3 CALIFORNIA WATER ENVIRONMENT ASSOCIATION Annual Banquet The Annual Banquet was held at the Rolling Hills Casino in Corning on January 28, This also happened to coincide with Chinese New Years and a few Chinese Dragons joined our party. There was a great turn out with almost 90 people in attendance this year. We especially want to thank the comedyduo of CWEA 2003 past-president Larry Tolby and 1989 past-president Fran Forkas. Their introduction to the evening was priceless. Many of our local vendors and engineering firms donated door prizes to make the end of the evening as exciting as the beginning. Prizes were donated by CH2M Hill, Rockwell Solutions, Pace Engineering, Carollo Engineering, and CWEA s Northern Sacramento Valley Section. Thank you! 8 CALIFORNIA WATER ENVIRONMENT ASSOCIATION March Training Meeting in Redding The Northern Sacramento Valley Section had an opportunity to host a one-day specialty workshop for CWEA in March instead of having a traditional local section training day. The O& M Specialty Workshop on March 15, 2017 was attended by 20 CWEA members. We had members representing Davis, Sacramento, East Bay MUD, Redding, Yuba City, Healdsburg, Glenn County, Severen Trent Services, Placerville, and Pinnacle ART in attendance. The goal of this training was to shift the typical operations and maintenance schedules to Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM). RCM prioritizes operations and maintenance based on the risk of failures (pump failures, valve failures, etc.) and the consequences of such failures (overflows, permit violations, plant shut downs, etc.). Financial savings can be achieved by prioritizing operations and maintenance based risk and consequences instead of solely on the manufactures recommended maintenance schedules. One of the speaker s wastewater treatment plant realized a 25% cost reduction in Operations and Maintenance by fully implementing RCM. Who wouldn t want to reduce their costs by 1/4?? RCM has not caught on in many agencies because it requires a lot of work, decision making, and input from operators and maintenance staff to achieve. Some agencies have hired consultants to assist them with the conversion from their existing operations and maintenance work order system to a system based on RCM. Our presenters, Ralph Stevens from City of Carmel and Gerald Fejarang from Pinnacle Advanced Reliability Technologies did a good job introducing the group to a new way of thinking about plant maintenance. 8
