2 Aviad Levy Yaara Elazari Omer Alon Naama Peled Chen Peretz Morr Link Course/Module description: The course offers students a general background to the history of international relations from the end of the nineteenth century to the present. The course emphasizes the relationship between the great powers while taking into account regional developments and the emergence of other actors in the international system. Topics issues discussed include: the background to the two world wars and the course and outcome of the wars; the development of the Cold War; colonization and decolonization; the emergence of the European Union, the end of the Cold War and the post-war world. Besides describing events, considerable emphasis is placed on understanding the processes and their underlying factors. Course/Module aims: The course aims to introduce students to the long-term developments and principal events in the international arena between the close of the nineteenth century to the end of the Cold War. It equips students to identify the military, economic, cultural and human factors which especially influence the international system during this period. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: Students should be familiar with the main personalities and events which were responsible for shaping international politics during the twentieth century. Students will acquire the essential empirical background for their studies in the international relations department. The Bismarck system, The new imperialism: Its causes, characteristics, and international implications. 6. The circumstances and causes of the outbreak of the First World War. 7. World War I: Outbreak of war to "slaughterhouse" of Verdun and the Somme. 8. World War I: The entry of the US into the war, the Russian Revolution, and the German surrender. 9. The peace agreements after the war and their implications. 10. The Twenties: The road to Locarno and the Leage of Nations. 11. The totalitarian era: Italian fascism, Japanese militarism, and German Nazism 12. Nazi foreign policy in the 1930s: From moderate revisionism to open aggression, Part I. 13. Nazi foreign policy in the 1930 ': From moderate revisionism to open aggression, Part II. Semester B: After First phase of World War II. 2. The second phase of World War II. Conferences at the end of the war, towards a new international order. 3. Roots of the Cold War, Sovietization of Eastern Europe. 4. The rise of Communist China and the Korean War - the institutionalization of the Cold War. 5. New Spirit: Soviet relations with the Western powers, the Communist bloc, and the third world after the death of Stalin. 6. Growing tensions: The Sino-Soviet conflict, the Berlin crisis and the Cuban missile crisis. (Film) 7. The Vietnam War. 8. The United States and the European powers. The rise and fall of detente. Change in relations between the USA and China. 9. The Second Cold War and the rise of radical Islam. 10. The change in relations between the superpowers in the late eighties, the end of the Cold War, the collapse of the Soviet Union. 11. De-colonization and the Third World in the international arena. 12. Latin America in the international arena. 13. Trends in consolidation and division in Europe during the Cold War and beyond. 14.
