6 *MINUTES* CITY OF PASADENA HUMAN SERVICES COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING APRIL 10, :00 P.M. JACKIE ROBINSON COMMUNITY CENTER 1020 NORTH FAIR OAKS AVENUE PASADENA, CA COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chair Priscilla Hernandez, Vice Chair Kristen Tachiki, Charles Nelson, Mireya Asturias Jones, Deborah Raupp, Akila Gibbs COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Robin Allen (excused), Cheryl Hubbard (absent), Angie Mont O Brien, (excused), Peggy Buchanan (excused) Patricia Wright (excused) STAFF PRESENT: Pamela Cantero More, Valerie Carrillo Recording Secretary OTHERS PRESENT: Horace Wormely, Director, Lola Osborne, Deputy Director, Human Services and Recreation Department 1. CALL TO ORDER; WELCOME; ROLL CALL Chair Hernandez called the meeting to order at 2:05 P.M. Staff (Cantero More) called the roll and a quorum was established for the Commission. 2. PUBLIC COMMENT See public comment under 5. New Business 3. REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES, MARCH 13, 2018 After review, it was moved (Jones) and seconded (Gibbs) to approve the Minutes of the March 13, 2018 meeting. (Motion unanimously carried) (Absent: Allen, Hubbard, Mont O Brien, Buchanan, Wright) (Abstain: Raupp) 4. NEW BUSINESS INFORMATION ITEM ONLY JOIN THE CONVERSATION, PRESENTATION BY JULIE GUTIERREZ ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER Brenda Harvey-Williams, Special Assistant to the City Manager presented on behalf of Julie Gutierrez and provided a power point presentation of Join the Conversation Campaign is to engage the community in setting priorities for the City s 2019 budget planning and reviewed the survey, (which can be accessed online) asking the community to share and identify priorities such as: Emergency services Health services Classroom programs

7 Street repairs Youth after school/summer programs Homelessness Commissioner Gibbs mentioned posting the survey on the Senior Center s website. DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES AND DEMETIA FRIENDLY FRIENDS PRESENTATION BY DR. NAVARRO Dr. Navarro, Alzheimer s Greater Los Angeles provided a presentation on three Dementia Friendly initiatives and disseminated information. Discussion followed. ACTION APPOINTMENT OF NOMINATING COMMITTEE FOR OFFICERS Chair Hernandez appointed Commissioner Wright, Commissioner Gibbs and herself to the nomination committee. Staff (Cantero More) provided a description of duties of the Chair, Vice Chair and Parliamentarian. 5. OLD BUSINESS INFORMATION ITEMS ONLY Age Dementia and Accessibility Friendly discussion Commissioner Gibbs provided an update and recommended to incorporate Dementia Friendly into Global Age Friendly. Chair Hernandez appointed Commissioner Jones, Commissioner Gibbs, and Commissioner Tichiki to the Dementia Friendly Ad Hoc Committee. Public Comment: Dr. Navarro suggested that the Commission find out what the Mayor s decision was on Purposeful Aging. Horace Wormely will follow up with the Mayor s office and Commissioner Gibbs will follow up with him. Chair Hernandez requested that the Ad hoc committee review the Age Friendly information and checklist and report back with suggested next steps. 6. REPORTS, COMMENTS, UPDATES INFORMATION ITEMS ONLY (unless otherwise noted) A. Report from Chair Chair Hernandez mentioned that the Commission is on track with the Work Plan and reflected on how all Commissioners are volunteering their time and should always show respect for one another.

8 B. Commissioner Updates/Comments No Updates/Comments C. Ad Hoc Committee Conference on Aging Commissioner Gibbs provided the following update: The Conference on Aging will be held on April 28, 2018 at the First Church of the Nazarene from 8:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M., with keynote speaker Dr. Laura Mosqueda, so far 1000 people have registered. There will be vendor booths available at a cost and there is a table available for the Commission, which will provide information about the Commission and Mission Statement, resource phone numbers, and information on current scams; the following supplies are needed: paper, pens, clipboards and a tablecloth; Commissioner duties were assigned. Commissioner Gibbs suggested that a couple of Commissioners take a survey during the conference asking the question What three things in your community are you facing as an older adult? That would help as a guide during the Commission Annual Meeting. It was established that staff will provide the supplies needed. D. Staff Updates Staff (Cantero More) provided the following update: California LifeLine is based out of San Francisco and do not have a local representative to send to provide a presentation, although staff has gathered information and will the information to the Commissioners. 7. SUGGESTED AGENDA ITEMS FOR FUTURE COMMISSION MEETINGS Report from Dementia Friendly Ad hoc committee Report from Conference on Aging Ad hoc committee A. ADJOURNMENT It was moved (Jones) and seconded (Gibbs) to adjourn the regular meeting. (Motion unanimously carried). The meeting was adjourned at 3:56 P.M.

9 5. Work Plan

10 MISSION (as stated in Charter/Ordinance): The purpose of the Senior Commission is to advise the City Council on the needs, concerns and quality of life for seniors. OBJECTIVES: 1. By July 31, 2017, conduct a Commission Retreat to review Accomplishments for the FY , Member Attendance for the year ended 06/30/17, and draft a Work Plan for FY (July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019). 2. By August 31, 2017, submit to City Council an Annual Report of Accomplishments per the FY Work Plan, a Commission Membership Attendance Report for the year ended 06/30/17, and a Work Plan for FY (July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018). 3. By June 30, 2018, Senior Commission will make recommendation to city council to identify ways to make City of Pasadena more inclusive and accessible to older adults; in particular with those with dementia and disability. 4. By June 30, 2018 the Senior Commission will serve as a resource to older adults in the community through outreach and education. 5. By June 30, 2018, aims to discuss/address the needs of older adults through working groups.
