1 Modern World Civilizations History 141 section 2384 (Spring 2013) Tuesday and Thursday 2:00-3:25 PM SOCS CE/AD Present Instructor: Edgar Pacas Contact information: Office Art Bldg 320 Contact Instructor for office period meeting(s) Course Syllabus: History 141 (formerly History 4) History of Modern Civilizations 3 units; 3 hours lecture Recommended Preparation: eligibility for English 1A Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC This course is a survey of the political, economic, social, and cultural development of world civilizations from the rise of the West in the mid-fifteenth century to the present day. Topics include the European voyages of exploration and expansion, Africa and the transatlantic slave trade, Protestant and Catholic Reformations, the Islamic empires, China and Japan in the age of global expansion, French and industrial revolutions, World War I and II, the Cold War, and globalization. Note: History 140 is not a prerequisite. Course objectives: 1. Analyze the reasons for the European explorations and methods of expansion in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. 2. Compare and contrast the Iberian conquest, colonization, and exploitation of Latin America with that of the English, French, and Dutch experience in North America. 3. Explain the origins and expansion of the transatlantic slave trade and assess its impact on the political, economic, demographic, and social development of Africa. 4. Evaluate the impact of the Protestant Reformation and scientific revolution on the religious, political, and intellectual development of Europe. 5. Analyze the development of absolutism in continental Europe and constitutional monarchy in Great Britain. 6. Discuss the political, economic, social, and cultural development of China under the Ming and Qing dynasties and evaluate the impact of early interaction with European traders and missionaries. 7. Analyze the impact of European traders and missionaries on the political development of Japan and the transformation of Japan under the Tokugawa Shogunate. 8. Compare and contrast the political, economic, social, and cultural development of the Islamic empires of the early modern era as well as their relations with the European states. 9. Discuss the long and short term causes of the French Revolution and assess its role in the political, social, and cultural development of Europe. 10. Analyze the impact of the French Revolution on the 1

2 political and economic development of the colonial Americas. 11. Explain the origins, development, and expansion of the industrial revolution and analyze its political, economic, and social consequences. 12. Compare and contrast the political, economic, and social development of the United States, Canada, and Latin American in the nineteenth century. 13. Analyze the factors that contributed to the decline of the Ottoman empire, Russian empire, China, and Japan in the nineteenth century and explain the reasons for the differing responses of China and Japan to European incursions. 14. Evaluate the motives for New Imperialism, assess its impact on Africa and Asia, and discuss the anti-colonial movements that emerged in response. 15. Analyze the factors that contributed to the outbreak of World War I and the reasons for the failure of the peace settlements. 16. Analyze the causes of the Russian revolution and examine the establishment of communism in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. 17. Discuss the factors that contributed to the rise of totalitarian regimes in the interwar period. 18. Explain the Asian and European origins of World War II as well as the course of the war and its peace settlements. 19. Compare and contrast the Russian and Chinese communist revolutions and the evolution of communism in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the People s Republic of China. 20. Trace the origin and course of the Cold War and analyze the reasons for the collapse of communist regimes in Eastern and Central Europe and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. 21. Explain the process of post-world War II decolonization and evaluate the colonial legacy of the newly independent states of Asia and Africa. 22. Discuss the regional and global integration of national economies and the social, cultural, and environmental impact of globalization. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of History of Modern Civilizations, students will be able to develop and persuasively argue a historical thesis in a written assignment that identifies and explains major social, economic, political and/or cultural historical themes or patterns in the history of Modern Civilizations and apply appropriate historical methods to analyze and use primary and/or secondary sources as evidence to support the thesis. Class attendance/participation: Because of the time constraint we will have to cover plenty of material each week so class attendance and participation are extremely important and count a total of 25 points towards your final grade. If there is an emergency that will force you to miss a class please call or with enough time to let me know that you will be absent. Attendance during semester (El Camino College policy pg. 11 in college catalog) Students are expected to attend their classes regularly. Students 2

3 who miss the first class meeting or who are not in regular attendance during the add period for the class may be dropped by the instructor. Students whose absences from a class exceed 10% of the scheduled class meeting time may be dropped by the instructor. However, students are responsible for dropping a class within the deadlines published in the class schedule. Students who stop attending but do not drop may still be retained on the course roster and receive a failing grade. Students may view their registration status using the college s website. II Since ISBN Assignments, tests, due dates, and grades: Please refer to for information concerning class syllabus, assignments, weekly readings, updates, due dates and all other pertinent information for the course. ALL ASSIGNMENTS NEED TO BE TYPED, DOUBLE SPACED, 12 FONT, PREFERABLY TIMES NEW ROMAN. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS-15 MINUTES PASSED THE HOUR THE ASSIGNMENT IS LATE AND WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. PLEASE DO NOT ANY ASSIGNMENTS THEY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. 5 Analytical Questions: For this assignment you are responsible for drafting five (5) analytical questions. You do not need to answer the questions. However, you do need to make sure that your questions are analytical (try asking a how or why type of question). Make sure that the question is historically factual, that it could be answered in a 6-8 page analytical paper. Be specific in your question-try not to ask a broad question. This assignment is worth 25 points. Due on February 21, Analytical question and short 2 to 3 paragraph response For this assignment you are responsible for drafting one (1) analytical question (it can not be one of the ones that you asked for your previous assignment) and providing a short two (2) to three (3) paragraph response. This assignment is worth 50 points. Due on February 28, 2013 Turabian Style 2 Quotes, 2 Footnotes, and Bibliography Assignment: You will be responsible for choosing two sentences (no more than two lines of script long) enclose them in quotations marks and provide a footnote citation for them using the 3

4 Turabian format. You will also be responsible for providing a bibliography for all your textbooks using the Turabian format. Please visit the class website at and use the link for the tutorial on Turabian format for assistance concerning this assignment. This assignment is worth 50 points. Due on March 5, 2013 Primary Source Analysis Assignments: You will be responsible for using the Modern History Sourcebook or the Medieval History Sourcebook plus the other links on these websites for other global regions website links: Modern- Medieval- * feel free to use any of the other links provided on these sites so long as they keep with the relevant time frame of the class 1500 CE to the Modern period. and choosing a primary source document. You will draft a one page analysis of the document using the following guidelines. 1. At the top of page you will provide a bibliographical entry for the primary source using the Turabian format. 2. Give a brief synopsis of what the source is about. 3. Analyze the importance/relevance of the source to history and our course. 4. Analyze how it influences the (re)interpretation of the historical narrative. These assignments are worth 25 points each. Due Dates: 3/19/2013, 4/2/2013, 4/16/2013, and 4/30/2013 Outline for Essay (Assignment): Important-this assignment must be completed using Power Point. The following guidelines must be followed in order to get the full credit. In four pages (four slides per page) you will be responsible for drafting 14 slides total. Slide 1- you must draft an analytical question based on readings or lectures. Slide 2- a brief response to the question Slide 3- using the first two slides, draft a thesis statement that will let your reader know what you are intending to argue or analyze and how you will support. Slide 4- Point of support #1 Slide 5-subsection 1 for point of support #1 Slide 6- subsection 2 for point of support #1 Slide 7- Point of support #2 Slide 8- subsection 1 for point of support #2 Slide 9- subsection 2 for point of support #2 Slide 10- Point of support #3 Slide 11- subsection 1 for point of support #3 Slide 12-subsection 2 for point of support #3 Slide 13- Conclusion- idea of thesis/argument restated (feel free to elaborate your argument in this section. 4

5 Slide 14- A Turabian format bibliography with a minimum of 2 primary sources and 3 secondary sources used to formulate your analysis. This assignment is worth 100 points and must be attached to your 6-8 page analytical essay when that essay is due. (The outline does not count towards the 6-8 pages of analytical essay). Due date for outline: May 7, 2013 Analytical Essay (Assignment): You will be responsible for drafting a 6-8 page analytical essay based on your previous outline assignment (which you must attach with this essay when turning essay assignment in). Make sure that you are analytical in your argument and that you provide solid support for your arguments. Your essay should include a minimum of two quotes from any primary or secondary source that supports your argument with an accompanying footnote citation (must be at bottom of page where quote is found) using the Turabian format. You also need to include a bibliography of all the sources you used to formulate your analysis for this essay (in Turabian format). A minimum of 2 primary sources and 3 secondary sources should be included in your bibliography. These guidelines must be followed precisely in order to get full credit for this assignment. Essay assignment is worth 200 points. Due date: May 30, 2013 Midterm: 100 points on April 18, 2013 Final: 150 points on June 6, 2013 Both midterm and final are multiple choice and true or false questions so please bring a # 2 pencil and a scantron form 882-E. Tests are not open book or notes. The class grade is based on a point system = A = B = C = D = F **All assignments are due at the beginning of class and are considered late 15 minutes after class begins. No late papers will be accepted unless you and I have come to some previous agreement. I will not accept papers that are ed.
