2 Course/Module description: The course introduces key processes that shaped Spanish history for the last three hundred years. Among them: Spain's reception of the Enlightenment and the Enlightened Absolutism that characterized the new Bourbon dynasty in the 18th century and the debacle produced by Napoleon's invasion to the Peninsula in 1808 that speeded up the wars of independence both at home and in the colonies. We will also focus on the characteristics of the liberal project in Spain and the reaction of both traditional and conservative factions as they competed to define the emerging nation state. Thus we will further trace the political, social, economic and cultural developments that characterized Spain towards The second part of the course traces the political crisis between the two world wars, the rise of the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, and the factors that gave rise to the Spanish Second Republic : a daring attempt to fight off the wave of fascism that was threatening European stability. The outbreak of the civil war and the rise to power of General Francisco Franco will for ever change the destiny of Spain. Course/Module aims: acquire basic tools and knowledge to approach social, cultural and political processes that chacaterized Spanish modernity from the rise of the Bourbon Dinasty till the establishment of the Francoist dictatorship Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: *identify and characterize Spanish Enlightenment and the rise of the novel Bourbon's Enlightened Absolutism; *identify the factors leading to Spain s postponed modernity *understand Spain's process of nation building in the XIXth Century Identify the factors leading to the II Spanish Republic, the Civil War and the rise of Dictatorship Attendance requirements(%): 100 page 2 / 5
