathering, officials said. Myron Hunt and H.C. Chambers designed the building 90 years ago, and began their construction in The library now ranks on the National Register of Historic Places. The fundraising gala will highlight the year-long celebration of 130 Years of Reading in Pasadena. The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library, founded in 1975, funds the library s programs, special services and cultural events. Meanwhile, the Pasadena Public Library Foundation, now an endowment fund of the Pasadena Community Foundation, was established 31 years ago to refurbish and maintain the beautiful and historic Central Library building. Tickets for the event are $130 each and available for purchase through the Pasadena Community Foundation website Tickets and donations benefiting the organization are tax-deductible. The Pasadena Central Library is located at 285 E. Walnut St. For more information, contact Catherine Hany at (626) or chany@cityofpasadena.net.
