7 Colonial Place/Riverview Civic League February 8th, 2016 Meeting Acting President John Robertson called the meeting to order at 6:35 pm. Page 7 Acting President John Robertson introduced Officer Carrie Ford (Maglalang) who reported that there had been thefts from autos in the neighborhood during the last month. In most cases there was something of value visible in the car, the thief would bust a window to get to it. She advised people with smart keys (push button ignition) should store them in a metal container when in the house to deter the use of devices which can boost the key s signal enough to gain access to the car. Officer Ford also reported that the Police had arrested a couple of people accused of breaking into cars in an adjoining neighborhood. Steve Brown asked about circulating a petition to have the speed limit on Virginia Avenue reduced to 15 MPH. Office Ford advised him that he would need to talk to the City s Traffic Engineer. Officer Ford introduced Lt. Gibbs, her new supervisor. He encouraged everyone to get to know their neighbors and to look out for one another. Committee Reports: Pete Stoll, Treasurer, gave the Treasurer s report for the month of January, stating that the Civic League checking account had a beginning balance of $10,301.10, showed revenue of $310.09, expenses of $ and had an ending balance of $10, The CD balance is $5, Pete responded to questions regarding the Civic League expenses, and specifically the newsletter expenses. Questions were raised regarding the timing of the newsletter delivery. Alicia Hinsch noted that she delivered the newsletters, and she usually received them the weekend before the meeting, which did not give people time to plan to attend the meeting. A number of people noted that they often did not receive a newsletter at their home. They were advised to contact Dave Spriggs, the Media Committee chair, and let him know of their concerns. Tobie Serafim, Membership Committee chairperson, advised that it is time for members to renew their Civic League membership. Renewal reminders will be sent out to anyone who has not yet paid their dues. Old Business: Walter Mullen, manager of the Eggleston facility, advised that Celebrity Chef Ponder has leased the Café M location and he plans to operate a reservations only restaurant. Acting President Robertson reported that City Council had passed an ordinance allowing for the placement of our mermaid in the right-of-way of the circle at Delaware and Colonial. Jack Kennedy and John Robertson are working with Lindsey Flaherty to meet the City requirements for placement of Lady Anne. Acting President Robertson reported that Landmark Development Company was selected to work on the former Stewart School. City Council passed an ordinance changing the zoning to allow for the development of a multi-family residential facility. He explained that the Landmark proposal involved converting the school building into apartments for senior citizens. New Business: Pete Stoll reported that the Mayoral candidates will be at our March meeting. He has received firm commitments from Sheriff McCabe and Councilman Protogyrou and a possible commitment from Sen. Alexander (depends on the General Assembly session). It was suggested that the April meeting feature the School Board candidates and the City Council candidates. It was reported by Acting President Robertson that a new restaurant will be coming to the O Sullivan s site. Geoff Fout, who currently operates Keagan s restaurant, plans to open Mack s Barge. He is planning major renovations and expansion to the facility. The Planning Commission recommended approval of Mr. Fout s Special Exception Permit over the objections of the Highland Park Civic League. Acting President Robertson spoke with Mr. Fout at great length about the concerns raised by the Highland Park Civic League and by extension the CPRV Civic League, and feels Mr. Fout wants to be a good neighbor, is willing to make concessions on the designs of the exterior changes, and hopes to be a positive addition to the Colley Avenue corridor. Acting President Robertson announced that ecofest 2016 will be held again this year along the Lafayette River on Mayflower Drive on May 7 th from 11am to 5pm. There being no further business, the Meeting was adjourned at 7:45.
