Sachs ( ); chapterwebmaster@vanarfe.org PRESIDENT S MESSAGE A Fond Farewell to 2018 and a Peek at 2019 As I write this 2018 is ticking down and hope springs for a wonderful Certainly our chapter has many great memories of our chapter meetings and special parties. Very informative speakers came to our meetings and enlightened us on many and varied topics. I was very impressed with the two speakers who are Chapter members Beverly Clemsen and Joanne Thompson, who were both very knowledgeable and entertaining in their presentations. Our two parties this year a very informal Kilroy s On the Deck in June and puttin on the Ritz Holiday Party at the Waterford in December have left us with wonderful memories. I think we will need those memories as we move to meet the challenges of As we all know we are beginning the year with a partial government shut down and that the proposed pay raise for active federal employees has been eliminated for When NARFE President Ken Page 1 of 6

2 Thomas spoke at our Holiday Party he emphasized that there are many challenges ahead and that NARFE would lead the way in protecting our earned benefits. Let us act on Ken s words by contacting our members of Congress to let them know that federal employees are not pawns but patriots dedicated to serving America. Let them know that the earned benefits of active and retired federal employees are not to be compromised. The Legislative Action Center on will provide you the tools to make your voice heard. Joe Bush, President 2018 CHAPTER HOLIDAY PARTY Joe Bush, Jim Little, Deanna Shepherd, Ken Thomas, Kathy Arpa, & Pat Harahan On Wednesday, December 12 the highlight of our Chapter s holiday season took place at the Springfield Waterford. NARFE National President Ken Thomas was our honored guest who provided remarks and swore in our 2019 Chapter Officers. 3 Eleanor Erickson & Beth Lynch Joe Bush presents an award to Margaret Yowell The party featured a sumptuous buffet along with both a cash and dessert bar. The Sforza String Group with Joe Gabalski on piano performed many holiday standards. Two baskets one donated by Pat and Ann Harahan and one donated by the Holiday Party Committee were raffled off for Alzheimer s Research. Margaret Yowell and Beth Lynch happily sold the raffle tickets for the great cause of helping to beat Alzheimer s. Citation Certificates for outstanding service were presented to Margaret Yowell and Nancy Summers. A gift card of thanks was presented to Eleanor Erickson for her many years of service. And an appreciation cup was presented to Past President Harahan for his many years of service to our chapter. Joe Bush presents an award to Nancy Summers Nancy, Jim Wagner, Earl Levy share a moment The Chapter wishes to thank Beverly Clemsen (co-chair), Beth Lynch (co-chair), Nancy Summers, Terri Cameron, Barbara MacDonald, Linda Travis and Joanne Thompson of the Holiday Party Committee all of whom wore many hats to insure the party s success. First they planned everything down to the smallest detail. They then took on active roles during the party, working as greeters, managing the registration table, creating programs for the attendees, providing decorations for the room, and purchasing the beautiful poinsettias that were placed at each table and then given away at the end of the party. 4 2019 NARFE CHAPTER 893 OFFICERS/BOARD MEMBERS ELECTED & 2018 OFFICERS/DIRECTORS DEPARTING Elections were held during the November 2018 Chapter Meeting with the following results: John Olsen, Treasurer; Beverly Clemsen, Secretary. Jim Wagner will be Assistant Treasurer. The following were elected as Directors: Michael Moore, Marcy Stennes, Terri Cameron, Beth Lynch, Naomi Fauntleroy and Margaret Yowell. Jesse Hill will continue in his role as Director. The positions of President and Vice President are currently vacant. The position of President is critical for the chapter. The Board is exploring options to resolve this matter Officers/Board Members departing include Joseph Bush President, Pat Harahan Alzheimer s Chair, and Virginia Carter Director. We thank them for their service and wish them well as they move on to other pursuits VIRGINIA FEDERATION OF NARFE CONFERENCE The 2019 Virginia Federation Conference of NARFE is scheduled for April 7-10, 2019 at the Doubletree by Hilton in Charlottesville, VA. Hotel cost is $99 + tax. Conference registration is $35; with banquet it is $60. Please visit for registration and further details. LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS/NARFE EVENTS LEGcon19 NARFE s Legislative Training Conference LEGcon19 will be held March 10-13, 2019 at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center, 5000 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA Doing the conference attendees will learn more about NARFE s Legislative Agenda, improve advocacy skills, and meet with members of Congress. NARFE member cost for the conference is $225 for registrations thru March 9. How to Maximize Your Benefits January 10, 2019 Future 2019 webinars will be posted on the NARFE website as they are scheduled. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE Between October 16, 2018 and December 31, 2018 Edward Badin, Jack Hill, Leah Rusch, Ethel Schneider, and Judith White transferred into our chapter. During this same period Anita Abbruscato and Thomas Sheehan were reinstated. Welcome to our seven members. During this period we had no new members and no members passed away. Page 4 of 6

THE LITTLE THEATER OF ALEXANDRIA (LTA) The first production of the 2019 season will be "The Fantasticks" on 10 January at 8 PM. This is a funny and sentimental musical that involves a boy, a girl and their meddlesome fathers who nudge them toward marriage by pretending to keep them apart. "You Can't Take It with You" is scheduled for 21 February at 8 PM. This is a comedy about Alice, a seemingly normal girl in a family of erratic, whacky characters, and Tony, Alice's boyfriend and soon to be husband who comes from a very prim and proper family. Hilarious events are sure to happen when these two families meet. Off-beat, quirky, and downright hilarious, this Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy has stood the test of time. The next play of the 2019 season is The Savannah Disputation" scheduled for 25 April 2019, at 8 PM. Here two elderly sisters forget all about southern charm when a young door-to-door evangelist comes knocking. This theological comedy blends sharpness of wit and depth of character, while telling a story in which a crisis of faith arises when seemingly similar beliefs are discovered to be worlds apart. On6 June, 8 PM, LTA presents "A Fox on the Fairway". A madcap adventure about love, life, and man's eternal love affair with...golf. Golf! Love it or hate it, you will enjoy this fast paced comedy that recalls the best of the Marx Brothers' classics. This will be a presentation featuring Jim s photos and impressions of an area of the world most of us only dream about exploring. In February we plan to have as guest a local realtor who will discuss downsizing.
