Only once this work was done was it possible to start cultivating the land and living off the harvest. He worked the land with a plough, planted in the spring and harvested at the end of the month of August. He raised oxen or cows as well as pigs. He also raised turkeys and hens. They could make decisions in terms of administering the colony and ensuring its development and security, but key political, economic and military decisions were made in France. (a conflict and a treaty between the French and the British) The British did not trust the Acadian population and wanted to offer fertile lands to the colonists settling in Nova Scotia.
